I've gotten a lot better in the 3.5 years since this video came out, haha. You should check out the new stuff on this channel. This video is kind of embarrassing. Thanks for watching!
InvictaMusic I've got to be honest, it did feel a little awkward during certain parts... nothing to be embarrassed about man, you did a really great job. I will have to check out some of your newer stuff for sure though. Thanks for sharing all your insight and wisdom. This is something I really want to learn to do well.
This video is hands down THE best "How to" scream/sing with rasp video on youtube. Both guys really know what they're doing and i've learned A LOT from it! Thank you guys, you are dope!
this is exactly what I needed. was able to scream before but often it sounded a beat odd and after a few minutes my voice for guttural or "normal" singing was gone. just starting with this "speaking" with your lower chords makes it so much easier for me. thanks mate!
Yeah. I have every CD the Deftones have put out-- some folks have commented on this video acting like I was hating on them. They're one of my band's bigger influences, but bad technique is bad technique. The hard living is a factor too.
Love your voice man, great explanation on it too. Definitely subbed. I checked out your band recordings and they are really good, great sound! Hope to hear more soon!!
i scream 2 been doing it for about 3 years now n i can do like the death growl shreiks and all sorts of screaming i found it a little help i try to watch and learn as much as i can i got some more in sight thanks
@Slim2J @Slim2J It's not difficult to switch from distortion and back because the distortion isn't produced in the same location in the throat as your singing pitch. Check out the other tutorial videos for a more in-depth explanation, and thanks for the kind words.
+dwi tomo That last part wasn't really that good, vocally... The other guy had better singing technique. I'm not talking about the screaming though, but I liked the sound!
It's "Driven Into the Ground," and this is currently the only released snippet of it. Our new album "A Portrait of Home" will be released in September, with a full studio recording of it. You'll be able to get it on iTunes, Spotify, Rhapsody, Amazon, etc.
well i learned from her dvd and im very satisfied! I take classical singing lessons so i know how to breathe and it took me pretty much 30 minutes to learn fry and about a month of practice to master it. i can scream very easily now and for several hours tiring my throat and its almost as efficient as randy blythe's (e.g) i can hold long lasting notes and many more... the only problem with this kind of scream is that it sounds pretty low but that is fixed with the mic :)
@SCMusic15 killswitch engage (with howard) and this calling both use exhale, more specifically false chord. trivium uses fry or power fry depending on what people call it
I completely agree with you on the emotion being necessary, but didn't have time to mention it. You might feel that its not there, but its hard to feel the intensity on an acoustic guitar. The lyrics are "you ruined my hope, /and blamed me for your pain/! ... ... I'm left screaming /in my wasted dream/!" These are emotional lyrics, and the screams reflect that. While not all our songs stick 100% to that, it's definitely something I try to follow.
Guy I'm a professional opera singer and am studying voice for so many years and worked with so many singers and at the same time I sang in a lot of rock and some metal bands when I was in my teens so I know very well what I'm talking about.
Hey man thanks for this been watching your tutorial videos to and you know the whole Melissa cross thing I do that but only with highs - my lows need some working on but I'm doing them right ;) thanks for all this bro
lol im assumeing ur right cuz he hasent responded in a month, but thanks for this ive been told that i have an ok screaming voice and one of my frends asked me to join his small band to do screaming vocals and im gonna keep what you were saying in mind so thanks
It sounds hard... Everytime I try it my throat hurts. Are those vestibular folds located where the nose and the mouth merge? I mean should I feel they way I feel when I'm cleaning my throat?
@ElegyForTheMasses That would be because usually our progressive metal isn't played on an acoustic guitar which was necessary for the video, haha. Check our MySpace for some less-random non-acoustic stuff.
Dude like at first i didnt quite get what you were saying about how you do the distortion about how theres still singing underneath or whatever. Well i started messing around and dude! oh my josh i totaly get it know, yeah it did tickle but its been about a week sinse ive been practicing and it is starting do sound real good and im not having any problems with my throat like i used to when i tried to teach myself how to " scream " . Just wanted to say THANK YOU! :)
The song at the end is "Driven Into the Ground." You can hear a sample on our teaser video for our new album "A Portrait of Home," and the song itself is on the album. Buy it on CDBaby or iTunes!
Sounds good, one problem... can't really figure out what the bottom voice is... I know how to get a raspy voice that hurts to do after a few seconds, but that is obviously wrong I suppose...
can anyone tell me why my voice loses sharpness while singing(screaming parts actually). Like layne staley and kurt cobain and chris cornell. their screams are wonderful and consistently sharp. How? Why?
Hmm, maybe at some point. You're the first one to ask us for it. We have been debating about releasing an acoustic song, and there's been some discussion about it at our FaceBook page, facebook.com/invictamusic.
@rais3tong Yeah, they recently put up some screaming lessons with Michael Barnes from RED. They're not bad, if you can stomach being sold music products for 75% of it.
Good video, Chino messed his voice up by not taking care of it. Not saying his technique was perfect but drinking, smoking, and not warming up took there tool.
Well, it would've been up by now, but our 3/4 finished EP got completely lost in a hard drive crash that God knows why our producer didn't have backed up. So no estimated release date now.
M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold and David Draimon of Disturbed have both required surgery to repair damaged vocal cords after prolonged incorrect technique. Both have changed style and gone through therapy to continue singing. But yes, it does happen.
have you ever met anyone with 'torn up vocal chords'..i hear ppl warn of it all the time, but never seen it! what dont kill you makes you stronger maybe?? dont get me wrong, not saying it dont happen, i've just never seen it..yet!
Real Madridista Chester is very consistent, and knows his voice very well. But when it comes to general sound and use of range its prototype damn poor. Corey... he's basically chino.
i've been getting pain in my lower left back from screams, feels like the muscle. is that from too much emphasis on diaphragm or something else i'm probably doing wrong?
@Slim2J Yeah when you "scream" your true vocal chords shouldn't ever engage bro. I Scream Growl and sing all day and the only time my voice ever feels sore is when I get sick and cant stop coughing. A lot of people refer to them as "false chords". The same chords you engage when whispering.
yeah chino doesnt sound like hes killing himself at all....he switches from clean vocals to dirty like its nothing....he plays from his fucking heart and it doesnt seem to hurt him
Damn, he actually sings pretty well too!

