Aw, I was excited when I saw you were reacting to this song and was hoping your reaction was going to be more positive. One of my very favorites from Level 42.

I don't remember this one being a big hit here in the U.S. but it was one of my favorites from "Running in the Family" and in general. Such a beautiful, sad song. Love the falsetto near the end.

Please check out « Something About You », « Lessons in Love », « Running in the Family » which were their 85, 86 and 87 big hits. The lead singer Mark King is one of the best slap bass player in the world

The ultimate Level 42 song for me is Hot Water. The video is great, but the extended mix is sensational. So very very hot, I know you'd love it. No need to react to it but definitely check out the extended mix for yourself, it has one of the best 80's dance grooves ever!

This band started in 1980 as a jazz-funk fusion band. Their first albums featured several instrumental tracks, sometimes 7 minutes long, where Mark King slap bass playing was prominent. Another distinctive feature of them is the harmonies between Mark King lead vocals and keyboardist Mike Lindup falsetto singing. I saw them in 1987 in Paris after they played in Wembley stadium in London. The original band split in 1988 when the Gould brothers (drummer and guitarist) left. Drummer Gary Husband joined along with guitarist Alan Murphy who unfortunately died from AIDS one year later. You can check out « Take Care of Yourself » and its funny video from this era. The band stopped in 1994… and reformed in 2001 and has been releasing a new studio album in 2006, ànd touring in Europe ever since.

Love this song. You skipped over 30 seconds of it, d'oh! Though they had a few nice ballads like this one, they're mostly known for the funky bass of the lead singer.... which this song doesn't have. So, not the best one to start with if you don't know the band.

I agree that it's particularly sweet and sad. Why a B side? It was released as an A-side single, and reached the top 10 in the UK and the Netherlands.

Should someone tell this doofus, Mark King is one of the best bass guitar players in the world. And level 42 is not pop.

I second that about his bass playing. (Also he's an amazing singer and has never sounded "nasally" to me.)

Wow! Weird choice! I personally love it. Plus it’s the radio edit/remix? The album version is better. But I’ll love this band until the end of time. Do a different track, though! Love Games!

Definitely the first reactor I've seen do this song from Level 42, which is interesting already. The instrumental bridge and outro with keyboardist and second vocalist Mike Lindup's falsetto at the end was always my favorite.
You should dig into Level 42's catalogue of music. They were formed in 1980 and have done all kinds of genres from instrumental jazz funk, Soul, pop, and pop/rock. Their most successful song in America was "Something About You" which was a top ten hit in spring 1986. "Lessons in Love," was a top twenty US hit. Most of their other songs were bigger hits in The UK and Germany such as "Love Games," "The Sun Goes Down," "Children Say," "Starchild," and "Hot Water" just to name a few. They are also a fantastic live band with some instrumental tunes such as "Heathrow," "43," "Sandstorm," and "The Pursuit of Accidents" (the title track of their second album).
They got part of their band name from the book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," with "42" being the answer to the meaning of life.

This is definitely an atypical example for this band, which is generally a jazz-funk outfit. It’s a good song for sure, and you certainly know how to damn something with faint praise! I’d recommend an earlier track or I actually like tracks from their later repertoire like “Man” or “Staring at the Sun”

Level 42 has got some great tunes. This one’s is not a favorite but I like the storyline. Leaving Me Now, Lessons in Love and Children Say are better songs, imo. There are others but these are good to get more sense of the band.
