"Something About You" is a hit song by the British band Level 42, released in 1985. It's one of their most popular and enduring tracks, known for its catchy melody, funky bassline, and memorable chorus.
The song was written by the band's lead vocalist and bassist Mark King, along with keyboardist Mike Lindup and guitarist Phil Gould. It was included on their sixth studio album, "World Machine," which was a commercial success and helped propel Level 42 to international fame.
"Something About You" reached high chart positions in various countries, including the UK, where it peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song's success contributed significantly to Level 42's popularity in the mid-1980s.
The song's lyrics describe the feeling of infatuation and the irresistible pull of attraction towards someone. Its upbeat tempo and infectious groove have made it a staple of 1980s pop music and a favorite among fans of the genre.
"Something About You" remains a beloved classic and is often featured on 1980s nostalgia playlists and radio stations. Its enduring popularity has solidified its status as one of Level 42's signature songs. - เพลง
Is it so wrong to be human afterall? And a great, almost creeping pre-chorus. I appreciate you guys hitting these 80s standards.
Corey is such a happy and positive guy and his vibe is infectious.
Yes!!
mark king is a legendary bass player.
Lead singer is the real deal on the bass.
I worked for this band back in 84. They are great musicians, that slap bass would go on for the whole gig. The bass bins we built each night were 8ft tall…
Back then my GF dragged me to a Tina Turner concert with Level 42 opening in Dallas. Tina was good but L42 was incredible, been a big fan ever since!
*LEVEL 42 - Lessons In Love*
Fenom: “Of course I know this song”
Olliwood: “I ain’t never heard this shit”
Gotta Love the Honesty!!!
LMAO! Gotta love the dynamic!
@@thisisitreactions I Love it!
It’s actually a pretty deep song lyrically - and that slap bass is unreal.
Back in the 80s these boys from the Isle of Wight were one of my favourite bands, slap bass perfection 🇬🇧
Fantastic band with many hits, mark king the lead singer on many of their songs is a fantastic bass guitar player, one of the best in my opinion.
I'm a "hard rock guy" but when this song came on the radio, I was rockin it!
Definitely a great “summer song”…it was big in the summer of ‘86!
To Be With You by Mr Big will blow you away. Soulful as HELL! ‘92.
To this day, I am a die-hard Level 42 fan, and have been since this song. The entire album, "World Machine," which contains this track, is stellar. Lots of mentions here for "Lessons in Love" & "Children Say," both of which are excellent. Some of their most interesting stuff is earlier in their repertoire, including an album produced by members of EWF. Thanks for giving this some well-deserved love!
Check out there song Lessons in Love..killer tune...Mark King is a killer bass player
Y'all should check out their next biggest hit in the US, "Lessons in Love". Their early stuff was WAY more Jazz-Funk, too. Check out "Starchild" for that era.
My favorite song of the 80's, encapsulates that entire period of time for me. Absolutely love it!
You should really check out Lessons in Love. Really funky!!!
Ikr? Much better than this one.
Level 42 is where it's at....smooth, got that 80s synthetic, lil groove, thumping bass, always a good vibe....keep up the good work, enjoy yalls thang....the lead singers specialty is that slap base
Reminds me of my dear, departed Dad he loved Level 42 😊 nice track, love it. Thanks for the memories ❤
Should point out that the band had two vocalists - Mark King, the bassist is the lead but the falsetto voice is the keyboard player Mike Lindup.
The early to mid 80s was happening in the UK 🇬🇧. I was stationed in the UK from 82 to 85 and the music scene was awesome!
This was a big hit when it came out. I remember it on the radio all the time and then buying it cause I loved it. I was a teen in the 80's and it was the best time for great music.
Level 42 was definitely one of the best groups in the 80's. To me this was a great song to cruise down the beach here in Hawaii. Just graduated High School and would cruise to beats just like this.
I was 15 when this song came out and have loved it ever since! Love Level 42❤
80s headbanger here but the first time I heard this song I knew I would have to hide it from my friends!lol
Something about this song catches your ear and attention
The chorus is one you'd swear you heard before. Sound waves and brain waves in sync.