The Deftones are my inspiration for singing, reason I am watching these types of videos.
Yeah. I have every CD the Deftones have put out-- some folks have commented on this video acting like I was hating on them. They're one of my band's bigger influences, but bad technique is bad technique. The hard living is a factor too.
This guy is really good! I'm doing growl/scream vocals for couple of years now and i must admitt that his explanation is spot on.
this was in results for search on "fix gurgling toilet"
Was it really? Hah! That's hilarious!
@megafishfart Disturbed was what got me into metal, so that's a huge compliment. Thank you so much.
Thanks for that I will do!
Thank you!

@gebukdrum It's called Driven Into the Ground. This is still the only recording of it thus far!
damn good vocal Technique...

Jesse Nemitz, a former vocal coach for Brett Manning Studios.
We are on Spotify. Just search for Invicta or for our album Split by the Sun. Thanks!
He's just playing it. He's so good, man.
@xXOrla95Xx D-J, the lead guitarist/primary songwriter for Invicta.

A quick tutorial on how metal vocals are done, by Mike Schii of Invicta, recorded at Brett Manning Studios.
@fongusman I believe he just didn't push out as much air, since he was just using the scream in an example.
dude...this is GENIUS!!
This guy is awesome, great learning.
Mike Schii, from the band Invicta.
the songs got a Taproot vibe! helpful video dude, thanks!
Hey man thanks for this been watching your tutorial videos to and you know the whole Melissa cross thing I do that but only with highs - my lows need some working on but I'm doing them right ;) thanks for all this bro

I have that same shirt- BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE
It sounds hard... Everytime I try it my throat hurts. Are those vestibular folds located where the nose and the mouth merge? I mean should I feel they way I feel when I'm cleaning my throat?

