Graded Motor Imagery in the Clinic: Practical Applications and Integration
Summary:
In this webinar, Tim Beames, a principal NOI instructor and co-author of the Graded Motor Imagery book, discusses the practical applications and integration of Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) in clinical practice. He explores the different levels of understanding and using GMI, from basic to advanced, and provides insights into how clinicians can incorporate GMI into their treatment plans for various conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome, phantom limb pain, and post-stroke pain.
Key Points:
GMI is a stepwise approach involving three stages: implicit motor imagery, explicit motor imagery, and mirror therapy.
GMI can be used to help clinical situations where there are certain changes evident, such as loss of inhibition or disinhibition affecting movement.
Clinicians can integrate elements of GMI into their clinical reasoning process, such as using the Recognize app to assess attentional bias.
At an advanced level, clinicians can use their knowledge to identify targeted approaches based on the specific features of a patient's presentation.
GMI should be part of an individualized treatment package and not used as a standalone treatment.
Key Timestamps:
02:41 - Brief explanation of Graded Motor Imagery
05:41 - Basic level of understanding and using GMI
09:07 - Intermediate or mid-level of understanding and using GMI
15:48 - Advanced level of understanding and using GMI
23:22 - Discussing the homunculus and somatosensory cortex in relation to GMI
27:42 - Information about Tim Beames' upcoming GMI course
Keywords: Graded Motor Imagery, GMI, clinical practice, complex regional pain syndrome, phantom limb pain, post-stroke pain, attentional bias, clinical reasoning, individualized treatment, neurophysiology, embodiment, body perception, NOI

How do I start using Explain Pain in the clinic?
มุมมอง 1532 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this engaging Q&A, experienced Noigroup teacher Tim Beames tackles three key questions clinicians often ask about explaining pain to patients: 1 "I don't have time to explain pain - what do I do?" Tim highlights how "explaining pain" doesn't require lengthy neurobiology lessons. How we can improve current medical models for treating pain
มุมมอง 2634 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for this Tim. It might be worth doing an update after doing the course with you in-person at NOI headquarters in about 2015!

While I'm sure Tim is a great teacher, I've abandoned the session only 14 minutes into it after listening to what seemed a very disorganized rambling without any practical advice for how we help our clients deal with the real problem of validating their internal experience or how to turn this into an avenue for recovery from persistent pain and its functional impact. I know Tim and Joanna can do better but didn't feel that continuing to listen to this session was going to produce anything that hadn't emerged in the first 14 minutes. Perhaps consulting with David Butler about effective teaching strategies for these Noigroup Clinical Discussions would be a good idea.

Dry needling is an unbelievably effective way to reverse both peripheral and central sensitization. Dry needling treats myofascial trigger points which are the hallmark of myofascial pain syndrome. Myofascial pain syndrome is the most common manifestion of chronic pain

Thank you so much, it's lovely to get an explanation about pain and how it's become unbalanced. Also useful to know that inflammatory response is useful too 🤔 Sounds like letting the body cope in the natural way in the acute stage of injury is better than taking NSAI drugs 🤔 Isn't the body amazing? We've so much more to learn🌟
