A third-generation model, using the same platform as the Ford Contour, was under development intended for release in mid-1998 as a 1999 model. When Ford decided to discontinue the Probe, this new design became the next-generation Mercury Cougar.[25] The name change was intended to attract younger buyers into Mercury showrooms, but this proved unsuccessful.[citation needed] The Escort ZX2, released shortly after the discontinuation of the Probe, was considered the Probe's successor. I actually have an 89 Mazda MX6 GT, it is the sister car to the Probe. Same motor and trans. The V6 is what killed the car. It initially had a 2.3 turbocharged i4 that could handle a surprising amount of power. It came out of the factory with 145hp/ 190 ft-lb of torque at 7psi. Mine was actually pushing somewhere in the area of 300whp on a completely stock motor (not at the moment, stock turbo didn't like 18psi for too long. Currently NA. Yes I know it was stupid of me but damn was it quick, but will be getting a new turbo eventually). It was actually designed to be Ford's first FWD Mustang. But fans of the Mustang wouldn't have it. So Mazda took their blueprints back, and let Ford use their motor for another car.

I have a 1995 Ford Probe GT that I got a little over a year ago that was rather rough. Since I have been daily driving it and did many things to bring it back to life including: Swapping a 2001 Mazda 626 (also sharing the probes drivetrain) KLG4 2.5L V6 into it, Giving it a fresh coat of laser Tinted Metallic paint (the red color seen in the video), lowering it on Yonaka coilovers and a staggered set of ‘Diamond’ steelies, and countless other small things here and there to maintain it. I absolutely love my PGT and think ford got it right with the FWD platform. If any of the haters drove one I think they would feel the same... just saying. The Probe hasn't been in production for almost 22 years and there hasn't been any demand for a return like the Bronco... or the Supra, Challenger....
Plenty of Coyote and Ecoboost Mustangs on the road now. Personally I'm even for an electric, or whatever, Mustang when the time comes. I'm glad the S550 has an IRS.
I've owned a Fox Body and I miss it. Currently I have an SVT Focus that I've had for over 8 years, I love it and it's sentimental...it would be TERRIBLE at being a Mustang if they called it that. Apples and oranges.

There was at least one petition to bring it back. If they did, it would be disappointing because the bar was higher than any one company would allow, but by 2 companies.
Mazda had the KL because they were trying to make a great small 6 cylinder at the time. 7500 rpm, Variable intake resonance for staying in the power, forged steel crank in a split block/cradle no individual mains caps. Made for durability and a pleasing sound. Theoretically good on fuel, I've gotten worse out of an ecoboost 1.6.
They didn't give it the KLZE because of the Cobra. It would have been too close in a straight line and the Probe could turn and didn't ride like a horse.
While Ford put all kinds of crazy options in. Dual 1 touch down windows on the drivers side (I think Mazda owned this trick,) lights in the keyholes and single/dual lock/unlock with the key, battery saver circuit, (for accidentally leaving the lights on.) Special sculpted seats with air bolster and a tilt feature that didn't reset the position. Running daylights, dual airbags (standard in 94.) Premium sound system with a separate EQ, 4 channel amp, sub, and sub amp. I'm sure there's more, still weighed a lot less than a Mustang, 5 stars in the old car tests, barriers in the doors. Sooo much usable space.

Sadly, it developed a mysterious starting problem. Occasionally, it would crank strong but not start. Waiting a few minutes might work, or not. On more than one occasion I had to have it towed to my mechanic. But by the time he got it, it always started right up. Never got it to fail. Out of desperation, he wound up replacing the ignition switch, the distributor, something else I can't remember, and finally the car's computer. Nothing worked. Had to get rid of it. Very sad. To this day I still wonder what it was.

I had black GT. LOVED IT. I did KL-ZE swap, headers, weapon r intake, roaches, Racing Hart C5’s, hawk pads, shock tower braces and greddy exhaust. That’s the best exhaust for this car. Did the headlight mod too. 6 years of trouble free driving until I started modding the stock engine. Did cams, 3 angle valve job, extrude hone intake, Fidanza flywheel and Tec II management. Dude that tuned it blew it up. So I swapped in the KL-ZE before I sold it. I had two of them and both were bulletproof until I started experimenting with them. Boltons on both, I had ZERO problems.
I disagree with OP that it’s expensive to maintain. One of the best long term cars I ever owned. Right up there with my past 350z and RX330.
If I had the space I’d get another one in manual again. Fun beater and it still looks good.

I agree with everything you said except the GT being easy to work on. The engine is packed so tightly in the engine bay, you have to have tiny hands and fingers to get to anything under the hood. I have had two 2nd Gen Probe GT's. Ever tried changing the fuel injectors on one of these? Lol not fun.

    • @DirtRoadAutoRepair
      @DirtRoadAutoRepair 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Dan Romero no idea. My maintenance pretty much consisted of oil changes. Lol (I guess I did use Mobil1 though) only thing besides normal maintenance I can think of that is a regular problem is the distributor on the v6. Ford didn’t put a high enough heat rating on it and they burn up. Four options. 😀 Buy one from Mazda because they made them with a higher heat rating, or buy one from Orielly with a lifetime warranty. Or just keep buying junkyard/eBay/FB/CL parts. Last do the HEI mod. Get on probetalk forums and I think it’s a sticky.

I owned a 1993 GT, and it was awesome! It was cold blue steel, and would change color in different light, as well as light angles.
I did have to get the exhaust fixed 3 times, because it was press fit, and kept coming loose. They finally fixed it, by taking it to Midas, and had it welded, LOL!
I also had to get the heads replaced, because of a machining malfunction during manufacture.
Ford was sooo stupid when they announced that the Probe would be replacing the Mustang, because they're two totally different cars!
After the backlash from the Mustang bunch, Ford decided to drop the Probe line instead.
As advanced as the Probe was in 1993, imagine what it would be today...
I've owned a few cars since then, but the Probe hands down was the most fun car I've ever owned.

