Talked to a older Asian ex boat fisherman. Guy was using a folding box cutter for bait, line cutting etc… started up a convo about it. Said he had been using that style knife for decades. Easy to replace, always razor sharp, can withstand commercial fishing abuse , and doesn’t matter if lost or damaged . Can easily replace it. Very interesting approach, any thoughts? I might follow his lead.
I have a fanny pack with a Ronco Pocket fisherman with a tackle kit inside with all the goodies. It's really convenient not to have to dig gear out of my pack and know everything I need to fish is in the fanny pack
I use a Dock Demon kids' fishing rod with a small Ugly Stik spincast reel. Straps next to a pack real easy but it gives you a little something to cast with.
eagle claw colapsible rod with a spinning reel on it has caught alot of fish for me. I leave it in the truck with a tackle box similar to yours with hooks, sinkers, rooster tails bobbers and beetle spins. A little pack of trout magnets work well too. panfish love them as much as rainbows do.
I have been using Daiwas since the 80's and they have always been doing a great job. They are pretty affordable too. Really enjoy your fishing vids because it is pretty evident fishing brings out the kid in you. I know your time is pretty filled up, if you ever wonder what to do as far as youtube summer vids go for a fishing series. Your happiness during this activity is contagious.
I'm sitting here watching the part about hand lines and I remembered that I have the plastic tube casting that becomes the largest soft drink bottle (3 liter?). I don't know, but you may have inspired my hand fishing line kit. Now all I have to do is remember where I put the thing. Thanks Dave.
Daiwa mini is good but i prefer the dock runner ugly stik or the dock demon. Hand reels are great for portability ease but i have better luck with a rod with larger fish. A good dip net can also get you some lunch in a pinch. A makeshift minnow trap is an underappreciated food source, too. Last week fishing the grand river i pulled out my minnow trap baited with only a pinch of bread and hauled up a water snake, a few large creek chubs, 2 dozen minnows, and a crayfish. It made me pause and rethink survival food gathering for a moment lol Im also a big fan of trot lines when it comes to filling my belly. Float fishing is a close second. Spring poles too. Passive fishing is the way to go for survival, akin to trapping. A gig head or the makings of one is always a must carry for me as well. Justy two cents and a few extra nickels.
Dave, I have carried a pvc kit I made after watching one of your videos from years ago. I have carried it miles and miles, and I have had tons of fun fishing in very out of the way places. I have caught small and medium fish with it. I could have used it to survive if needed. Thanks for the good times and memories it made. Keep up your work brother!
I was so interested in everything you were saying tell you just all of a sudden went off without saying what you usually say. I have an old Zebco that I've had for 13 years since we moved here and that thing has been excellent I also bought my grandson a Zebco when he thought he was too old for his Spider-Man rod so I took his Spider-Man rod and made me a cat fishing rod out of it and honestly I don't know how many catfish I have caught on that thing I've lost count but when they are too big to reel in with that little rod then I grab that line and Pull It in by hand. The plastic one you said y'all used to sell I hope y'all do get those back I love that one. I saw Shawn one time he had a piece of cane pole and I like that so much till I made me one and it works pretty good it doesn't hang up and the reason for that is you have to smooth out that little rib that's on the cane and probably like the plastic one you used to sell the one I made out of a cane pole floats also. I wish I could find some of that large cane pole and I'll probably run across some at some point and I'll definitely get me some of that. That one that you showed that had a little pouch to go in that one was awesome also but I believe I like the one that you sell the best, besides the one I made of course. This is been a great video and you made a lot of sense, there's all kind of different ways to fish and all kind of different tackle to use. When I lived in Oregon I learned how to fly fish and I really did like that I just never did continue it when I came back. Anyway thanks for the video enjoy these kinds like this actually enjoy all you put out so on that note stay vigilant.
I have to agree with you. As being a fireman, you have to be a jack of all trades. EMS, extrication‘s for vehicles, building construction, plumbing, wiring,. I think being well-rounded is a good thing, as opposed to being a specialist at one specific thing, and not good at anything else. But! Having that one special skill set brings value to the team.
Years ago I was at Kmart & spotted a sale on a tackle box / telescopic rod / reel combo that my friend & I bought. A few months later he bought the same rod & reel opened for 50c. This became his camping rod & he caught some decent fish on camping trips.
