Just replaced the laser on my SCPH 30004 R Model. I winged it and just did the laser swap, no flashing and to my surprise it worked instantly. Didn't even have to adjust anything. It was a KHS 400c. Thanks for the tutorial!
Can't stress enough how much of a difference the drive height adjustment can make; Can make a difference of the drive being able to boot only PS1 discs or both PS1 and PS2 as well as how fast it manages to do so. Along with how much or little noise it makes. In my experience there's a sweet spot where it's fast, reliable and rather quiet. The KHS-400C (Chinese knock-off) however seems to be pretty noisy no matter what.
@@filevans Very easy to adjust. It's just a relatively small cog that you can turn clockwise or counter-clockwise. Problem is it's time consuming depending on how much you're comfortable with stripping the drive down while testing.
Dang wish I had seen this comment before I tried to adjust the potentiometer on my 400B drive that was only reading PS1 discs. Now it reads no discs, hasn't for months. I just put a 400C in it today. I didn't understand why it wasn't reading anything before watching this video. Had no idea you had to flash new firmware for different model lasers in these things.
Ok, so I stumbled on this channel randomly while looking up some mods to do. I love that we do the same mods, and even listen to the same music while doing them, but THIS VIDEO right here did me in. This was fantastic. Flashing the laser worked first try no issues. I already subbed before this but if I hadn't, I would now. And I'm stingy with my subs. Keep it up!
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the feedback and I’m glad that this technique of flashing the laser worked for you as well! Before I knew this method I used to really hate working on the original PS2 models because getting the new laser to work was always a crapshoot. Now my success rate is somewhere like 80 to 90% with this method
Dude thank you thank you thank you. I ordered the KHS400B laser since I have a SCPH-30001 model. I haven’t played this since Grand Theft Auto Vice City (my youngest brother played it for thousands of hours and the laser broke). I found the PS2 collecting dust so I took it apart and with your video, it works like new again. I sincerely appreciate you giving your advice to help fix these. May I suggest to make it easier for you and others, to unscrew the screws safely you’ll need a PH1 and PH000 for the backside and lid for the disc reader. That tiny screw on top of the laser was removed with a Torx T4. Thanks again for your help!
Thanks so much! I’m glad that the video helped you to repair your PS2 and thanks for the details about the screwdrivers. It’s great when you can bring these old consoles back to life and enjoy some classic games!
I noticed when you opened the drive top I could see the laser cable looked worn, as if hit by the spinning disc over and over. Yet supposedly only the slims had that problem. I just bought a used slim from eBay and have already scratched one disc. That truly sucks. Not quite sure what to do. I used to have a fat model, but it was stolen. So I was going to give my PS2 games to my grandson along with a decent console. But I hate to think of ruining all my old pristine games. I wish there was a sure inexpensive fix. Thanks for your video 👍👍
Tranks for this vid!! I wanted to repair MY Ps2 from a time where i was prob. 8 i didnt wanted a new one. Ididnt had to Flash it on the SCPH-50004 with the HD7 Laser. Now i can Play Jak and daxter and get nostalgie ❤️
actually there is an option in the PS2 settings on the version menu called diagnosis that will let your system automatically adjust the height of the laser to read the disc
I bought a refurbished PS2 with brand new lens (this exact one 400C) and my biggest issue is, if the disc is even slightly used specifically with Jak 1, 2 and 3. They all have issues before the main menu. Unless the disc is spotless from a new case, they don't want to work, yet in my 2002 Stock console from childhood, and an untouched PS2 slim, no issues. These lasers are either not as good as the stock versions or an adjustment didn't go right.
I did a 400B -> 400C swap on the day1 ps2 model and it worked great with no mods. Nice and quiet. Also did a fan-mod. IT required some manual cuts into the back(obvious square cut where the grate is), but fit great after
I would not be surprised that all the KHS-400C laser lens modules you will find on ebay and other Ecommerce websites are all made in Shenzhen, China. Any major electronics company who have outsourced their manufacturing to China were most likely based and manufactured in Shenzhen due to its close proximity to Hong Kong given that it is a Special Administrative Region with access to foreign trade. Since Sony no longer supports the PS2, I would not be surprised if the Chinese Manufacturing firm that Sony outsourced its PS2 production to is still making them given how popular the PS2 was which is good news for us Retro Gamers.
