    Definitely man. I'm sharing this to all my church band members. This helps especially that I'm young and often feel stuck on how to practice and what to practice on the keys.

      Yeah, feeling stuck is common... especially if folks end of teaching themselves... gotta have direction. Please share bro!

    I'm a culprit of number 5 (Not spending long enough on the material). You get excited about learning a new move from Mike Bereal or Cory Henry and then four months later I'm hitting my head against the wall because I feel stuck. No my friend, you got too excited and didn't spend time on the material.
    "Whatever you wanna keep, you must repeat", that is going to be the motto for 2021.
    Great video doc.

    I really get it. My expectations of running before I can jog or walk are truly unachievable. Fact!! That inner anxiety of needing to get somewhere quickly needs to be confronted daily for my temperment. I need to value myself to take the time, in the same way that my golf coach took me step by baby steps to achieve a continuing life of improvement. Gotta get the book you referred to.

    I read the book a month or two ago and it was so insightful. You truly have to fall in love with whatever you want to improve at, and then it will become less hard trying to accomplish.
    One other part I loved in the book was when it mentioned to stop worrying too much about the goals and focus more on the systems. When you make an authentic and detail system/practice schedule to achieve your goals, then the goals will start to manifest on their own. That was very prophetic in my opinion. Thank you for this Sean!

    Thank you so much Sean! This has been my problem all along. My mind struggles to focus because I'm always thinking about all of the songs and progressions I need to learn and sometimes I end up not getting much done. This has helped me tremendously. I do better with a plan and schedule rather than just practicing whenever. I've already grown just from the time this video was published. It seems when I have too many choices I end up not making a choice..It's overwhelming at times. I'm working on it.

    I'm stealing all of these because they are great. One thing that has helped me and took me to another level was buying the sheet music and checking behind what I heard and played by ear. Even if you can't read you can buy the digital version and it plays the music for you on an app. I just bought Lord you are good by Todd Galbert and stole alot new chords and progressions from it. I've previously learned difficult parts Donald Lawrence John p kee and James Hall by sheet music as well. It's not that hard to read, you can use the technique you learned in elementary school to write the notes from the chords shown on the sheet.

    Hey Sean I love this. Excuse my ignorance but I'm struggling to make the distinction between practicing songs and working on vocabulary. I might be wrong but I seem to recall you saying that we expand our vocabulary by memorising songs. I'm just struggling to understand the difference between the two as you refer to them in this video. Also, do you time manage a practice i.e. 5 mins fundamentals 5 mins Songs 5 mins Vocabulary? I seem to recall you using the two minute rule with a student in one of your other videos. Apologies Sean, I'm overflowing with questions as I watch your channel A LOT!!!

    • @SeanWilsonPiano
      @SeanWilsonPiano  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man great question actually. And you’re right the distinction could be clearer on the vid. You learn vocabulary from songs. My vocabulary is the amount of chords I know and can use in various contexts. So you wanna practice using various chords in different contexts. So for this video, you are getting vocab from songs yes, but taking it to other songs and situations is where you extend that vocab and deepen it

    • @rickyjohnny563
      @rickyjohnny563 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah okay. I think I get it. It's a bit like learning a pentatonic lick and figuring out how you can plug it into different songs and solos. Except in this case you mean chords and inversions. I hope I've got that right. Cool stuff. Thanks Sean.
