    For all you guys complaining about the price - I agree! Everyone should do as I did when I first got into Tenkara-style fly fishing: buy a $30-50 rod from Cabela’s, pack it into a high mountain lake, and proceed to catch about five fish in 20 minutes. Of course, that fifth fish was a 10 inch Rainbow that broke the rod, so no more fishing for the remainder of the trip. In the years since, I’ve picked up 9 more Tenkara-style rods, and paid much, much more for each of them, and haven’t regretted the additional cost one bit (and have yet to break another rod, while taking larger fish, and enjoying greater castability and casting accuracy). As with most things, you get what you pay for.

    When I saw the title of this video, I was like, "oh no way! :) and an Idaho company, "oh no way :) !" and then the price "oh....no way :(

    We don't have alpine lakes over in my part of the country but these work great on small streams. I prefer fly fishing but if I have to pack light, there is almost no excuse not to have a tenkara rod. Only a few ounces.

    I get the ultralight nature of the tenkara rods but you can get fly reels that weigh almost nothing and open up a whole world of opportunity

    • @JonConti
      @JonConti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I own three fly reels 🙂 If you watch my Chalk Basin video my girlfriend took her rod and reel while I took my tenkara rod and guess who caught fish! I think the key phrase is “idiot proof.” Yes, if you use a rod and reel you could catch bigger fish. But mastering the full fly fishing setup is not easy. The cast is harder. More options is more to worry about. More parts that can malfunction while in the middle of no where. So I ditched the reel and am much happier worrying about less out there and catching more fish. Cheers! ✌️

    LOL, idiot proof way to go fishing says the guy who bear sprayed himself! LOL Sorry Jon, much respect, but I just could not resist! I fish Tenkara and love it for back country creek and lake fishing.

    Another great video Jon, thank you first of all. Any suggestions for fishing rods that don't cost that much? BTW...my son and I hiked your same hike just about in Hells Canyon, wonderful experience and amazing place. Those rock mountains were formed 300 million years ago, they were around during the dinosaurs!! Any suggestions on less expensive lite weight fish setups would be appreciated.

      @JonConti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s awesome man glad you got to do that with your son. In terms of fishing, a river guide once told me to ditch my tenkara rod and use a willow branch with line and string (Not joking). He showed me on the river, it does work 😂

    Those look like good lightweight setups. I don’t want to come off rude here with this question but I need to understand this.
    Would you not get the same flies further out with a fly rod and have more versatility?
    I get the ultralight backpacking concept as I practice it myself. However if I’m spending hiking hours fishing anyway then I might opt for a slightly heavier setup.
    I only backpack fish with a small spin cast so not an expert by any means.

    Have you used this setup on the Boise River?

    • @JonConti
      @JonConti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Briefly. I didn't have much success. I would use a traditional fly rod on the Boise, this thing isn't really made for that. This is more for small streams, creeks, ponds, and mountain lakes.

    Tenkara is NOT an idiot proof fishing style. I wouldn't recommend it for most folks due to the learning curve and limitations. Get yourself a 2, 3, or 4 piece spinning rod and reel and call it a day.
