Wow!!! You brought back memories. When I was six years old my mother taught me the I, IV, and V chord at the same time teaching me how to read the music from the hymnal.
I use to sneak and try to play anything I heard on the radio and my first complete song was from the old Batman & Robin series playing the I, IV, V Chord Progressions. LOL!!!

This is a great foundation for building dexterity and consciously UNDERSTANDING which keys to press based on the notes within the primary chords. Genius teaching because without this, playing by ear within the number system would be like walking on water w/o a life vest. This method allows a musician to build intentional playing as opposed to a trial/error approach. Great content brother.

All I can say, as a sneaky member on You Tube, is get to be a member. This guy is Dope and de-mystifies what and when to practice without skipping the basics. Just do the work and watch it appear.

I was taught piano with the Thompson classical songbook, but later on (3rd-4th grade (piano lessons) I wanted 2 learn 2 play Gospel music. Yes, I could play Bach, Chopin, Mozart, but in learning 2 play Gospel music I had 2 start with the 3 chord method. CEG-CFF-BDG. That was my foundation . Later I was introduced 2 connecting chords & it proceeded from there.

SEAN, I need you to know that this video means everything to me, as a learning gospel player this has answered SO many questions and has given me the framework from which to build on. It truly says something as a beginner player when I know how to play dominant and diminished cords but couldn't figure out how to play to a song until now..

I’ve been playing piano for about 5 years now. I’ve played many gigs (church and all). I’ve played in Mexico City World Trade Center for jazz, Latin, and gospel music along with weddings and local gigs but I have been humbled extremely. I’ve been self taught ever since I started. While I have learned a lot I have missed so much and watching even the beginners portion was incredibly informative. It opened a new perspective and really allowed me to understand the music I already knew how to play and be able to interpret music I struggled understanding. I am definitely adding this to my shopping list when I have the means to invest in myself. But in the meantime I will take advantage of the beautiful nuggets of knowledge here on TH-cam. With much gratitude I give you my appreciation!!

    • @allanjeong

I think the main point in this video is that at the most basic level, you generally have only three chord options (8:56) to go with the melodic notes on the strong beats (so long as it's not passing note as in hap-py-BIRTH-day). For what ever song you're playing (and what ever unique chord progression that goes with the song, not just I IV V as noted at 2:37) and for what ever key you're playing the song, know that you can add a basic chord (or find the root note to play whatever chord you want) by playing the melodic note as note 1, 3, or 5 of the chord. And that's all there is to it for starters! : -)

i’m 19 and started piano lessons for classical music at age 5. we learned those basics that you taught in the video (Ceg-cfa-bdg) didn’t realize that it was helpful until now. i’m good at reading music and all those classical stuff.
but after i started college, i wanted to learn more music theory and learn how to play jazzy gospel chords. so ty for this video!

I'm a beginner and just trying to establish a foundation and routine to learn to play in the different keys. I've been working on trying to determine what chords I should learn and how to plan when learning a song.
This presentation is amazing to me because one person I was started to study and take online lessons from was saying you focus on the bass note and just let that determine the chords you play. But your approach is the harmonize with the melody. To me this is the secret to the special gifting and approach that you have that I love and this is the missing key for me to focus on the melody and harmonize the melody versus finding the bass note and matching that!!
My question is do you always set alarm at 9:00 with the melody or do you ever use the bass note to guide you also?

@@omorganstudios yeah, its more important for you to get the concept of a 2-5-1, and 7-3-6 is just a minor 2-5-1... understand the concept first, then go into other things