I have a 20 year old SCPH-30004R of my childhood, one of the most unreliable about laser. I bought the original Sony new old stock KHS400C, and tried for 3 days to adjust the screws for calibration. There was no way to get satisfactory results. I was able to achieve perfect reading of single layer DVD5 games, or dual layer DVD9 games, both were impossible. The height of the laser for the two types of discs is totally opposite, higher for single layers and much much lower for dual layers, with no meeting point. At this point i think there is some other problem on the motherboard, or with some laser controller, i don't know. Now i think i'll take a model with a more reliable laser.
Very nice & informative video ... Many thanks for sharing, man ... I have an 30004R PS2, which is one of my fav consoles. Although the laser lens still works, someday it will need to be replaced. A couple of questions, if i may (my PS2 is "chipped", BTW, if it makes any difference): A) Does your method make calibrating the new laser unnecessary? Or i misunderstood? Because calibrating those suckers is a major PITA, plus needs special equipment e.t.c. B) If the original Laser fails, can anyone take the unit to a specialist, together with the chinese replacement lens, in order to "copy" the calibration parameters of the original lens to the replacement? Or the replacement unit needs to be calibrated onboard the console? Anyways, thanks in advance & sorry if i asked anything stupid above XD ... Cheers
When I swapped the old sensor for the new one I forgot to move the screw on the front to the new one. I ran the lens changer on the FMCB memory card and it would read CD only and it was really really slow. DVD games would error. I took it apart again and realized the previously mentioned screw I missed and after that it read CDs instantly but still not DVDs. I ran the lens changer again and I adjusted the top right screw on the rail and after a few extremely minor turns to adjust height of the lens, it read a DVD game and instantly too. So now it’s fully restored. So for those having issues please just hook it up to a tv with the lid off and just keep making minor adjustments and of course be sure to have lens changer or else it won’t work at all
@@ethanwashoe5868 Make sure the screws on your rails are tight, and the one that I turned 10 times or so was the little black screw on the left side of the laser if you’re looking at it from the front. I tightened it all the way at first and from there I just did quarter turns backwards and tested it until it worked perfectly
@@jeremy9474after following your advice and tightening that black screw to the right right of the laser then unscrewing it a little at a time my ps2 is now reading all the disks. Thank you man, I was about to give up on it
My lens ribbon connector broke/ripped off when I was replacing the battery on the board (SCPH-50001). Ordered another lens and it'll get a rewrite on the EEPROM to accept the lens (original is HD7, which is hard to find, the one I ordered is a Sony KHS-400C for the 50001 model, which is better than nothing). And when I try to use it, it doesn't read the discs and I entered the correct menu to change it.
What laser do you recommend I use? I hear many PSone lasers are cheap and don’t work very well, so I’d like to know what laser replacements you recommend for the PS2. Also, you know where I can get a new tray for a 50000 series system? Part of mine is broken off!
Awesome video! Quick question, what kind of screwdriver do you use when removing the top of the drive? Was starting to open my PS2 and got stumped as I don't seem to have the correct size for those screws.
Thanks for you video! I have a question, does your method also work for other PS2 fat models? Because when you change the EEPROM, I can see that the program says "SCPH-30001", so I am wondering if it only works for this specific model. I have a "SCPH-50006", I wonder if it works for my model.
I have been doing a lot of research on the eeprom because I have seen ps2 eeprom chips get corrupted in different forums. It seems the 50000 models are the ones I've seen with the corruption issue as well. What's interesting is it uses a different version of the eeprom chip called the "dragon". It has the same settings programmed, though, so I'm not sure where the issue lies. One of the tips he pointed out in this video is to save the lenschanger app onto your fmcb memory card before backing up the eeprom settings. This way, you don't mix it up with another consoles settings in case you are repairing multiple systems. I'd like to know more about the risks involved when rewriting the eeprom.
Got a "fat" SCPH-30001 that takes like 2 minutes to read the disc, I tried cleaning the laser but it did nothing. So I'm guessing I need to replace the laser. My main questions are: 1. I have a really old soldering iron, from like the 1950s/1960s. It's so old it says "60 cycles" instead of "60Hz". Will this iron work? 2. Also, when I had my PS2 apart, I adjusted the laser height gear (the white gear) and I'm not sure if I have it 100% in it's original factory position now. But I believe it's 99.99% near the original position (if it's off at all it's properly just a notch off). If I'm not in the original position, can this cause any problems?
