    Dolly is the real deal. I saw her at her one-night-only show at Radio City Music Hall a few years ago. Literally everybody who was anybody was there: Jane Fonda, Isaac Mizrahi, Rupaul, Loretta Lynn, Anna Wintour, et al. She has fans of all stripes everywhere.

    Dolly handled Merv’s vulgar questions well. But nothing beats the way Dolly put that condescending Barbara Walters in her place during an interview! lol

    Thank you. Being a lifelong Dolly fan, it was great to see this for the first time. I've never seen Dolly so uncomfortable with an interviewer. The chemistry wasn't there - and she knew it. She held her own though. That's how professional she was and still is. She knew what she had to do, and what she'd have to encounter to get her brand out there. Too bad she had to endure a guy like this.

    • @scottlevine7646
      @scottlevine7646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree in every way. She’s colder than pure gold. This was a terrible fit, whereas Carson was better able to get away with the boob jokes bc he obviously loved her.

    • @mthivier
      @mthivier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@scottlevine7646 Yes, and during Dolly's very first interview with Carson, he seemed to sense how nervous she was (you could see it on-camera), and he made a specific point of making her feel comfortable and welcomed, so that the interview would go smoothy. (That's why he was always regarded as the very best at what he did, and why Dolly always spoke so fondly of him through the years.) Merv, on the other hand, just comes off as smarmy and creepy. A few years later, I think Dolly would have found a classy, gracious way to throw his tackiness right back at him, but here, she still seems a bit overwhelmed by the splashy "showbiz" atmosphere, as it was all new to her, and she was more focused on that. Even Gloria Swanson seemed to be getting a bit annoyed with Merv.

    Dolly is so sweet and classy here and even decades later in her '70s now she is still a class act helping so many others what an absolute treasure! And OMG Gloria Swanson - born 1899 so she was at least 80 here and looking fabulous, one of the most celebrated actresses of the silent film era and reinvented herself in 1950's movie "Sunset Boulevard" - she was an icon before icons were even invented! To be watching this in 1980 was fantastic!

      Indubitably ! She mentioned in her 1980 autobiography ("Swanson on Swanson) that a doctor turned her onto a healthier way of eating way back in the 50s (plenty of fruits & vegetables, little or no refined flour or refined sugar, etc). She practiced healthy eating & fitness for the rest of her life. And it showed !

    • @frayjr1970
      @frayjr1970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She also had plenty of healthy facelifts starting in the 1920s when she was Joe Kennedy’s kept actress. One before “Sunset Boulevard.” Please don’t take this as criticism because I do not judge; and I think you should be able to do whatever you want within the law to make yourself about yourself. After all, happy people make a happier world.

    I was no big fan of the late Merv Griffin. But would watch his show if he had a guest that interested me. My big thrill from this episode is watching that late great Lee Remick. So beautiful & so talented ! She left us much too soon. She was in the original Broadway run of the thriller "Wait Until Dark" (Audrey Hepburn did the role in the 1967 film version). And she did a wonderful job in the 1964 Broadway musical "Anyone Can Whistle". Her version of the title tune can be heard here at TH-cam. Absolutely exquisite ! Thank you VERY much for sharing with us ! CHEERS !! :-)

    Merv Griffin was the most obnoxious talk show host ever. He asks questions that he should never ask, he talks over his guests after he asks a question and calls elderly women he isn't familiar with by their first name.

    That dress causes more trouble, I don't understand why to anything, so I just watch tv whim senile wondering why there's no food in the fridge with her labels on it....

    The host is constantly interrupting the guests in vintage interviews it seems like… some worse than others. This guy is pretty bad. It’s so frustrating on behalf of the guests
