- I don't particularly care for Donahue, especially his seemingly "holier than thou" attitude during this interview, but this is a great interview that covers so many aspects of Dolly's life. This is the first of two videos. Be sure to check out both for the full interview! =)
I love that she is who she is; she makes no apologies and she owns it! She can indulge herself in silly things one minute, and she is generous and humble in the next, or at the same time.
I love this woman! I could have the worst day and after listening to Dolly speak, an instant smile comes on my face!

It's always about her looks. But we all know there is much more beneath the physical beauty. Male interviewers reveal their focus often. But, Dolly always bypasses their male attention and shows her intelligence, integrity, honesty and pride in who she is and where she comes from. She is in complete control of any derogatory intentions from women and men.
Oh if you think Phil Donahue is shovenistic towards Dolly check out an old interview with Barbara Walters when Dolly was young. Anyone else that didn't have Dolly's grace & heart would have walked out it was disgusting.

One of the many, many things I love about her is she’s not afraid to make fun of herself or laugh at herself! She usually beats them to the punch line… she knows people often joke about her looks, but has said many times, there’s a heart beneath the boobs and a brain under the hair. She’s even made jokes about modeling her iconic look after the town tramp where she grew up!
She is striking. As she said, she likes and welcomes the attention, in a respectful manner.
It’s so rude to ask questions about her boobs, hair, weight loss, her overall “trashy” look (she doesn’t look trashy)....it’s just not nice.
It may seem that way at first, but she doesn’t get offended. She’s so graceful and gracious about it. I’m sure she thinks if her answer to those questions can help anyone else feel more comfortable or see an inquiry like that in her same light, she’s glad she could help. What a lovely soul she is.

Amazing her business savvy smarts and she never had to go to college. Washed her clothes in the motel sinks and they were wrinkle free material, to save money she said. One of the greatest musicians to ever live

Donahue is really condescending, and a fair number of his questions didn't age well (all those comments about her weight!!!), but Dolly is the same delightful, kind, self-possessed role model she is now, 30 years later.

Other than tennis shoes for a little exercise, yes she does. Her house slippers have somewhat of a heel as well. They’re not just for beauty. She’s short and lives in a regular height world. That world includes her own kitchen cupboards. Plus she says she’s worn them for so long, her legs hurt if she’s in a flat shoe for very long.

17:50 Phil talks like Americans traveling around America instead of going to Europe is something new and some sort of tragedy. "You have to feel sad about the cause of this". Unemployment was really high in 92 and 93. I was 30 years old at the time and the only people that I ever knew that traveled to Europe, anyway, were very wealthy people and the upper middle class folks. Some schools would have a "Senior Trip" that would go to Europe, but mostly they went to places like New York, Orlando or out to California. It just bugged me that Donahue thinks taking a trip to Virginia or Tennessee is essentially slumming. LOL
Right every interview is about her weight. Goodness gracious not everyone is pencil thin.

I grew up in Tennessee. I am 66 and watched Dolly all my life. She is self made which makes her true in my book. Such a talent. Love Dolly.

Dolly is very intelligent. Don't be dismayed by her Smokey Mountain simpleness. One can grow up poor, but still have intelligence. She has made 500 million & controls her empire. @@melh.5752 Because Dolly was not accepted well early in her career. Dolly went against what was accepted in our culture like Marilyn Monroe. Sex appeal wasn't promoted and Dolly was in Play Boy. They thought she was a tramp, hussy, prostitute like. Look at the difference today in audiences.