For question one it is hard to say, but I would be more inclined to get a new temperature controlled soldering station. There is one made by a company called KSGER on Amazon and it is very good and also affordable. 2. Regarding the gears, I think it is OK even if it is not in 100% the original position. The laser has a range of tolerance so even if you are off by a little bit it should still have no trouble with reading
Hi, I have a question, what laser would you recommend for a SCPH-30001 R model? And is the homebrew program absolutely necessary for this process? Sorry I am not tech savvy at all
I’ve upgraded to the 400c in my fat ps2. However with the new laser it only reads music CDs, ps1 games and 5 of 30 of my ps2 DVD games and no Movie DVD. I’m thinking could it be the screw on the underside left one above where the solder is removed of the laser that needs turning clockwise a fraction? This according to another TH-camr adjusts the strength of the laser that reads DVD. Left one DVD laser strength, right one CD laser strength. Or is it just to do with that Lens changer needs running on it? That bit haven’t done yet as haven’t got MacBoot on a ps2 memory card.
My original laser works, it reads DVDs, PS1 games, but only certain PS2 games. I say certain PS2 games, because it reads all of them… some play just fine, but most of them just freeze or stutter so bad. Is it best to just replace the laser? Do you think it’s because some disks are in better condition? I have cleaned the existing laser, and the rest of the console. Is it possible to just to re-flash an original laser to see if that may help re-calibrate it?
Hey I have tried your method on two fat PS2s. Bought a new 400c laser, installed lens changer and it still wont read games. I tried adjusting the black screw on the laser and the white wheel on the back of the disc tray to no avail. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Nevermind. I tried a different laser 400B, flashed it to 400B EEPROM and now the console works. Thank you!
@@LIRetroGaming Turned out it stopped working again not long after I edited my comment. So far I tried multiple new lasers 400B and 400C. How many consoles has this worked on for you? So far I'm 0 for 2. So now I'm looking into a program called PlayStation Mechacon Adjustment Program (PMAP) that has even more settings at calibrating PS2 lasers.
I tried to boot lenschanger and it seemingly crashed right as it popped up. I'm using an scph 30001 with a replacement 400b laser, though the actual lens doesn't move up or down.
L.I Retro thank you for the video on this. I have been having an issue getting the lens Changer file to run on mcboot. i have followed the steps you provided and when i get to the run portion and hit O the screen on the TV goes black and nothing runs. have you ran into this?
Alright so I replaced the laser on my SCPH-30001 R (I ended up ordering an KHS-400B, not 400C). With the old laser, it would take like 2 minutes to read DVDs, would read CDs just fine. I flashed the EEPROM using lenschanger, and it notice it made an improvement, but it still takes like like 10 to 20 seconds to read a DVD disc. Like it will go to the browser screen, and not automatically start the game.
It is not part of the software that comes with free Mcboot, so you have to use the flash drive to transfer it over to your memory card. But once that is done you don’t need the flash drive anymore
Bought a different laser, took the playstation apart and the power ribbon was removed on accident. Watched a video on how to open it up to plug the cable back in, did it, put everything back together just for the replacement laser to not work.
i believe the whte thing you took of is the only problem w my laser it doesn't grasp that bar as yours does it just slides over the swirling bar on the far right(the worm screw) also stopped reading blue ps2 disc maybe the last part if video will help?
Got it, sometimes the white bars have difficulty attaching to the work screw. You can purchase replacements and that may help. Or you can use lithium grease on the worm screw so that the laser moves more smoothly
Always got the red screen of death for my god of war. Always that specific game (no other game) I have no idea why but hopefully this answers my problem
Make sure its from your region Meaning if you from europe and you have a japanese or north american game it will give you the red screen If its not that then the game is fucked get a new god of war
Hi i just bought a ps2 fat 30004 series, but unfortunately the lens doesn t go up and down and the spiner goes slowly and stops,if i change lens is there possibility to fix the problem?
Hi, does anyone know a Brand-Model to recommend for INTERNAL FAN replacement for PS2 FAT? I know the FAN for PS2 FAT must be 60x60x15mm, 7V powered with a 2Pin connector (7v and 2pin is not so common)..
