  • In this video, reacting to reactors reacting takes a look at the greatest band to walk the earth, Level 42! World reaction to the hit song Something About You? Not as it should have been, #6 in the UK, #7 In the US. smh...
From wiki: "Something About You" is a single released by British band Level 42 in 1985, in advance of its inclusion on the album World Machine the same year. The song was written by Mark King, Mike Lindup, Phil Gould, Boon Gould, and Wally Badarou.
"Something About You" was released in several countries beyond the United Kingdom, including United States, Germany, Italy, Canada, and many countries of South America and Asia. It is the only Level 42 song to be a top 10 hit in the United States, where it reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it is their second top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, reaching #6 on the UK Singles Chart. The single was certified gold in Canada in 1986.
"Something About You" appears in many Level 42 collections: Level Best, The Very Best of Level 42, and The Definitive Collection.

I love how emotional you get to this song. I get that emotional too:) Here is a sweet memory I always think about when I hear this song: When I was about 17 this song was my favorite song. I was a fairly troubled, very emotional young person who was sent to counseling and institutionalized settings. I remember meeting a girl who was about 14 who, in our small group sessions seemed sooo withdrawn and angry and defensive towards the world. She always looked like she had been crying for hours when I would see her in the group. I naturally was drawn to her because I have a need to help people I see in distress (I'm a teacher today:). I did reach out to her and invited her to my family's Christmas party in 1994. I introduced her to my friends and she began to show real joy and happiness around us (we were all pretty wild and crazy punk rock kids:D She would laugh so hard she would cry from laughter, instead of pain and anger. She just needed to feel included with a group who knew how to have fun and act a little crazy and not let the world judge you too much. I introduced this Level 42 song to her and it became her favorite song in short order. At some point we did loose contact and I would still think about her from time to time. About two years later I ran into her in the paring lot of a convenience store. By this time she was a little older, driving, and had her car filled with a bunch of her friends. I stood at her driver's side door talking about all the good times we had a few years back, and then she says, "Wait a second, check this out!" She then hits the tape deck in her car and starts blasting 'Something about you' on full blast in the parking lot!! She told me, "I still love this song you introduced to me sooo much and always will!!" I was laughing so hard as we both yelled the lyrics in that parking lot, with her friends in the backseat of her car, apparently getting to hear it for the first time. She wasn't that angry, confused young teenager anymore. She was a passionate, vibrant young person who had a reason to sing out loud for the world to hear:) I never saw her again, as I went off to college soon after and left the state. I always think of that story when I hear this beautiful song:)

LOVE Level 42! My favourites are the early funky stuff "Hot Water" (mad intro), "Livin' it up", "The Chinese Way", and the beautiful "Leaving Me Now". Would love to hear your sweet, excited reactions to these, even if no one else does! More power to you for spreading the joy :0)

@@addickkelders2265 They're a nod to EWF. There was always been a mutual respect between the two bands. Actually Verdine White produced their 1983 album "Standing In The Light." An element Level 42 didn't have for years was a horn section. The double lead vocal thing with a male falsetto I understand also. Great songs from both, but they're not trying to be EWF. EWF has more Jazz (their horn section is among the best) and African elements than Level 42. I'm just grateful to have a band like this in this century.

Bro, Level 42 is why I play bass today! Seen them three times, been backstage twice, and on the bus once. Mark taught me his machine-gun triplets, and I got to learn them on HIS bass!!! Got a signed pic on my wall, and my nephew built me a doubleneck bass and guitar that is just covered in Level 42 references (all airbrushed by hand), it's a masterpiece! They're such nice guys, too. My all-time favorite band!

It was at their show at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, my car was blocking them in. The whole band is great, really nice people! ❤❤ The other major backstage encounter was at their show at The Palace in LA, Oct 1, 1987. My gf at the time, it was her birthday, and I stepped away to get us some drinks, made my way to the front, slipped Mark a note, and he recognized me, and after the next song, he announced that his friends from Orange County were in the house, and it was my gf's birthday. The look of utter shock on her face will never be forgotten! 😂 After the show, we went backstage, and Mike got us a split of champagne. She was totally blown away, and so happy..🎉..