The 2.0 is really not bad either, it's basically a 2g eclipse with less rust. Different engine, drivetrain, even platform, and it weighs just under 100ibs more, but performance is nearly identical aside from being more reliable, better chassis, and higher torque. Electrical isn't exactly fun, but they're very modifiable too. I'm on my third probe rn, haven't done anything to it, but there's a guy on yt with a boosted build hitting around 280whp and 270 torque out of a 2.0l. it's more impressive when you realize it's just a well tuned eBay build that I'll bet is more reliable than a good chunk of 90's turbo builds you'll be finding with those numbers.

This car is great but only once RWD converted and that takes too much time and work to do. I helped a friend do it one time and its incredibly involved but the results were worth it. Only con I see to it is it cost a minimum of $10k at a shop or you can do it for $3-4k if you can do the work yourself. We used an IRS from a Lincoln, Wide Bodied it, Caged it, put in a 4.2 Stroker V6 with 330HP N/A, used a slightly modified T-5, and ripped it for days. Fun little car and made a pretty good Daily as well.

I think you left out way too much information about the probe gt. I will attempt to filled that void.
There were a lot of things that made the Probe GT more advanced than the Mustang but not a replacement. I think it was a time where management got scared of the turbo all-wheel-drive eclipses and the type R Integra's. These cars were rivaling the pony cars times to 60mph stock for stock. And they were very tunable and strong. And good for season cars and had good handling and better braking. But for the enthusiasts who would modify their Pony car it was still the way to go. This is where the pony cars got their bad name when they had these modified tuner cars running them down on all the race videos. A lot of times they were V6 models or bone stock V8 models. Dee's tuner front wheel drive cars really shine and handling and dry and wet. But then you start modifying these Pony cars and it's not hard to get them into the elevens and even tens on bone stock internals with just bolt ons on 93 fuel.
So back to the Ford Probe 2nd generation. Yeah it was a Mazda but between the two to Ford definitely looked better.
The good: it handled better than a Mustang, and even better after tge tein coil overs. They had better brakes than the Mustang and it had available abs, Mustang did not have abs in this gen. Same lug bolt pattern as the sn95 Mustang, you could fit 13 inch rotors on the Probe GT fairly easily. The Probe GT also had disc brakes all the way around, Mustang had drums rear. Probe GT also had independent suspension on all four corners. It had a sporty tight feel to it. The car also responded pretty good to turbocharging or supercharging. Mid 300 wheel horsepower was pretty easy. The V6 with headers, off road pipe and borla Cat-Back sounded absolutely amazing. It had a lot of hot body kits available. Very Sleek looking car, good high speed stability. Non-interference motor and pretty reliable. It had a JDM twin, called klze that revved higher and had more power, 200hp, and cheap, bought mine for 500 bucks. My 93 PGT had a probeinator custom tune that redlined at 7800, sounded freaking amazing!
    The bad:
Let's start with the transmission. No LSD which sucked, but more importantly it was pretty weak. Not as weak as the Escort GT transmission. But still didn't handle power very well. I remember the guys who were in The 12s were changing Transmissions fairly often, lol. Compared to the probe the Integra type-r and eclipse turbo we're a lot stronger in the transmission Department. They were also both faster stock even though they were only four cylinders. Compared to the probe they had amazing aftermarket support to. It sucked at the distributor had coil and ignition control module built into it. It was a $350 distributor and was the only time my car failed to start. The car also did have a bit of wheel hop with the stock suspension. Even after the coil overs and upgraded control arm bushings I couldn't completely get rid of it. Maybe it would have been better after LSD? The door panels were the cheapest I have ever seen. They literally broke into because they were two piece design. Even though it had five motor mounts they were not the strongest and it was best upgrade to the polyurethane inserts. I guess the biggest negative of the car was that even though you had a V6 you would still get your ass kicked by Turbo eclipses and type R Integras. Definitely sounded better though. Stock LX Mustangs were in the low 6s so you weren't really touching those. You definitely could give a Mustang GT that was automatic a good run..... A stock one.

How I love these cars. It is so amazing that these are effectively extinct now whereas you can still trip over primered Fox bodies with exhaust leaks, a pair of flow masters, and a bag of weed under the driver's seat.

I always thought that it was rear wheel drive. Very disappointed.😲

I always knew these were FWD... Two years ago I just found out the standard (non VR4) 3000 GT is FWD.

FWD is actually better for cornering and grip because the weight is naturally over the drive wheels!

Why? I had the rear end stepping out in a controlled manner going around corners with such ease, one didn't think twice about it being FWD.

Used to own a 1989 GT with the 2.2L Turbo in it. No the fastest by any means, but a fun car to drive. And it had a lot of weird features... Doug DeMuro should do a review on it - it's right up his alley....

Steering wheel never in the way of the gauges. Never took it out of sport except to see the difference. Cool little trip computer. Easy to swap in a bigger turbo and intercooler to beat unsuspecting Mustangs or Camaros. Little knobs to turn under the bumper in case the lights wouldn't go up. Rear tail lights always half full of water despite four replacements in a year. Super fun to drive.

I loved my 96 GT. That car went so good in the snow and shit. Then the older ones sat higher so were good off road lol I also had the Mazda mx6 but didn’t like it as much as the probe

The red Probe has original wheels but on the wrong side of the car. Amazed how many people did not realise they were directional.
