I feel like a mention of the soft palate was incredibly warranted. Lift the soft palate and you block off the nasal port, leaving a full, dopey mouth sound. Leave the soft palate down and the sound travels into the nose. Somewhere in the middle (a raised soft palate that still allows air to travel into the nose) is a good balanced approach. This "split resonance" method allows for both the fullness of the mouth resonator and the sweetness of the nasal resonator.
Little Columbus wow.. so true.. i didn't realize the anatomy of it all and now it makes sense as to why ive been struggling!! eurika!! i was born with a cleft lift and soft palate.. have had a couple corrective surgeries and all is okay, but from a singing standpoint I'm definitely more aware of some of my growth needs with my singing abilities do too the inability to master this technique. such a great video and so challenging and encouraging :-)
Little Columbus but if do that technique i can't focus on my larynx i just don't wanna be strain. And for you guys who wanna sing in comfort zone just use the video's technique
Great explanation Jesse - you make a complex issue simple to understand. I've studied voice for a long time and find your approach and affable manner a breath of fresh air. Your skills as a coach are an asset to Manning's organization.

@Sierra3105 It smooths out your range for breaks and combines the registers. Balancing the registers is key to extending your usable range. When you break often its because you don't have the right balance of light and dark (to use his analogy) in producing the tone.
THANKS Jesse!!! I just discover i can actually slide from head voice to a solid mix!!!!!! watched this years ago, cud not get it, now finally a promising progress!!!
wow Jesse, thank you so much. This one tip gave me so much confidence in my voice for my solo in 2 weeks. some singing teachers don't even tell you this when you pay them and you're doing this for free. for anyone who wants to know why this technique works: making a small sound forces you not to strain your voice because you have to have the right resonating space. if it hurts when you sing high notes, you're not doing it right and you should try finding a space where you can sing softly
I was having problems with my tone and as soon as I see this video they're gone; not even an hour, literally as soon as I saw this video (in mere 4 minutes). I still can't get it loud yet but thank you so very much sir, you are my savior :D
Your voice is just beautiful! I am a singer myself & can hit hight notes@ times but not always so this helps me out ALOT! Thanks so much 4 posting this video ;)
Head and mask resonance is such an important part of getting through the bridge. I only started to learn it a few weeks ago, and not only is my bridge becoming easier, but my tone is really improving. On some notes it almost feels like I have a pneumatic drill in my face!
Oh my gosh thank you so much for this video, I'm a "good" singer according to my family. In all honesty I just hear a note and repeat it, in a soft voice. Lately I've been trying to work on a "loud voice" like a belt or something so i could have strength and vibrato. I just spent an hour singing karaoke to christina aguilera songs and my throat hurts. I understand now. Your tension vs strain video as well as this video enlightened me. Thank you so much!!!
So the 'light resonance' that is referred to is nasal resonance. The 'dark resonance' that is referred to the resonance and vibrations through the the remainder of the areas that the vocals travel through. By blocking and unblocking your nose with your fingers you can hear the difference.
@trudbol The Nasal cavity can act as a resonator to help bridge head and chest.... If you just bridge head and chest without using the nasal cavity it sounds very dull and lacking, The tips make more sense if you've used Singing Success or Mastering Mix. These videos are really meant more for users of Singing Success and for those who own the program it's very helpful.
I love it so much... Thanks so much for teaching us about the technical in singing... Hope that you're always sharing with us regarding the technicals in singing. Lots of love from Malaysia... 😁