I recently bought a replacement laser and it appears that it has soldering covering at the back, should this be removed? I’m unsure if it can stay. If so, how would you recommend removing it? Thx
Followed this and PS2 plays DVD disc fine. No PS1 games however play( just shows ready disc) and I don't have blue disc to try. Any advice for PS1 games?
The inside of my ps2 looks different to the one in the video. The laser doesn’t have the Sony “box” around it and the metal part on the left has a rectangle in the middle rather then the lines running through it. It’s driving me nuts one minute it was working and now it’s reading discs but won’t run the games. Or I get “disc read error”. How do I know what laser will work for my ps2? Really don’t wanna get a new one this was my first console.
The replacement you used in this video isn't a Chinese knock off, that's a new old stock Sony part. There are still thousands of them in circulation as Sony was still repairing these systems until 2018. There are Chinese knock offs, but they almost always have a yellow ring around the lens and are very distinctly a reproduction of the original part with many visual differences.
I wish it were that easy to tell the difference between a Chinese knock off. My original 50001, that had never been touched before, has the same yellow ring around the lens - looks identical to the replacement I ordered. My 30001 has an older laser like the one in this video. To use the newer laser in that model, you need to use LensChanger to flash the appropriate firmware to the drive.
@@simbin. Most original KHS-400Cs will have a yellow ring around the lens, which is why Chinese knock offs share the same color. For the final production run of KHS-400C pickups, Sony used a white ring around the lens, and this is not something I have seen on a knock off part; all white-ringed 400Cs are genuine. There are some new old stock yellow-ringed 400Cs as well, but they are far less common in my experience. Most original KHS-400Bs had a white ring around their lens, but Sony began to produce them with yellow rings after they began producing 400Cs. These newer 400Bs are what you will find on the market today and have a different objective lens. You should not replace a 400B with a 400C as the change in height of the flex cable connector can cause the cable to grind against the top of the drive. For most systems, LensChanger is obsolete. PMAP is a far better tool as it allows you to flash the system with proper calibration data from Sony service centers, including the newer type of 400Bs.
Can someone please help me... I just bought the laser, installed it. And I didnt knew that I had to change sth with the Software. I put in a DVD game. And it dient worked. A CD game worked...... now where do I get the Software from for the memory card? And did I messed up the laser or is it still working?
Hi do i have boot up the laser len with the ps2 fat model because i replace the laser len and i haven't boot it up it was working well but it didn't last long forever
Hey thanks a lot for this video! I’m trying to fix my SCPH-30001R that originally came with (I think) the KHS-400R. Right now, the worm screw does not move for me at all. The laser comes on, the disc spins, and the screen shows “loading disc” indefinitely (never get a read error message, just stays on “loading disc”). Does this sound like it needs a new laser assembly? Or might it actually be the worm screw motor that needs replacing? I’ve bought a McBoot memory card from China that I’m waiting on to get here just in case I need to replace the laser
So if I understand correctly, the laser doesn’t move up and down along the track? It spins but the laser stays in place? You can try adjusting the small black screw on the laser - if this screw is too tight then the laser can’t move on the rails. It might be the worm screw but it’s fairly uncommon for those to fail
@Long Island Retro Gaming Yea not only did the laser not move at all, but looking at the worm screw when I inserted a disc, the worm screw itself was not moving at all. This repair actually became a lot more complicated on me last night unfortunately. Somehow in my repair efforts, the eject button and entire ejection mechanism stopped working on me altogether all of a sudden. In googling the issue, I found out that it could be a blown fuse. When more fully disassembling the PS2 to get to the motherboard to take a look, I noticed that the worm screw ribbon cable was disconnected. It's possible that I disconnected it accidentally during disassembly, but I'm thinking more likely it was already disconnected, and that would explain the behavior I was seeing. No idea how that could have happened though, it's super strange. Anyway, so now I can't test because of this new issue lol. It turns out that the PS11 fuse on my v5 board was indeed blown, so now I've got to solder a replacement for that component, reassemble the PS2 making sure all ribbon cables are reconnected properly, and hopefully it will finally be working! But it'll be a while before I can test that theory while I wait for this replacement component to take the slow journey over here from China.
