I'm brand new to "upgrading/servicing etc" a few weeks ago I spoke to someone at Sheffield Decathlon who worked at the bikeshop and he information bombed me when I was looking for a new suntour crankset as my pedal had fell off and couldn't find any online as I thought I needed the exact same one, he explained so many options and showed me examples of what people used for trail riding and the huge cassettes which I didn't know was a thing etc. So when i got home i researched.. alot. My voodoo hoodoo was a 3x9 shimano alivio groupset but now i run a 1x11s (11-51t) deore m5100 groupset, 32teeth 175mm crankset using a bb52 bottom bracket, a 150mm dropper seat I internally routed by drilling my frame once, new brake pads and I bled my own brakes and fitted the groupset.. I also replaced my freehub as that had massive play. I replaced both bearings and bearing cups in my headset along with the crown race and opted for new sealed bearings and better cups.. isn't the Internet a wonderful place for newbies like me to do everything! Last month I thought a bike was a bike. Now I feel like I know so much! Haha. Hardest part was the rear derailleur adjustment BUT I recently bought a bike stand for £30 and it took me 1 try to dial it in today, having to either flip the bike over or lift the bike to pedal it to adjust a derailleur is so hard as a newbie. Thanks for reading, I felt like sharing haha.
Very detailed video! Thank you for this.. been using that 5100 crank for about a couple of years now without issues. Was planning to upgrade to the 7100 slx cranks but keep my 11spd 5100rd and m8000 shifter. Didn't realize that slx 12 spd chainring might have problems if I used it with the 11spd rd/cogs.
Got myself a FC-M4100-2, it's a regular chain line out of the box. Sold the 36/26 chainrings, replaced with narrow-wide. Works great and it's a bargain.
Great pickup about old 135mm and 142mm through axle non-boost chainlines. I've found the cheapest option for a correct chainline, is to find an old 3x (NOT 2x) shimano crank from the 9 speed or 10 speed days with 104BCD. Then install a wolftooth etc narrow/wide chainring on the middle mount. This gives a perfect 49mm chainline. You can buy both 10/11 or 12 speed chainring options in alloy and steel from wolftooth or others.
Running 5100 on my 1 X Shimano 105 commuter mtb. Irish coas here, so didn't want hollow tech as possible failure due to water ingress over time. Weight penalty is minimal. Running a 36t TA Specialties chainring. Very solid.
I've been running Shimano M5100 groupset for about 1 year now. No problems. Just wish Shimano did not abandon non-boost chain lines. I was able to reduce chain line from 52mm to 49.5mm by swapping one 2.5mm bb spacer to non-drive side. I have also used chainring spacers with longer 16mm chainring bolts to reduce chain line. I recently purchased SRAM SX DUB crankset for another budget build that I plan to pair with M5100 cassette/Derailleur. Honestly the SRAM SX DUB crank is little lighter than the M5100 crank, has direct mount chainring and offered in chainrings offsets for non-boost (49mm) and boost (52mm). Seems like SRAM did their homework with the DUB system. Hopefully the 28.99 aluminum spindle holds up as well as Shimano's 24mm steel spindle.
I have the 5100 cranks on my 1x conversion. Was actually available at the time and a bit cheaper. No problems with 141 boost using the BB spacer/s. I used MT800 BB as preferred black to grey. Sunrace 11-51 cassette, but also have a Shimano 5100 to try with second wheel. Thinking 34 tooth front for more on road downhill speed too.
I am testing a 5100 cassette on my 2018 Trance with an SLX 11 speed drive just to get that better 51 tooth climbing gear, and so far I like it. Just a bit more weight in specs but I really only notice the better climbing and not the weight at all.
Starting from SLX Shimano provides stainless steel bolts in many of their parts, which is another bonus when spending bit more. Especially as you do need to service cranks, thus using crank arm bolts on regular basis. Same goes in rear derailleur, where small allen key needs nice, u corroded allen head, not to strip it. Although adjustment doesn't require much torque
Engineering and materials science does not lie. I like an all steel 11 speed rear cluster and front chainring or chainrings they last very well. The great thing about the M5100 is it was designed for a single and double front chainring. The M5100 rear derailleur has jockey wheels that can be upgraded to XTR bearing jockey wheels and also has a clutch. The latest Deore equipment has all bases covered for reliable long lasting performance.... The move to 12 speed has not been well liked by many people for good reason. The 10 to 51 rear cluster holds no interest for me. Once you start using exotic and light weight materials and make things thinner and much lighter the life of the drivetrain is reduced which is okay if you replace parts all the time. But for the normal rider a half a kg weight reduction in not relavent but a reliable long life is.....

My 5100 crank arm fell off my brand new bike after 2 weeks of use. I got it on and re tightened. Looked like no damage to the splines. I'm just hoping whoever assembled my bike just did it wrong and it's not a sign of things to come.

Can I put a 40t chainring on the m5100 crank? Thank you
@@LoveMTB 40t chainrings do exist that has the same bcd as the m5100 crank but that its not a shimano chainring, so my question is can I put a 40t chainring on the m5100 crank? Will it hit the crank arm since its big?
@@LoveMTB oh right the i meant the frame chainstay😅 so will it rub with a 40t chainring om a m5100 crank? Or will it depend on the frame
I wish they'd include a pants protector around the teeth. Why not?
@@LoveMTB most people are not serious mountain bikers. 99.9% of mountain bike use is by people commuting or traveling on roads or dirt paths. And many people ride their bikes in very cold winters.
@@LoveMTB I see. Well, I don't argue with you, but it still seems stupid 🙂 it would cost nothing, weigh nothing, and it avoids the hassles of using those Velcro straps to bind your pants legs. Thank you for your reply 👍
También existe una biela idéntica a la m5100, denominada mt511-12v.
Casi idéntico. Éste es parte de la serie M6100 de 12 velocidades, el M5100 es de 11 velocidades. Por lo demás probablemente idéntico menos los elementos gráficos.
There are a lot of excellent Chinese cranks in the SLX weight class for about $50. I can't see spending the same for such an anchor.
Light, Strong, Cheap. Pick any two.
M5100 crank compatible with 12 cogs?
Probably not relevant for you anymore, but yes, with 3rd party chain rings. I'm running a 1x12 using an M5100 and 36T chain ring. 36T because it's an older frame with uses 26" wheels and M5100 because I needed the ability to modify the chain line to fit the older 135mm QR frame width.
Se puede pasar de 3×7 a 1 × 10 o 11 v
175mm is pretty long for a crank arm. I'm a 165mm kind of guy. Wish shimano offered cranks down to 160mm.
I was just about to get it lol
@@LoveMTB Thanks for the tip about the chain line. Gonna get it
Hi, thanks for this video, very helpful. I was actually looking to replace my 32t chainring on my Shimano Deore 10 speed to a 30t to make it a little easier going up techie hills. Do you have any recommendations on budget friendly but good chainrings that are compatible?
Are the Shimano 12s cranks really not compatible with non-boost frames?
Or are there other shimano-compatible direct mount chainrings available with the correct Chainline?
Heavy chain heavy ring 😢 expensive 😔 easy to rush 😭
5100 is not that expensive!? PLus it is discontinued, CUES is taking ovev
thanks i am thinking i will upgrade my super old 26 mountain bike from 9 speed to 1x11 or 1x10 but with current availability i dont know what to choose ... maybe even 12 speed non boost crank so i can reuse it later in life :D but thanks for videos they are very insightfull
@@LoveMTB thanks i will check that for sure