Great video as an avid fishermen I really enjoyed all of Dave's fishing related videos and could verify his techniques And choice of equipment and tackle is spot on and would work well in most situations. Speaking from almost 40 years of experience. And in a survival situation would definitely feed u
I'm a fan of the Emmrod, I keep mine on my pack - really good for every kind of fishing I do here in Texas (Kayak, drop, creek, etc). I have a homemade energy drink tube kit that I've had for probably 15 years that has caught plenty of fish as well. Great stuff!
I've had my Diawa minispin for over 20 years, even caught a 10lb salmon on it. I also have the Ronco pocket fisherman that was my father's. Cheers Dave.
Two small spoon lure's that seem to work in every lake in Alberta and Saskatchewan is the five of diamonds and the red and white stripes. Leaders are must because pike hit like a small shark.
Thanks for the motivation Dave. I am dual sport motorcycle riding in perry state forest. Tarp , hammock and bluegill catch and cook. Awsome day. Thanks for opening my eyes to new ways to camp off of the motorcycle
Old school zebco 33. No rod needed. Mskes an awesome handline. Add a small eye hook or 3 in your kit if you HAVE to have a rod. Easy enough to lash it to a green branch, twist in the eye hooks for eyelets and youre off and fishing.
I am always impressed with people that can actually catch fish. I got all kinds of artificial lures. Natural bait including worms, catopa tree catapilers, crickets, grasshoppers, chicken entrails, stinkbait for catfish. Nibblet corn, cat food mixed with cornflakes, marshmellos, You name it, I tried it. Nothing works. Many times fished using the same bait others are using, just 10" away from where the hook lines are set. They get fish. I feed the fish. Same with hunting. All I see on the day of the hunt is mosquitoes. If anything is caught is some bluegill that is 3" long, mouth to tip of tail. Not even worth while to skin and clean. Fifteen minutes to get the dame aomunt of fish meat as a single peanut. I hope there will never be an apocalypse. I'll starve to death. When I go to my favorite fishing hole. I'll see fish jumping out of the water catching bugs. The moment I set out a fishing rod. It's complete silence. Thus the reason I don't fish and hunt anymore. I can be much more sussessful by going to Micky Dee's for a McFish sandwich, light on the tarter sauce. No cheese please. I quit that Frontier thing a long time ago.
Picked up a profishency bumblebee from Walmart last night. At 5'6 and being two piece it will make a decent pack rod. I'm gonna make a tube out of pocket for it. It will certainly handle fish as well, I have two channel cats soaking as we speak
I progressed from a cheap $15 amazon pen rod works great for panfish and up to 3lbs bass even caught a decent channel cat with it to a 4 piece ugly stick with a cheap $20 ice reel which works great for everything to a 4 piece browning travel rod with a cheap daiwa ice sized reel. I tend to keep a smaller tackle box than Dave had with various sized hooks up to 2/0 and some bank line and a spool of pline
I have a dock demon and I put a zebco omega 171 closed faced reel and threw the open face reel away cause it doesn't bird nest as often it will handle most of my fishing needs, I will suggest that you add a spoon to your fishing kit so you can scale the fish faster and easier and it won't cut the fish like a knife would, also there a TH-cam channel that has a video on trout line fishing with buckets instead of using hooks it's very interesting to see how it's done
Thats a nice fish. I went fishing prob 40-50 times in my life, and I only caught something bigger once. It was a 20lb carp, and I accidentally hooked his tail playing with a line and bare hook at the dock our dads were fishing. They netted it and made me take the pics of them holding it LOL. I had found a four leaf wood sorrel a few mins before and i thought if I ate it, I would have good luck. Not with fishing, but with anything in general. 9 yr old girls are whimsical types and I thought the wood sorrel was a four leaf clover. Neither, of course, give you any type of 'luck'.
