  • For the 1964 World Sportscar Championship Shelby prepared five roadsters for the Division III class that competed against the Ferrari 250 GTO, Jaguar E-Type. These supported the new Cobra Daytona Coupe throughout many legs of the season.
To satisfy FIA requirements, Shelby had to modify the Championship cars. They were fitted with wider flares, twin oil-cooler scoops, a more canted front window and characteristic dents in the trunk lid to clear the FIA suitcase.
On the 26th of April, Shelby made history by sending four FIA Cobras to the Targa Florio. Dan Gurney set the lap record in CSX2323. It was the only car to finish the race in 8th place overall.
Later on the season, Bob Bondurant won his class at the 1964 Freiburg-Schauinsland Hillclimb and 1964 Swiss Mountain Grand Prix in CSX2345. In 1965 the car was fielded by the Alan Mann Racing Team and went on to score three more class victories including the Tourist Trophy.
Of the five FIA roadsters: CSX2259, CSX2260. CSX2301, CSX2323, and CSX2345; the #21 CSX2345 car from the Shelby American Collection in Boulder, Colorado is completely unrestored. Having being parked in 1965 after its last race, the car has only been cleaned.

Smart choice going with a volt meter. Less chance of under dash fire!

    Nice.
The demister vents seem to be facing the wrong way.

It's so you can see what's behind you, quite common on most cars

Additionally, the 289FIA Cobras had a "cheater" windscreen which would angle backward a bit at speed - so a windshield-mounted rearview wouldn't work as it'd then be pointing at the trunk (boot).