Back in '85 I was 20. I'd pretty much only pogo'd to punk music. Then Level 42 came along and I danced as if on a cloud. Wish I was 20 again. Then, way in the future, the internet brought you 3 chaps reacting to Level 42. Awesome. thank you! One last thing: I'm currently playing an online version of Command & Conquer. One of my bases is about to reach Level 42. Peachy
I’m the Same age and at the time in the mid 80’s I was heavily into prog rock but I was shocked how much I loved this song…I didn’t stray too much back then.
Lessons in love is really good too.
Love the genuine reaction, guys.
Mark King, lead singer, is also the bass player. One of the most underrated bass players out there. Love the slap bass he does in other songs. Check out Lessons in Love
They did this at the LA Taylor Hawkins Foo tribute and I lost my shit. Lol. I looked around and couldn’t believe how no one was as excited as me. Highlight of the tribute for me.
Beautiful song. 😎
When people ask what my favorite 80s song is, I always tell them there are two: "Easy Lover" which you guys know, and this.
Easy lover...yesss!!❤
Love. This song
This was my favorite song 🎵 from the 80s!
This song is one of my favorites from the 80s. I still know all the words!
You should listen to Level 42 playing Mr Pink. It is an instrumental, but it will blow you away.
Mark King is the lead singer and the bass player. He is great at both.
This song is so dope! Great pick. Level 42 is my favourite British band! Great job guys!!!
This is one of those songs that never gets old...and if you liked this Lesson in Love is 🔥
Definitely a certified banger
From the same album, y'all should check out "World Machine" (the title cut). Lead singer Mark King does the funkiest bass solo ever on it.
Great song and remember my sister and her friend always listening to this song while laying out in the sun😁
Great song from a great band. Mark King can play that bass! He’s a bad man on that instrument.
To Be with you again - BANGER
There was a slightly longer version that really accentuated the bass, and they used to play it on the R&B station in St. Louis back in the day. Not sure if that happened elsewhere, but this was a huge record in STL, for everyone. It crossed a lot of genres, pop, R&B, college new wave rock, adult contemporary. Seemed like every station was playing this cut.
Loved these guys back in the day. They went from a kind of prog-funk to funk-pop to straight up pop sound. Their early stuff is great. The album after this their drummer and guitar player left because they didn't want to be in a pop band and they were never quite the same after that.
Love this song and their sound. Another great song of their's is Children Say.
This song is one of my favourites of all time Thank you for giving it recognition, 😮❤ I love the base and in my opinion Mark King is one of the best base guitarists
They're incredible live .....Love love love
Mark King is the lead singer and bass player. Sooo good!
My favorite of theirs is Lessons in Love. AMAZING bass by Mark King!
This was one of my favorite songs by this group.
One of my favourite bands in the Eighties, had all their albums, sheer class
This is a friggen jam
Boys, that bass!! All about that
You guys could react to the telephone book and I'd love it. I know, telephone books are pretty much a thing of the past, but you know what I mean. The three of you are so much fun to watch, love the info, love the banter, and love the broad range of music you bring to the channel. ❤
Excellent idea!
Huge in Britain at the time, they have MANY funky tunes.
Next, try their brilliant The Sun Goes Down,it’s funky as all hell, and Mark Kings bass is heavy man.
Superb band.
Also check out another of their songs called It’s Over. Such a deep break up song.
Banger from the 80s 👌
Song reminds me of my 80s childhood. The British are amazing since the psychedelic era.
I really enjoyed Level 42. They opened for Madonna when I went to see her Concert in Seattle years ago.❤ Stay safe
I think you'd love the live performance of their song Lessons in Love from the Prince's Trust Rock Gala in 1989!
You just gotta hear them live and watch Mark King slap that bass while singing and chewing gum!
This ringtone is on my iPhone 🙂
theres a R&B singer, Anthony David that did a BANGIN cover of this song
Yes ..level 42 ..loved this song ,back when i was young.😢
Loved this song when it came out. Still on my playlist today, one of probably only a handful of songs in that era. Just so listenable.
Fun song for summer bar-b-ques for sure! Completely forgot about this band, thanks for reminding me.
