Built on a plot for twin houses, the Wall to Wall house is sandwiched between two existing structures in the urban context of Chennai. It is designed for maximum functionality while keeping minimalistic aesthetics in mind.
With the openings being only on the shorter sides, customizing the fenestrations was of prime importance. Hence, open-able shutters with teak wood louvers on the front and rear façade allow light and ventilation throughout the house.
Principal Architect Mahesh Radhakrishnan walks us through this compact house that brings nature inside and creates a connection with the outdoors.

I always feel constructing in a limited space is a challenge as compared to large space which is easy. That is where the architect's intelligence is put to test. Well done.

Comstructing in large spaces is also equal challenge. Because we as architect just go on occupying free space for nothing. We fulfill demands which increases with space. A proper landscape with exact walkways a pool even client asks for a properly planed party space in the same, bbq stations and much much more and all this need to come together beautifully.

Unequivocally, this is the best minimalistic yet innovative design which even I would prefer for congested real estate.
But IMO, the interior of a house that receives direct Sunlight is a much healthier living space.

Nothing great i saw this design in Japanese house designs several years ago. The only started and invented this trend decades ago, they didnt have internet to copy from, so thats original creativity. In India you proudly copy and there are also 3 clown companies to praise this "achievement" and give awards for the same. Akin to our tamil Cinema industry. Give awards to each other....you say im god....ill say your god.....u scratch my back.....then ill scratch yours. LOL. Here copyright means....right to copy. Anyway they get away with it bec theres no copyright on names, titles, designs and methods. Unless patented.
You can do this yourself. Nothing great about the architect here to write home about. All they do is copy and are doing nothing but good planning for the home. If you have time you can really think....how will people enter....when they enter do i want them to see my kitchen or dining table....ok so create zones....flow....how will people move.... will this inhibit movement....its all mostly logic.
Im not an architect, neither do i know anything about civil construction. Yet I can say all the above confidently bec i did it......built my house with no architect, engineer or contractor. Just me and civil workers. I also took different points from Japanese homes....anyway these architects will do that only. I built a home with partly cantilevered (counter weighted) projected deck, floating cantilever staircase and the works....with a small swimming pool......if anything they should give me a "YeahArchitects" award, because i did all this WITHOUT STUDYING ARCHITECTURE its a greater achievement than what they do. Even i had just 1 ground, yet i have a huge compound space in-spite of multi bedroom with foyer, visitors powder room, all that. And im not great and all....all of you home owners can do it, you will feel more accomplishment and the home will seem to "fit" you more. Needs dedication and visualization thats all, and lots of sketching. Just think and see all the designs you can....copy styles... not the whole house... from the internet, the architects are doing just that, why do you think after the internet came only Indian architects designs started showing similarities to Japanese modern homes etc, esp now in the last 5 years, nothing but they keep on browsing, take a little from here...a little from there....mix n match. Also they have resources, they keep visiting and finding who all are making things with new materials.... metal fabricators....new types of wood...etc etc. Just R&D and an ounce of creativity. Now people passing by stop and take selfies in front of my house....though sometimes i feel irritated but then....if its on a public road anyone can photograph it without breaching privacy so...its ok. So all this you can do. Dont copy from our guys....bec they themselves are copying from the internet and the west....so you also go directly to the source.