THIS TIP HELPED ME SO MUCH!! BTW like another user said try to make the intro with the singing "e" less loud and annoying! i see all of the tips but has to be aware to turn the volume down untill the intro ends.
Thats why my voice is loud and sounds ring-y at middle - high notes without a lot of effort. I think this kind of technique is great. If your voice is already balancy and resonant it doesn't means you don't have to practice anymore. I keep practicing to keep my voice going but without over using. Nice Video👌
This is similar to the classical chiaroscuro from what I reckon - balancing that brightness and darkness together (but for pop it leans more towards the brighter side). Correct me if I am wrong though.
@smparsons111 The vocal chords thin out but are shaped up and down not left and right. Look at an anatomy book. They start way up high above the larynx and stretch all the way down to your trachea. Also, they are layered with a fine film in three different layers. If I wanted to make something "thin out" and they are shaped up and down I wouldn't want to compress in at all. When you tighten those muscles you lose the colors that come from the layering.
this guy by far sounds the most believable from all the coaches of them. the chef brett manning just sounds like the biggest swindler on earth to me...
Thank you so much for all of ur videos they are helpping me alot. Thank you for sharing with us with ur tips they are amazing, you are amaizing. I would love to have techer like you but in some way you are techer for me cos Iam lorning from you a lot. And thanks again for spending ur time on recording this videos. I hope u understand what I wrote ( English is not my first language-not difficult to see haha ) Have nice weekend Paulina
HELP! Mmh, I can actually that exercise but when i try to sing in mix, i still lack depth. I tried adding some pharyngeal resonance but that only makes it sound slightly squeaky and girl-like. What can i do to get more chest presence? Reply pleaseeee. I'm on the CD3 of the technique section of the course.
@RickSpyder we've been singing for about the same amount of years. did you always have a head voice for singing high notes or like me did you drive your chest voice up (strain) to hit them. just looking for some hope that it's never too late to train your head voice from sing the wrong way for so long. Cheers
@ItsFaltzer The problem with singing is that you think you should push out the air through your throat and mouth. Everyone thinks that is how to project. Sound is a combination of air and vibrations. The body controls the air down at the diaphram, lateral muscles and below the trachea. When you have sound happening in your throat and skull you need to "sing inside yourself" as my hero, Enrico Caruso said!! Singing should feel like you are making sound travel our of your head backwards.
this video is really helpful... it made me realize my biggest mistake in singing... thnku very much...:)) is there any exercise so that we can balance our resonance coz i either gets low or high ???
@KaleidoscopeAct Wait, I'm confused. I thought we were supposed to use the circothyroid to sing high notes because the vocal cords have to thin out, right?
The higher you sing the lower down you should place the larynx to prevent it from going too high? to avoid sounding off in low notes and to sound shrill sounding in sharp boots, am I in right ? You are so good
Yes but when you sing songs you don't have to keep a low larynx the whole time. If its a low larynx exercise then yes it helps avoid the shrill sound but when you sing you want to start woofy (low larynx) but then let it stabilize. The tendency is to raise the larynx, especially for high notes, but if you start with a low larynx and then let it balance in the middle it'll give you a not too swallowed or strained sound.
@MrBaritonevoce I hit an A5 in mix earlier and I wasn't sure if it was too nasally, it was resonant and it felt natural. But then I purposely tried hitting the same note too nasally and it was discomforting, does this mean I hit it correctly?? Please reply!!!
I hit an A5 in mix earlier and I wasn't sure if it was too nasally, it was resonant and it felt natural. But then I purposely tried hitting the same note too nasally and it was discomforting, does this mean I hit it correctly?? Please reply!!!
Is this applicable for a 16-year old male singer? I can't feel the balance resonance he's saying. I end up having strain on my neck and a high larynx. Can somebody explain it to me? please???
Hi there! I was wondering if you could answer me this...let's say you plugged your nose when you sing in your head voice. Will your voice sound any different?
I know i'm late on this but when i do it the "Correct" way. Start out light. Do exactly what he does. That same clear area he says happens. Instead its a crackle mess.
@ 2:03 "...you feel that air, you feel that sound moving above the palate, always, even on the bottom. So if I go down here and I'm mmmMMM-lost it at the top... " ...you'll take it from there :D
A lifted soft palate creates more space for the sound, which helps make it brighter, louder, and more resonant in the front of the face. A dropped soft palate allows for sound to move into the nasal passages, which allows for nasal consonants (m, n, ng). A lifted soft palate lends itself to a classical sound while a relaxed soft palate lends itself to a more commercial sound. Let us know if you have any more questions.
I feel like a mention of the soft palate was incredibly warranted. Lift the soft palate and you block off the nasal port, leaving a full, dopey mouth sound. Hey, do you know about singing?

Is there a way to train and feel that lift of the soft palate but not fully, only partially?
Man you look like spider man when he goes bad with the black suit lol. And good voice bro
Just boom tings lol emo peter
OMG i thought the same thing xD
Damn, one of the best singing tips I've heard. Incredibly helpful. Thanks a bunch!!

Dear Jesse Nemitz, I love you! Your so great at teaching and your voice sounds great!
Sing!!! I think we would all love to hear you sing.
I love how you stay in focus. Not constantly apologizing for doing examples that might be less comfortable for other people.
This guy really know how to explain stuff.

I knew that just one person sings effortless, Aretha Franklin, and this guy too OMG
this is totally the guy of step brothers. lol
@KaleidoscopeAct How can your air stop at your diaphragm, your diaphragm is underneath your lungs.
So you never intentionally close the soft palate?
A lifted soft palate creates more space for the sound, which helps make it brighter, louder, and more resonant in the front of the face. A dropped soft palate allows for sound to move into the nasal passages, which allows for nasal consonants (m, n, ng). when he sings the mam mam mam thingy , is he using vibrato?
its a vocal fry actually
in top, it doesnt resonates, how can you do it? my top note become all straight.
does he lisp?