Hi, I do not understand the Laser Software Installation. How can I geht Homebrew on My Memory Card? Where can I find the Software? Is it only a folder on My usb? Thanks for Your help!
were does the back promp file for the laser were is that saved? Also what the best grease to buy for the ps2 burner that will not harms the plastic or metal?
My fat ps2 just went last night. Sucks. Just wont turn on. Walked by last night while it was off and the red light was off. Checked the power button on back. The one with the line and circle on it. (Yeah im not tech savvy) i think the line is on position. Anyway. I tried multiple tvs. Doesnt work. I ended up just ordering another. But what could it have possibly been? Btw im on long island. Whete r u guys located in case i need a console repaired. Thanks
Thank you very much for the walkthrough, it's very helpful. I did all this but forgot about the little black screw, and the lubrication of the rails. Speaking of that, better to use a very small bit of paper towel and spin it into a sort of point, then dip that in the lithium grease and apply carefully with that. Those plastic cue tips are a no go in the present and future, because they end up either in landfill or the Oceans. Bloody vile 🤮
I have a 300001R ps2 fat, with a 400c laser that stopped reading discs completely, I just picked up a new 400c laser from eBay and it would read discs after saying "reading disc" for almost 2 minutes.. played with the white gear and got it to run blue ps2 discs instantly but no other discs that fast. Would flashing the EEPROM be worth it or just keep messing with the gears???
I did this, but I might have messed up the desoldering. What is wrong if the laser is making a electric humming noise, like an electric scratching noise?
@@LIRetroGaming yes it did move up and down. It was making an electrical buzzing sound. And re-installed the original laser and that one is working just as it did before, only reading CDs and moving normally. I think I messed up the de-soldering. Used to much heat and pressure and I think I damaged the board when I was trying to remove the soldering point. I ordered a new laser and some desoldering braid, I read up on soldering and apparently it's not so easy, it's important to have the correct heat setting not above 370 degrees celcius and to use a desolder braid in between of the correct size, apply some heat on it the heat transfers down through melts the point and the point is absorbed by the braid, also should not keep the soldering iron for to long over the board so not to damage it. Anyway, gonna try again with a new laser, and also might install a harddrive to play games from if I'm unable to fix the laser. Do you have any advice for the soldering?
You most likely have a 400B laser. You’d have to flash the EEPROM with the Lens Changer program to get the 400C to work. That being said, the 400Cs are known to be more reliable than the 400Bs 😎👍🏻 30001R is a GREAT board revision too, they last for sure, with a 400C and the reprogramming, you should be good for years to come!
Do you think I need to replace mine? All games wouldnt read, then I cleaned the laser and nor have no issues EXCEPT that nfs underground literally takes 10min to get to the home screen
Hi, I just followed your tutorial and replaced old 400b on 400c laser and it works but its loading games really really slow, is there a way to improve it ?
Okay, so I replaced the laser. Went smooth until I turned the console on and put in a disc. It won't even read it. As I should mention it before, I bought a 400C as it is originally in my console. I did not install the MCBoot (because I am waiting for a second memory card). I loaded up GTA:VC and it won't boot, won't even flash a "Reading Disc" or something. As I took a closer look by opening it up, it will spin the disc for a half a second only to stop, and then the PS2 menu loads. Is it a problem that I haven't loaded the Lens Changer and properly set it up, or it is something worse?
Mine reads okay but when you hit eject it pops the tray out and about a second later it pulls it back in. I wonder if the slides need to be lubricated?
Hi I have an australian pal silver ps2 model number scph-50002 how do i figure out what laser i need i already looked inside it looks like a khs 400b though so do I use a khs 400b or 400c your video confused me a little sorry
ok not so confused now just watched the part that confused me again but can I just buy a 400b and not use mcboot? or am I wrong in thinking it needs a 400b in the first place? sorry to be a nub!
