      What do you do if you have a lot of dry skin on that skin area under Cuticle? I’m trying to heal it after years of peeling that skin when dry. Been doing oil soaked and constantly putting cuticle oil but it’s creating areas again where looks like I should peel. Should I leave and continue with the oils?

    Hello Anna! It's always a pleasure to learn from you. I have to say since I started following your suggestions about taking off cuticles and not the living skin, and moisturizing everyday, stopping touching, rubbing, biting the skin around the nail, the look of my hands has really improved! They look healthier and tidier, and the living skin is more soft and regular, not messy and "broken" as before. Thank you for sharing with us notions with a scientific foundation, that pay attention also to the health of the nails, and not just obsessively to the aesthetic. Un abbraccio dall'Italia 🎈

    Thank you so much for a detailed explanation of what is going on between the nail plate and the proximal nail fold. After following your tips studiously for the past year or so and seeing so much improvement, I got creative and started cleaning out in between the PNF and the nail plate and I was shocked at how much "stuff" came out. (Not gunna lie, it was pretty satisfying. ) I thought it was all dead cuticle tissue, now I know I was disrupting those stem cells. My proximal nail folds didn't change too much but I could tell the seal between the PNF and the nail plate was broken. I don't think I've done too much damage but I'm not going to be doing that anymore at all, and just really babying my nails again.
    Thank you again for making such detailed content- my nails really have improved so, so much over the past year or so!! ❤

I have been watching many nailcare videos recently and I always get nauseous when it comes to cuticle cleaning because what I've seen so far looked horrifying to me. This video is the first one where I feel that it's perfectly safe and nothing gets damaged what shouldn't.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can relate. People send me videos of very invasive techniques and I can’t even watch them. It makes me nauseous.
      I don’t know why there is so much hate for that poor skin fold around the nails.
      Instead of caring for that skin people literally mutilate it.

    When I was a kid all our clothes were handwashed. That meant spending a ton of time in water, and in that time the cuticle gets really really soft and just sloughs off. It also turns whiter so you can see it better. That's how I learned what the cuticle is and I learned to soak my hands and feet before I could ever get cuticle removers.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The reason why cuticle remover is great is because you don’t have to soak the whole nail. And they are much more effective than just water :). But yes. Before cuticle removers we used just soapy water

  • @ilovemakeup814

    Thank you for the thorough explanation. I bought a cuticle remover from a beauty supply store and I felt it didn't work well for me. But I think I wasn't leaving it on long enough and I wasn't prepping my nails with rubbing alcohol either (I normally wash my hands before working on my nails), so I will try your tips and tricks.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You don’t really have to use the alcohol. For some it’s easier to see what is the skin fold and what is cuticle after the area is clean and wiped with alcohol.

    I watched a video of yours about 6 months ago. For reference I have smaller hands that 9/10 year olds. Every time I would go to get my nails done they would complain my nails were too tiny and would have to shape the 2 smallest tips a LOT to fit my nails. I would love to send you before and after pictures from 6 months ago to today. All of my closest friends and family asked why I started getting fake nails and are floored when I tell them they are my own nails. Where could I send you an email with pics? I really wish you knew exactly how helpful you’ve been. You’ve changed my life actually. I’m now planning on going to nail school to be a nail technician and am no longer embarrassed about my tiny hands. To be honest they don’t even look that small now that my nails are on point. I'm curious about the translucent part of the nail. Is that considered healthy? Is that considered a nail that is fully and properly attached to the nailbed? I'm asking this as for many years I've had a similar situation with my big toes. I have never worn nail polish so that would not be the reason. But particularly after a bath when moisture gets in, you can see the water has penetrated quite deelpy, at 75% of beneath the nail where I believe it should not reach. I can mask this effect temporarily by applying oils or creams in the gap beneath. However, this not solve the issue and I am concerned about the nail not reattaching.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If the Hyponychium is not broken there is nothing wrong with the nail. Nail is porous and builds up moisture or soaks oil and then becomes more translucent sometimes. Also when it’s over filed. Which in my case the nail is not. Clear area doesn’t mean that it supposed to be attached to the nail bed there

      The poison is in the dose. One glass of wine could be ok once a week. 2 bottles of vodka every day, not so much :)
      I haven’t noticed any dryness wiping the nails twice a week with alcohol.

    Hi! I do have hypothyroidism so the skin around my nails and tips of my fingers is extra dry up to the point of cracking. My manicurist used to nip it but I find that it overgrows that way. I like to smooth it with a file. Any reccomendations on creams or oils that could help with that? I feel like all hand creams are not thick enough to actually make any difference 🥺

      @@TheSalonLife what's your top 3 nail polish brands?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      My needs might not be the same as your needs.
      For me it’s Dazzle Dry (5 min fully dry and doesn’t yellow the nails)
      Probably CND Vinylux, good brushes
      Drugstore brand Revlon Ultra Snap (great formulas, fantastic brushes)
      Zoya also has excellent brushes (the wide ones)
      Brushes make a huge difference in how the polish applies.
      Another excellent polish is Cien, a cheap polish from Lidl. Limited colors but great formula and good lasting.

    Is it ok if I just remove my cuticles with a glass nail pusher without using a liquid cuticle remover?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Definitely. I have an example on my channel
      But it’s easy to overdo it because the glass tool is sharp. People very often scrape their nails. They don’t feel where the cuticle ends and their nail starts

    Anna, would you say that using cuticle removal more than once a week could damage the nail? I am usually trying to stick to once a week but lately it looks like I need more 🙈

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cuticle grows with the nail. In 1 week the new growth of the nail nail (with the cuticle on top of it) is 1mm. On my video it was a 2 week growth.
      Why do you feel you “need it” more?
      Is the skin around your nails dry? That is not cuticle. And the remover should not really go on the skin

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      And yes if you do it too much you are going over area that had the cuticle removed already.
      Cuticle does not crawl up the nail. It moves on top of the nail with the nail.

      I would do it after a shower. You need good light, good tools and see what you are doing. I don't think I would be able to remove it in the shower.

    does a cuticle grow when I have a nail polish on? I've been told that it can't grow onto a nail plate because of layer of nail polish, which I wear everytime

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Cuticle moves with the nail. The nail grows with the polish on so the cuticle moves with the nail. So it doesn't "crawl" up the nail onto the nail polish but it will be on the new growth. So the cuticle doesn't grow but it moves on top of the nail plate as the nail is growing.