Men great singing !
Did you had to practice a lot so that the listener could understand what you are singing when you scream?
Dude like at first i didnt quite get what you were saying about how you do the distortion about how theres still singing underneath or whatever. Well i started messing around and dude! oh my josh i totaly get it know, yeah it did tickle but its been about a week sinse ive been practicing and it is starting do sound real good and im not having any problems with my throat like i used to when i tried to teach myself how to " scream " . Just wanted to say THANK YOU! :)
@InvictalMusic oh i see thank you : ) and by red what do you mean by that ??
The song at the end is "Driven Into the Ground." You can hear a sample on our teaser video for our new album "A Portrait of Home," and the song itself is on the album. Buy it on CDBaby or iTunes!

Sounds good, one problem... can't really figure out what the bottom voice is... I know how to get a raspy voice that hurts to do after a few seconds, but that is obviously wrong I suppose...
Yeah, I saw them live not long ago, and you're right about his technique. Layne was an amazing vocalist though!
i have no idea what hes talking about... but that was really awsome
awesome vocalist
Awesome! Where can I find to listen full version of your song at the end?
That Voice!!!
can anyone tell me why my voice loses sharpness while singing(screaming parts actually).
Like layne staley and kurt cobain and chris cornell. their screams are wonderful and consistently sharp. How? Why?
How do you practise using your bottom vocal chords? I NEED to learn to do this!
Hmm, maybe at some point. You're the first one to ask us for it. We have been debating about releasing an acoustic song, and there's been some discussion about it at our FaceBook page, facebook.com/invictamusic.
nice....thanks for sharing
Who's the guy behind the keyboard I loved his vocals when he showed it, more of him.
@rais3tong Yeah, they recently put up some screaming lessons with Michael Barnes from RED. They're not bad, if you can stomach being sold music products for 75% of it.
very good..
His name is Jesse Nemitz
Good video, Chino messed his voice up by not taking care of it. Not saying his technique was perfect but drinking, smoking, and not warming up took there tool.

Please tell me the name of this song, it's some of the best I've ever heard.

Well, it would've been up by now, but our 3/4 finished EP got completely lost in a hard drive crash that God knows why our producer didn't have backed up. So no estimated release date now.

How did you find your false chords? i can scream but not really sure how to incorporate that edge into my regular singing voice.
@Jamespm666 Chest voice, about a G on a good day. Counting mix/head, I have about a 4.5 octave usable range.
Wow amazing clean voice too dude! Holy shit!
have you ever met anyone with 'torn up vocal chords'..i hear ppl warn of it all the time, but never seen it! what dont kill you makes you stronger maybe?? dont get me wrong, not saying it dont happen, i've just never seen it..yet!
Best singers in terms of screaming are Chester, James and Corey hands down!
Real Madridista Chester is very consistent, and knows his voice very well. But when it comes to general sound and use of range its prototype damn poor. Corey... he's basically chino.
hey does singing success screaming teaching ?
Who's the ride playing the guitar at the end?
i've been getting pain in my lower left back from screams, feels like the muscle. is that from too much emphasis on diaphragm or something else i'm probably doing wrong?
I find it hard to find your music.
are you on Spotify?
your scream sounds really natural and not like your in pain.
I'd love to perfect this art.
First thing I notice was his T-shirt! aww :D AiC
Any one remember Cyrus from the show HBO's OZ? I think that's him at 3:20
AMAZING! NOT LIE
at the beginning the dude sounded like a wrestler when he spoke with the bottom cords , thanks alot for clearing up that from my mind :)
Feel free to tell me which of my points are incorrect and I'll add some annotations correcting them.