No worries, I can try to explain better. Basically the technique I described in this video lets you use the KHS 400C in your PS2 instead of whatever type was originally there. So in your case, you can buy a 400 C and it will work in your system with this method
The 400 C is cheaper to purchase and much easier to find than the other versions, and normally with this method I can simply install the new laser and be ready to go. Flashing the firmware somehow improves compatibility with the replacement lasers that are available on the market today
Bro i have a problem with my ps 2 fat 50000, my ps2 can't read gta sa games and all open world game, but my ps 2 can read games like racing, football, fighting and other, can you help me find the problem in my ps 2,please
Can I ask a question, I changed it as you did in the video but for some reason it plays some games and some not, what have I messed up that it not works? Thank you
Which games specifically are not working? You need to test all three disc types. If it’s one type of disc like blue discs then it’s just an issue with the CD
How important is it to change the lens firmware? I found a site that suggests the older models are compatible with 400C with no mention of doing any updates to firmware
I’m trying to do this any whenever I go to paste into boot the option is not highlighted. I purchased a free mcboot memory card on eBay if that makes a difference.
Yea freemcboot lets you play from USB sticks best to use a 32GB or larger ps2 games take alot of space Cutscenes are slow so skip them Gameplay is fine
HELP! I think I screwed up my install. I have a DTL-H30001 PS2 TEST/debugger unit. Its laser wasn’t dead, just noisy and slow and I replaced it. Now it tracks on its bars and says disc read error. I tried putting the old laser back = same error. I think I screwed up the factory calibration screws that adjust the laser. Advice? (This thing won’t run FreeMCboot on a memory card either, sighhhhh)
What do you mean by tracking on its bars? It sounds like the black screw which adjust the height on the left-hand side might be off. I have also never tried this on a test debug unit either
@@LIRetroGaming So, on closer inspection it is not spinning up a disc at all. The laser moves toward the spindle and will sit at the position closest to the spindle and move up and down, closer and further from the disk. It will not slide back toward the outer edge of the disk. It can't. There's a PCB board that it runs into rather than passing over. I noticed this when I was testing the snake motor. Originally, it had a 400B laser, replaced with another 400B laser. I think it is the position of the bars that is the primary problem.
UPDATE: I pulled the replacement laser out and put the original one back in. Looks like the replacement 400B I bought on AliExpress is faulty. I see red light, laser is moving in full range of motion on its track, but no signs of life in the spindle motor at all. I removed and re-seated all the cables to the spindle motor. Still stumped.
@@LIRetroGaming What I mean is that, if you move the laser carriage as far to the "edge" as you can (furthest position away from the spindle motor), and then power the machine on, the laser carriage will move down its bars towards the spindle motor and stop as close to the motor as it can. Then the laser will move up and down as though it is trying to focus and find something. The spindle motor will not spin the disk at all, it will not even twitch when the PS2 is powered up. Sadly, I can't swap the whole optical unit out of it, unless I had another one from another TEST unit. Their connectivity to the main board is different than that of a normal PS2: a TEST unit has two ribbon cables into the main board (I assume it is separating its CD from its DVD data), where the PS2 retail unit only has one. I done screwed up!
Help me out with 390001 will the laser work? Because mine idk if its the small nut that adjusts the hight of the laser and when i put the game it semi spins like a second then stops but i notice the laser does turns on so what it could be? I dont want to another ps2 if this works just good for me
@@LIRetroGaming THANKS TO YOUR VID . it was the nut that adjusts the hight of the laser but also i had to lubricate the rails . Now im happy im able to play cds . And i was this close to buy another one
@@LIRetroGaming Also I like how you showed that gear when dealing with one kind of disc loads but not another. My ps2 loads ps2 disc but not ps1 disk. It makes the loud grinding noise only with ps1 disc. Would that gear be the case? Or maybe it just need a replacement plastic arm and lubricant?
@@LIRetroGaming Hi, I ordered a replacement laser and installed it. Once i powered up the ps2 the laser doesn't do anything. I don't know how to install the program on the memory card. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks
I need some help. I did everything in the video properly (no adjustments made though...) And my PS2 works, but takes a while to read discs. But it always does.
What kind of soldering kit do you need? What heat? What do you mean remove the homebrew stuff? What if you have a mod chip installed in your ps2 will the flashing of eprom mess up your mod chip? Wait do you need a special memory card? I dont get it. The other guy says that the ps2 has to be compatible with a certain special memory card. According to that other guy you need to buy a free mac boot memory card from Ebay! So it's not just the laser you need to get for this replacement. Why didnt you mention that?!