I love Rooster Tails as well, caught many brown and rainbow trout with them. My all time favorite spinner bait is Mepps fly spinner baits, they sport a single barbed hook with a bumble bee fly tied to the hook.....brookies are suckers for them! Thanks for helping me make up my mind about the Ka-bar caster, I feel much more confident about putting it in my pack now! Thanx Dave.😎
I always carry a 6'0 daiwa presso travel rod and a 500 size reel fits in my bag and takes up little to no space, but ive recently taken up tenkara fishing and thats even more compact but is limited to flys
Wow. There is truth to how similar mindsets think alike. My fishing kit is shockingly similar to yours. I’ve spent many years tweaking and optimizing my kit to fish effectively and pack minimally and cost effectively. And my kit looks quite similar. $16 Walmart dock runner is not a bad pick either.
Im suprised no mention of the dock deamon/ ice runner rods.(same thing) Id say its the common man option at $9- $15 its super compact, strong, and sensitive. I carry the uglystick ice runner with a decent reel, nearly identical tackle selection. With the addition of a rebel cricket, a generic smaller bug type crankbait similar to the cricket and super small jigs 1/24-1/32oz. nothing heavier than 1/16oz.
I love rooster tails! but I've had better luck with panther Martins ONLY because you can get different weights of them, so sometimes you need a little heavier to cast further out further, or for better control or action river fishing around here alot the Columbia River way up North. They're both super similar lures and are my favorite, I have a few spoons I keep with me as well
I use a small rubbermaid case like the one you have with the green bottom.I always keep it stocked up with rooster.tails and my bass slayer the Touchdown worm. The Touchdown worm is probably my favorite ,I had to prove my fishing buds wrong when they said I couldn't catch smallmouth with it .We waded just about 3 miles upstream in the White River and smoked my fishing buds with a solid pumpkin seed TD worm.
I like the Cuban fishing reels, (thats what they are called in Florida). Its just a ring about 6 or 8 inches in diameter. You can grip them very well and can pull in some monster sized fish. It's mostly used for salt water, but if you use smaller line and tackle it works just fine for fresh water. Ive caught lots of bass and catfish on mine. I keep it in a small bag, the extra tackle stores in a coupleof little tins (Altoid tins) and nest in the middle of the reel inside the pouch.
Great video Dave! Fishing videos are always good. May I suggest trying an ice fishing spinning rod and reel to your arsenal. They range from 24 to 30 inches, ultra light to medium action, and the reels usually have a very good drag. A piece of PVC pipe of appropriate size and a couple of end caps keep them safe.
This gives me some idea's on what i could do with a 7" piece of either 1" or 1¹/⁴ pvc pipe and 2 caps. I was going to say glue 1 cap and not the other... but then again, if both caps were removable you could dump the goodies out and slide it over a stick and have a reel. Drill a hole on one end (where the cap will fully cover) to jam a stick into and you have a crank. Put some little pieces of trap wire and bankline inside and you could make a working pole anywhere.
I am with you on the Rooster Tail! Black or brown my go to choice. For a small packable kit I usually have several Rooster Tails, a Kastmaster style spoon and a Rebel floating minnow. I do have a telescopic rod I like coupled with a push button Zebco to throw in my motorcycle saddle bag, has served me well. Will have to try one of your hand casting kits!
The wacky worm set-up will catch fish in any still water situation. Hand line, stick line, dock demon, ultralight, any rubber worm with a little hook right in the middle
Rooter Tails & Beetle Spins are my two most favorite lures. Tip. Tip your Rooter Tails with a 2"Gulp minnow or shad. Deadly combo. I transfer a dozen or so intoa small pill bottle, which fits nicely in to any pocket. They give a tad more weight for casting ultralight lures and give you smell attraction. I've had great luck with them. I also tip my spoons and plugs. They also add a bit more action to the presentation.
Great vid! Yeah I miss the Water's Edge Series! I love inline spinners, but my go to are Mepps spinners! Fishing line is key and can be used for other bushcraft type things as well. Pathfinder Tenkara rod on the horizon? Oh heck yeah I hope so!
We used to fish the overgrown creeks with children's rods, you know, the ones made by zebco with mickey mouse or Donald duck on them. We just carried hooks and split shot and would dig worms or catch grasshoppers or minnows, and we would bring home 60 or 80 brem and bass and warmouth. We would cut palmetto fronds with We long stems for stringers. We would run the stem through the gills and push the stem into the mud at the bank to keep the fish fresh and in the water.
