- We had the chance to compare the brand new Yamaha MT 09 2021 against the also brand new KTM 890 Duke 2021 in Barcelona. Which is more comfortable? Which one offers the best value for money? Valentin Pokorny flies to Spain to find out what are their pros and cons. If you had the chance, which would you pick?

Yes but only IF way more effort reading with understanding to the delivery....as opposed to simply rattling words rapid fire...which is not pleasurable to listen to IMHO

I would also say that yamaha is much more reliable as a machine and as distributors...
But what should I know as a former duke 690 owner 🤣
KTM has really soured their trustworthiness with much ill treatment of their customers...brutal on warranty claims etc....horsepower and specifications can only go so far in keeping a brand on top....you cant treat customers like crap and expect loyalty in the long run....there are too many other great new motorcycles on the scene...
I like KTM's but I think the MT definitely wins in the engine department. That triple is such a good all around motor and it's tested reliable.

I have owned both bikes long term, 2020 890R 11 month 9000kms & a 2021 MT09 5 months 5000kms, the KTM has my heart in the twisties, the Yamaha for the motors smoothness & reliability. Great fare review on both bikes.

Got my name down for the 990 Duke when ever they come out.
I owned a 2018 mt09, and knowing that the 2021 improved upon its functionality and handling has got to make it one of the best bikes anyone can buy under 10k US dollars.

It would be more fair to compare the KTM 890 Duke to the MT-09 SP version when the price taken in consideration. The Duke is still a bit more expensive than the SP though.
I think this is the new 890 Duke - not the Duke R
so it should be a fair comparison.
@@rosendo3523 Yes, this is the new 890 Duke without Brembo brakes, lower spec suspension and less power (115hp vs 121hp) compared to 890R, so i agree this is a fair comparison.

Thank you for doing this in english 👍. I've ridden the 790 and own FZ09. The yamaha power delivery and smoothness wins hands down. Not trying to offend KTM owners and fans. Just an honest feedback.

People don't buy twins for silky smooth engines. Twins are punchy down low and have enough up top to make spectacular road bikes that can be tracked. They aren't for smoothness they are for down low torque

Great Review and perfect assessment of the 2 machines. Having test rode both , I completely agree with your review.
The KTM 890 felt far superior to ride , and ultimately more enjoyable with the seating position and handling.
MT09 was indeed considerable smoother , almost like riding an electric bike. I prefer the rougher and thumpier engine of the Dukes parallel twin personally , and found the Duke astonishingly smooth past second gear, and felt it had so much more character.
Greatly appreciated your English diction and quality of the footage and knowledge.

Would be nice to see how the new 2021 Ducati Monster 950 stack up against these. The Monster is also very light and with a V2 engine, but a little pricier i guess.

Cool, I love KTM style and the way they ride, however the reliability has let me down in the past with the 690, so I stick with Yamaha

Great review, I would like the option for subtitles in english, as english is not my native language and sometimes it was hard to follow because of the accent.
he understates the mt09 here. the power is fully usable in rain mode for almost any rider but when you put it in standard or A mode it becomes a full on widow maker.

Brand new 890 ended up here twice in the shop for warranty repairs... Surely it's a great bike, but the same bugs stopped me from buying the 790.

Someone else said it, we should compare the SP with the Duke value wise. And given your own words on the way the MT's engine compares to the Duke in terms of smoothness, we should have started the review with that :D
The price difference between 890 and the mt 09 here is 500 euro's.

Fwiw if you put a Corbin seat on the mt09 it completely transforms the the riding position and gives a much sportier feel, albeit at the price of a $600 investment. That said the Corbin seat is better than literally almost any oem seat on any naked (or sport bike).
Should probably compare to the SP model. To me, that would be more like for like.

Haven’t KTM won more Dakar’s than any other manufacturers ? Twice more than Yamaha it would seem. I guess you got to ask yourself the question.. do you want a race - bread machine that will make you squeal like a child from excitement with every twist of the throttle , or a reliable wheelie commuter !

Only the 390cc & below are manufactured in India, everything else comes from Austria.
I have the 23 MT09SP, if there is a better bike out there that is more fun on the road then it must be very good!

i would take a few points out of any company (in this case KTM) just for charging extra for items that should be standard on the bikes i.e. qs. Soon you will be charged extra for the rear break or the seat ..

But for Duke 890 you must spent more than 1000 euro vs MT09......and 890 R cost 2000 euro more than normlan 09 so it is crazy.....
Like the old saying goes , “You get what you pay for “, a little cheeky of KTM to charge a premium to unlock features however!

KTM not an everyday bike ! Please think a bit more about that- I'm sure the vast majority of buyers would want the option of everyday usage and you rate it over the MT09, eh excuse me - would that mean we would need to buy two bikes ? 1K more expensive -that alone should be enough to choose the MT09. Also you kind of gloss over the bad fueling on the KTM- again that alone can be a real turn off and enough reason not to buy.
The KTM just rides like a motorcross bike. It isn't much lighter in kg but it feels about 20kg lighter. The punch of the twin is amazing. If you want the triple that winds out, have a look at the Street Triple
MT-09 for the looks and quality of the engine... its a Japanese at the end of the day .
The one that more reliable….Yamaha. Period.

Would you please define quality? Because as far as I know quality product is that lasts in time.
As I and everyone in the motorcycle world know very well that KTM like Ducati need a frequent visit to your mechanic due to low quality. On the other hand Yamaha like Honda kawasaki will be the same like new for many years to come.

Very difficult to follow along. It is like it is just being read (and too quickly) without the proper cadence and emphasis of someone actually personally able to convey the ideas....how much effort would it take to read it as if you were actually thinking and saying the words? Rather than just monotone spewing the words out without regard for meaning....

I wouldn't touch a KTM they are to unreliable , Yamaha's are reliable with bigger valve check services , the CP3 is a much better engine than the twin KTM unit as well .
No ways the mt09 is way better. Duke has to many issues
KTMs are stupidly unreliable don't waste your money on them.
The guy talks too fast. I can barely understand 80% of what he’s saying, plus the dumb music hinders the effort as well

The KTM headlight for sure. Everyone said the same when this first appeared. Familiarity doesn’t make it any prettier but I guess makes it more acceptable