BRO' - where were you when I was a lonely little Level 42 fan in 80s Philly? I had to find pen pals (in NYC and Colordao!) through the fan club just to find fellow fans, lol. Do you know how good it feels to see folks FINALLY discover this gem of a group? I NEVER got to see them live. That actually came to my neck of the woods back in 2018 I think and never knew they were long gone.
Actually if you want to see how lonely it was to be an L42 fan for ME, find one of the old fan club newsletters. I forget which one it was. It was during the Staring at the Sun era. There are three of us in New York City. I'm the chick in the pink shirt kneeling next to the TV. I want to see it was November 1988 or 89. But that was me, lol. You are SOOOOOOO lucky you got to see them live.
As for the revival, I think the fact that a couple of movies have placed Something About You on their soundtracks and the fact that there's a cover of Something About You out there by Anthony Hamilton is what's helping drive the rediscovery. If you haven't seen Hamilton's cover, check it out. Get the ACOUSTIC version, not the studio version. His studio version something manages to cover the song in treacle. I don't like it. But when it's just HIM and a guitar? Pure Gold. The beauty of the song shines right through and the lack of a bass line doesn't hurt the song at all.
In the acoustic version, you can hear the echoes of Stevie Wonder's style in that song. I'd never realized that influence before (although I agreed with critic Roger? Tannenbaum that Mark does occasionally have some of Wonder's lilt in his voice - a total plus for ME) until I heard Mike Lindup do an acoustic version on his own. He did quite well! But Hamilton's cover just emphasizes what fantastic SONGWRITERS these guys were/are.
By the way, if you DO get Hamilton's version, let me know if you think he's ad libbing that last part or if it was originally part of the song. I'm not sure and would love to know. I know a lot of folks don't know about the 2nd bridge to Something About You that only shows up on in concert (and I think on the Sisa remix...) but I always thought that second bridge was killer! If there's another verse we never got to hear, I'd love to know about.
All right, that's all I got. Good work, Bro'!!!! Loved this!

I just recently re-discovered this band and song. I think I was watching a movie or something on tv and heard this song playing in the background. Something clicked and I looked them up and watched this video (the extended version). I remembered the video from back in the day and loved this song back then. Such a terrific song and band! I was having some strong mid 80's memories wash over me. I can see why you love em so much!

I was about six or seven when this song was buzzing around the radio.
At the time, this song was what I imagined as the soundtrack to High School life.
Like you’re 15, 16, it’s the perfect summer afternoon, and this is what’s playing.
Looking back on it with older ears, it’s a perfect song. You can’t add or subtract anything to enhance it.
You have Mark King slapping those bass chords. The harmonies. The soul. The “let’s go” energy driving forward like a machine. And it still takes my head to that blue sky hot summer afternoon every time I hear it.

I first heard this song when I was 12 I think (so 1999), here in Brazil, didn't speak english at all and there was a tv commercial of a CD compilation (I think it was 4 discs) of "the greatest songs of the universe" and they made a sneak peek commercial of the songs in the compilation, and that's when I heard this song for the first time. It was such a small part of the song (just a few lines from the chorus) but I fell in love instantly, but I had no way to find out its name or the band's name, so i spent YEARS trying to find it out and rewatching the TV add... I don't remember when exactly I found out but now it has its pecial place in my "comforting music playlist".

i first discovered level 42 from this song maybe not even a year ago -- they're a few decades before my time. almost my favorite band at this point too!! i'm still hearing some of their songs for the first time... i only listened to world machine and running in the family for the longest time because i didn't believe they'd be able to top it all, and i didn't want to like them less haha! i'm listening to true colours, staring at the sun, and living in the light for the first time in the last few weeks. this song gave me the exact same reaction as jayvee here... 5 seconds in and "what is that bass?????" it STILL blows me away that i'd never heard of these guys in history books, honestly they're amazing. it's incredible seeing the emotions they inspire in you and it's wonderful hearing your stories about seeing them live and the impact they've had on your life. thank you so much for sharing! mark and mike are just absolute icons. I just learned this song on guitar, I just figured it out by ear and I couldn't believe how simple and straightforward it really was! You would never think... just two parts, the main part is just C, D, E, and the verse part is E, C#m, D, Bm and back to E. I think that was the trick to it being such a big hit. You can just strum basic cowboy chords and sing along. The deep musicality was all of the overlaying melodies, the moving bass line, the little high note synth bits and the interactive vocal melodies with that major to minor shift is pure genius. A bunch of catchy melodies all crammed into one song. At first I thought Mark King was playing through a bass synth unit like Pete Townshend's bassist on Give Blood, but I read that you are mostly hearing a Yamaha DX7 overdubbed on top of the bass guitar track. It sounds very similar to the bass on Stanley Clarke's Find Out album which also came out in '85... and there ain't nothin' wrong with that!