Took me a few seconds to figure out what kind of image was tattooed on Dave’s neck. I knew it was a familiar outline but I couldn’t put my finger on it, until it hit me… Otzi the ice man!! Makes for a fitting tattoo considering who’s neck it’s displayed on.
Good stuff! I keep tending to carry less and less when I go fishing. I currently use a helikon tex chest rig and one rod. My go to is Senkos and flukes, those two lures give you a lot of options.
I like to include a few Beetle Spins and some Poppers like you'd use on a fly rod in my Emergency/Opportunistic Fishing kit. Crappie Nibbles are good to have also if you put them into a smaller jar. IMO
A small mesh bag and a cheap nylon rope stringer won't take up much room or weigh much, but will do an amazing job of keeping your fish alive and fresh in whatever waterway you're catching them in. Just tie the stringer onto the draw string, put your fish in, pull down the draw string with a spring lock on it and toss the bag into some water of reasonable depth. Porto-Livewell!!
I might follow his lead.
out-fishing someone next to you with a hand-line while they rocking a expensive rod reel set up is just great
I really like these fishing vids. It’s a nice change up. Would love to see more of them! As always, very informative Mr. Canterbury.
I have a fanny pack with a Ronco Pocket fisherman with a tackle kit inside with all the goodies. It's really convenient not to have to dig gear out of my pack and know everything I need to fish is in the fanny pack
Had one for years that I got at a yard sale for next to nothing. It absolutely catches fish!

I like a dock fishing pole...small, heavy duty, and my favorite one to use.
Those dock demons ain’t bad with a decent reel
Ugly Stik has a 4 piece rod with a bag for about $50. I like it for canoe / kayak camping
Dave, I have carried a pvc kit I made after watching one of your videos from years ago. I have carried it miles and miles, and I have had tons of fun fishing in very out of the way places. SRO and the Pathfinder School make life AWESOME!
Love seeing the different packable options! Great video!
Made a few wooden hobo reels as gifts and hopefully soon I plan on testing out a 3D printed design I found. Printed bobbers too

Love love love tenkara fishing I have 4 in different lengths . It's very easy I even have my client from the group home where I work doing it .
Old school Zebco 33 and 2 pc rod gets it done for me . Thanks for all you do for me my family friends and associates .

Would love to see a video/s of you on a day of fishing. Showing the knots, tactics, etc. long time fan!
Cheers mate for sharing. Love the minimalist kit. Thanks DC.!

Ice fishing rod if your looking for small and compact to fit in your kit might be a good option.
Just had a couple walleye fried up along with some french fries! Its been over 30 years.😋
This is one video many of us here have wanted to see. Thanks Dave!!
Love fishing..... It is definitely part of my plan if things go bad for a while.......
Talk about timing! I've just spent the last few days sorting my bug out fishing kit and this comes up in my new feed this morning 😂

Just bought a Daggerfish a couple of weeks ago and I love it.
Thanks brother, I just ordered an Ugly Stick pack rod spinning combo today from Walmart. Your video reminded me that I sorely needed it.
I have a m rod in a spinning set up , never used it lol . I’m now inspired. Also have the kabar hand reel, used it plenty in rivers with no luck
Absolutely love the small fishing kits. Portable and fun!
Those little Cubby Grub mini mites you see at gas stations work good for crappie and bluegill, worked under a plastic float.
Thanks for the motivation Dave. I am dual sport motorcycle riding in perry state forest. Tarp , hammock and bluegill catch and cook. Awsome day. Thanks for opening my eyes to new ways to camp off of the motorcycle
Perfect video for this time of year. Hopefully it gets people outside and fishing again. Skillet
Old school zebco 33. No rod needed. Mskes an awesome handline. Add a small eye hook or 3 in your kit if you HAVE to have a rod. Easy enough to lash it to a green branch, twist in the eye hooks for eyelets and youre off and fishing.

I like that tube set up ! curr I carry a ice pile and small reel fits on the side of my pack ml great videos !!!
I love to fish crickhoppers on an ultralight spinner. Excellent for panfish and bass.
Gotta love the minispins,...I still use one that was given to me as a gift.(circa '85). It has a hard plastic case, and is my favorite pack-rod.
