    This video is all about the SOFT PALATE, and how keeping it lifted when you sing improves your ability to reach those high notes AND develop more beautiful singing tone. Get my free PDF on improving your tone here: join.camillevanniekerk.com/to...
    Stick around for an EXERCISE at 4:10 and STYLE EXAMPLES at 5:17, including "I'm Not the Only One" (Sam Smith), "Caro Mio Ben" (Giuseppe Giordani), and "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (Ella Fitgerald).
    TIPS to lift the soft palate and keep it lifted include (1) Maintaining a pre-yawn position, (2) Lifting the cheeks & brows, (3) Inhaling as if you're smelling something yummy, (4) Opening the eyes, (5) Imagining the ears are widening/spreading apart.

    Why don't you have a million subs!?! Great lesson thank you. I'm doing electronic rock and I probably do this more unconciously than not and only on certain songs. Now I will know how to do it when I need it.

    This was extremely helpful, thank you. I improved my voice a lot in just a day with this but it will take practice to make it automatic and consistent. I basically pretend i'm just about to yawn while singing higher notes and everything opens right up. Then I go too far and actually yawn oops

    Also how to make my voice sound good with belting exercise

    • @CamillevanNiekerkMusic
      @CamillevanNiekerkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the meantime, Natalie Weiss is an incredible belting instructor - you can see her private coaching videos on TH-cam!

  • @alexandrinapetrova9995

    Amazing tips. Does this lesson have to do with belting and mixing? I'm still kinda lost and don't know the difference.

    • @CamillevanNiekerkMusic
      @CamillevanNiekerkMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Belting vs. mixing is a different topic, but some singers will adjust the soft palate depending on their desired tone! Belting is a style in which the singer is "boosting" higher frequencies by adjusting their larynx a little higher, their mouth a little wider, and their tongue a little more forward. Mixing is singing with a balance of "chest voice" function and "head voice" function. The healthiest belt is mixed voice with those "belting style" adjustments mentioned above!

      See this lesson for a 'trained yawn" to practice tongue & palate independence (I've copied the link at the point where that specific exercise begins): th-cam.com/video/pthQnibUlRE/w-d-xo.html

    what am i doing wrong if lifting my soft palate makes me strain my vocal chords?

    • @CamillevanNiekerkMusic
      @CamillevanNiekerkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd look in a mirror and see if your larynx is dropping considerably. We naturally associate a lifted palate with a dropped larynx (because that's the position we take when we yawn), but you don't really want to sing with a low larynx unless you're in the classical/operatic style and your teacher recommends that. See if you can gently lift your soft palate by raising your brows/cheeks without lowering your larynx - let me know how it goes!

  • @alisonbliss2556

    • @CamillevanNiekerkMusic

      I recommend training for a while on lip trills, humming, or singing through a straw (to more easily find balance) and then open back up to vowels!