Watch then play live truly fantastic, bass player frontman something, but all great musicians.
This was, and still is my #1 pop song from the first time I heard it and saw the video at 5 years old. An irresistible riff, harmonies between bassist and lead vocalist Mark King ( who sings the verses) and keyboardist and second vocalist Mike Lindup (who handles the choruses in his heavenly falsetto).
I definitely agree that this tune needs to be appreciated more. It peaked in the top ten (#7 for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100) in late May and early June 1986, along with their second US hit "Lessons in Love" (#12) in 1987, but they disappeared from the US charts after that and mostly performed in their native UK, Holland, and Germany. Sadly, "Something About You" doesn't get mentioned with other '80s tunes like "Take on Me" and "Come on Eileen," but when reactors such as yourselves discover (or re-discover) it, you realize just how great it is.
You should definitely check out their early live instrumentals like "Mr. Pink," "43," and "The Pursuit of Accidents," as well as their early songs like "Love Games," "Weave your Spell," and "The Sun goes down (Living it Up).
80s classic for sure
There were so many groups from that time who had a similar sound. It's makes me think of Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me".
Awesome song. A timeless classic.
Love Level 42. Check out their many hits, especially Living it Up. You will love it too.
Thanks guys. Your enthusiasm is awesome! Those bass lines are sick.
They are and thank you for tuning in!
You should try “Your Love Games” from them. It’s an eargasm of instrumentation with a funky bass
brilliant
My fav pop 80s song. Ty IZ!!!!! ☘️ 🇺🇲
U are otw to listen to all my favourites from the 80s 🇧🇻😎🤗
It's soooo good!!!❤
I'm with OlliWooDDA, there must be something in that UK rain that imparts musical knowledge. Blame it on the rain, it explains UK music; it's an '80's pun; still a great song; it also makes me envious, because I live in Utah and never rains here anymore. Mystery solved, I'm going to bed. Excellent video. Thanks, guys.
So happy you guys loved it, it’s one of my favorites, the vocals, the funky bass line, just fantastic and fun.
JUST love the bass in this one!!!
LESSONS IN LOVE💕
Great song and band! I appreciated the reaction to this song!
Great review of a great song that I loved in the 80s and still do. Please review Trouble Man by Marvin Gaye. It will blow you away!
great tune
React to their song Lessons In Love please. They were the opening act for Madonna's 1987 Who's That Girl Tour and I that show. They and Madonna were great but the majority of the audience didn't cheer for this band because they were there to see Madonna. I saw that show in New Jersey on 8/9 the last U.S. date before her going to Europe. It started raining halfway through her show but she finished her show like the professional trooper that she is.
One of my favorite songs! Thanks guys! 😊😊
They have many good tracks.
this song brings so many memories back for me listen the radio as a kid this was special time and level 42 this so much respect the 80's if were'nt arround then you missed out with such great music.
I love this song! ❤
Really, really,REALLY had to see these dudes live to fully get it. Their singles didn't pull back the curtain at all on how bad ass they were when it came to just jamming out live.
Lead singer is the bass player and this was a superb group. Grown up music. Try out some of the rest of their catalogue. They’ve got some superb songs in there, some with more obvious bass/funk.
This bunch were the real deal. We had the best music…;-)
Mike Lindup of Level 42 recently released a great album, "Changes 2".
This song has a nice funky hook accentuated by that thumbed bass line. Some of the better music in the “new wave” genre had at least an undercurrent of R&B and funk running through it. More songs like that would be “One Thing Leads To Another” by The Fixx, “Once In A Lifetime” or “Burning Down The House” by the Talking Heads, “She Blinded Me With Science” or “Hyperactive” by Thomas Dolby, “Promises, Promises” by Naked Eyes, and “Come Back And Stay” by Paul Young. Not a complete list, by any stretch, but those are the ones I can recall right off the top of my head. And the GOAT, Prince, was a master at mixing new wavey synths and electric drums with some of the best funk of the 80’s. Great reaction!
You guys always get the like button! 👊🏻🤠🍻
Anything Level 42 from the The Pursuit Of Accidents album. IMO that was their best. Certainly takes me back to a time....
Loved this. It was a hit.