Picked up a profishency bumblebee from Walmart last night. At 5'6 and being two piece it will make a decent pack rod. I'm gonna make a tube out of pocket for it. It will certainly handle fish as well, I have two channel cats soaking as we speak

I tend to keep a smaller tackle box than Dave had with various sized hooks up to 2/0 and some bank line and a spool of pline
Like those micro rod and reel kits. Handy as I don't have a truck or car.
Collapsable rods work great too. Ive caught 3kg plus on them. And they are my daily gear. Love the video as always.
you forgot the Ron Popeil pocket fisherman LOL. greatest fishing kit. still have mine from the '70s...LOL great video Dave
youve come out with some really awesome vids recently. Thanks Dave.
I live on the gulf coast of Texas, and I've caught quite a few decent fish with a simple dock demon rod that's 30" and
Thats a nice fish. I went fishing prob 40-50 times in my life, and I only caught something bigger once. Thank you for posting this video
Heck yeah brother if you're ever out Northern Arizona man I would love to meet you your my hero been watching you since I was 16
Been fishing since mid fifties stick string and hook it still works 😴🏡🤔
I always carry a 6'0 daiwa presso travel rod and a 500 size reel fits in my bag and takes up little to no space, but ive recently taken up tenkara fishing and thats even more compact but is limited to flys
Wow. There is truth to how similar mindsets think alike. My fishing kit is shockingly similar to yours. I’ve spent many years tweaking and optimizing my kit to fish effectively and pack minimally and cost effectively. And my kit looks quite similar.
$16 Walmart dock runner is not a bad pick either.
Rooster Tails are THE Ohio lure! 1/6th oz. yellow was my favorite for creek fishing. It caught everthing.
Cool video. I need to carry a fishing rod with me. I do carry an emergency fishing kit.
They're both super similar lures and are my favorite, I have a few spoons I keep with me as well
I love my St Croix rods.
I have a couple of the "Dock Demon" rods from Walmart and they work great .
I am more a fisherman than anything else. Love the minimalists aspect of this video.
I personally think the collapsible rod and reel system is the best. Low energy exspense for easy to catch tasty protein.
They're typically cheap also.
Hey Dave ya forgot the popile pocket fisherman..iv still got mine almost 50 years now..
🙋🏽♂️🎣 Good tips. Been awhile since I have gone fishing. Need to get out there this Summer.
Rooster tails, Beetle spins, Marabou jigs and vibes are all good "go to" lures to use.
A heavy rubber and around the small tackle box is a good idea. Lesson learned.
Put some little pieces of trap wire and bankline inside and you could make a working pole anywhere.
first hand line be nice glow in dark plastic. the last one i see cork with lanyard being lost if cork works loose and you cast it out. nice video
Dave, a lot of good info in this video..ty
I love these fishing videos Dave!
I like to pack an ice fishing rig. It's smaller so it can be packed easier than all but a hand line rig.
I have a little dock demon spinning rod and I’ve caught some decent size northern pike and bass on it already.
We would cut palmetto fronds with
We long stems for stringers. We would run the stem through the gills and push the stem into the mud at the bank to keep the fish fresh and in the water.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Creeping on that 1 million subscribers. Congrats Dave, let's get you that million
Took me a few seconds to figure out what kind of image was tattooed on Dave’s neck. I knew it was a familiar outline but I couldn’t put my finger on it, until it hit me… Otzi the ice man!! Makes for a fitting tattoo considering who’s neck it’s displayed on.
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
Even the toughest will chuckle when panfishing!
Penn rods telescoping are prettt good
Good stuff! I keep tending to carry less and less when I go fishing. I currently use a helikon tex chest rig and one rod. My go to is Senkos and flukes, those two lures give you a lot of options.
I have a cheap little telescopic pole and spinning reel that do pretty good for pan fish and 3pound bass or so.
Digging the otzi outline on your neck!
I like to include a few Beetle Spins and some Poppers like you'd use on a fly rod in my Emergency/Opportunistic Fishing kit. Crappie Nibbles are good to have also if you put them into a smaller jar. IMO
I still like the two foot cheap pole you can get from Walmart for about ten bucks, I ditched the junk reel for a better one, keep it in my truck.
Nice panfish bro
I still have two fishing kits i bought from pathfinder years ago.
Fishing with Dave 👍
Crazy timing, I’m putting a kit together now.
