  • NOI Teacher Tim Beames talks about why acute pain can become chronic with a summary of the neurobiological factors at play.
In this session, Tim delves into the transition from acute to chronic pain, outlining the intricate neurobiology involved. He explores various factors contributing to vulnerability, encompassing lifestyle choices such as poor health, sleep, diet, and inactivity, as well as the impact of life experiences and traumas. Emphasis is placed on the significant influence of emotional states like anxiety and fear on vulnerability.
Tim provides insights into the pivotal role of synapses in strengthening neural pathways and highlights the importance of achieving a balance between excitation and inhibition at the synaptic level. He also touches upon the modifications occurring at the synaptic level, involving changes in gene expression and receptor types.
Throughout the session, it became evident that effectively conveying this complex information to patients is crucial for enhancing pain management strategies.

Dry needling is an unbelievably effective way to reverse both peripheral and central sensitization. Dry needling treats myofascial trigger points which are the hallmark of myofascial pain syndrome. Myofascial pain syndrome is the most common manifestion of chronic pain

Thank you for this. Brilliant. The Winter School looks amazing but being a parent, I have to collect kids at 3.15 😞.

Thank you so much, it's lovely to get an explanation about pain and how it's become unbalanced. Also useful to know that inflammatory response is useful too 🤔 Sounds like letting the body cope in the natural way in the acute stage of injury is better than taking NSAI drugs 🤔 Isn't the body amazing? We've so much more to learn🌟
