@Bill Sbac and if the techs don't point out things that 'need' work on a newer car, they are given a crappy car to check out. The work doesn't get done on the old car and they get paid a minimum for checkout. Many parts are called bad at 1/3 worn, and many others are while we are doing this repair we recommend..........

I believe it. Took my corolla in to mine for a tire rotation. I marked the tires before going in. Went in at the appointed hour to pick it up, paid, and went out to the car to find the wheels hadn't been touched. It was a delight to go back & inform the manager I had marked the tires, he had been tested, and failed colossally.

@@Treyk901 Agree about Discount Tire. They've kept me happy for a couple of decades -- good people. I bought a used car a couple of years ago that picked up a big screw in the left rear after I'd had it a few weeks. Took it to Discount for repair (it wasn't even their tire) expecting to pay a few bucks, but they fixed it for free and did it in about 15 minutes. That tire's been just fine ever since. Next time I need to replace tires I know exactly where I'll be going.

This just happened to me today at “Right Toyota” in Scottsdale, Arizona! Charged me $110.53 for a routine oil change, tire check and rotation. I marked the back tires as my dad taught me years ago! They did NOTHING- not the oil change or check the spare tire pressure either! Found a nail in the rear tire as well! I called them out and made them refund the money AND do all of it while me and the top manager stood there and watched. 😡

@@Stretch501st. This is actually true I bought a 2008 Toyota Corolla from my local dealership in Temecula California and I was amazed at how well of a job the dealership did in making sure all the fluids were clean mechanically it was in great condition a few minor nicks but paint was original and look great for an old car the engine bay was clean but not of that oily stuff that used car dealerships used to deceive buyers and zero leaks it was worth the 75 hundred dollars I paid for it, but just a week ago I went to another Toyota dealership in Santa margarita California and as soon as I pulled the transmission fluid dipstick to check the condition of the transmission fluid, the fluid was already black I told the salesman I don't think the previous owner took the care to service the transmission and I walked away. So one dealership good the other bad, but you still have a better chance of getting a good car at a major dealership than some of those used car dealerships, I'm speaking from experience.

Dealerships do that all the time because they NEED to keep the service department cash flow coming in in order to cover the salaries of the shop employees. If no repairs are getting billed, the service department makes NO money. Also, the service “writers” earn their money based on how much repairs they bill. So, they are forced to invent imaginary “repairs needed”.

Went to a Toyota dealer to get my rear alignment bars replaced because they became seized. They wanted $900+ to just replace it (I already had the parts).
Went to another Toyota dealer that’s privately owned. They charged $300+ with alignment for the job.
Proves some places just want to overcharge and rip you off.

IMO, they may have been that way in the old days. But not anymore. The only thing that matters to them is the ole mighty dollar. The satisfied customer is of no concern to them and their honorable past has faded away into oblivion. At least that has been my recent experience with them not honoring the warranty and reasonable expectations I had with their vehicles. I've had greater success with Ford.

@@rameylewis7730 Clear refusal (in writing) to honor a legitimate warranty claim = call to your Dept. of Consumer Affairs. This is part of the AG's office in our state. A "fact-finding" call from them to a dealer will usually get prompt action.

Being a former employee at both Toyota and Honda, I can honestly say that Scotty is 100% correct with this! As he also mentions, always get a second opinion when it comes to expensive repairs. It depends on which dealership (and any mechanic, actually) you take your vehicle to. The two that I worked at were above board, but there were some others that I would have avoided.
Also have seen the same with independent shops. If it feels shady, trust your gut and get another opinion. Most of all, if and when you do find an honest dealership or mechanic, use them for your repairs as much as possible when you have the need to.

Dealers are always trying to find ways to make money since they have high overhead costs. This is why they will recommend you replace a part that may not need to be replaced. It is better to take your car to an independent mechanic like Scotty

I've been a Toyota tech for 23 years and I've never seen a rear differential go bad on AWD Siennas, Highlanders or Rav4s. However I have seen rear differential couplers go bad, especially on Rav4. If the coupler which is mounted right in front of the rear diff. goes bad, you can't miss it because it makes a heck of a loud noise.

The absolute ONLY chance my car ever goes to a dealer is if it's under warranty or if there's a recall.
Scotty's right about dealership overhead. My local independent orders everything in. And, they're so busy that there's usually a two-day wait, so there's no incentive to scam customers.

Working for a GM dealer parts for years, part of the problem is huge incentives for hitting your sales mark, happened in every department. Make $X, you get $1500. Do that every week and its real good. Coworkers will steal your sales, customers just to get the bonus. The customers are just a way to hit sales marks made so by the dealership.