I tried to explain this but I will try to give you some more details. I used a free mcboot card to load up a custom program called lenschanger to flash a new eeprom onto the ps2. The easiest way to get free mcboot is to purchase a card on eBay, and from there you can download lenschanger (link in the video description) and follow along from there
@@LIRetroGaming thanx yeah I did order a free mcboot card from Ebay. But one question, does flashing the eprom affect any mod chip that might be installed in the ps2?
why do you take the program from the usb stick and transfer it to a memory card. why not just install it from the usb stick. I'm very confused with how you did what you did
I have read that the program runs very stable if you execute it from the memory card, so that’s why I transferred it from the USB stick to the memory card. So far I have fixed several PS2 systems with that card and I have not run into any issues
Just replaced the laser on my SCPH 30004 R Model. I winged it and just did the laser swap, no flashing and to my surprise it worked instantly. Didn't even have to adjust anything. It was a KHS 400c. Thanks for the tutorial!
I've literally been putting this off for 15 years. Laser ordered. Thanks!
I had a 400B in mine, which I tried to replace with another 400B and it was so noisy I thought it was broken! That's why I tried to replace it!
This comment saved my PS2 fat, wasn't reading ps2 games randomly, after a quick cleaning and minor drive height adjustments, shes back in action!

Awesome! Glad to hear that the video helped!
I've finally got my ps2 fixed thank you so much bro
Live saver mannn, thanks so much for the knowledge, all i had to do was remove the solder bulb thanks.
IT required some manual cuts into the back(obvious square cut where the grate is), but fit great after
Holy FCK, YOU ARE MY HERO! I didnt know about the matching the EEPROM.
Need a tutorial for the sweet spot of the lasers black skew, would be really helpful
Now I can fix my ps2 thanks
Awesome, great job man!
Thanks, hope this video is helpful!
Cheers
Yes, you should not need to do any additional calibration to the laser. After doing this you can just drop it in and it should work
When I swapped the old sensor for the new one I forgot to move the screw on the front to the new one. So for those having issues please just hook it up to a tv with the lid off and just keep making minor adjustments and of course be sure to have lens changer or else it won’t work at all
Mine is readying cd slow but not dvd I really hope I can find the sweet spot cause I am beyond frustrated
@@ethanwashoe5868 Make sure the screws on your rails are tight, and the one that I turned 10 times or so was the little black screw on the left side of the laser if you’re looking at it from the front. Thank you so much mate. Totally worked.
Thank you so much for this video.
Awesome video! Quick question, what kind of screwdriver do you use when removing the top of the drive? Was starting to open my PS2 and got stumped as I don't seem to have the correct size for those screws.
Thanks! I use a Phillips screwdriver to take apart the ps2. The bit size is PH2, if that helps!
@@LIRetroGaming Thank you so much! This helped me know what I needed!
hey man, I'm having problems with launching lenschanger. What version of the software are you using?
I’m pretty sure 1.3. I left the link in the description of this video
Thanks for you video! I have a question, does your method also work for other PS2 fat models? Because when you change the EEPROM, I can see that the program says "SCPH-30001", so I am wondering if it only works for this specific model. I have a "SCPH-50006", I wonder if it works for my model.
Unfortunately I have not been able to make this work with the 50000 series ps2s
@@LIRetroGaming That's sad 😐. Now i know why my brand new KHS-400C is not reading disks. I got a 5000X as well
I have been doing a lot of research on the eeprom because I have seen ps2 eeprom chips get corrupted in different forums.
My main questions are:
Thank you!
Awesome, glad you got it working!

You can try adjusting the angle of the laser assembly as that sometimes improves the situation
So if i have a memory card with homebrew on it do i still need the flash drive with it on it? Or can i use the memory card by itself?
Because i bought a memory card with the latest mcfree homebrew on it. Do i have to install lenschanger on it or is it part of the mcfree software?
It is not part of the software that comes with free Mcboot, so you have to use the flash drive to transfer it over to your memory card. But once that is done you don’t need the flash drive anymore
@@LIRetroGaming ok so once i do that transfer going forward i will only require the memory card? If so awesome

That’s definitely good to know. I was really quite certain that these parts no longer existed but I’m glad that they do
I wish it were that easy to tell the difference between a Chinese knock off.

Oof that’s a more challenging repair but it seems like you are on the right path to getting it working again!

Would flashing the EEPROM be worth it or just keep messing with the gears???
flashed the eprom and still not reading ps2 games or dvds
I did this, but I might have messed up the desoldering.
What is wrong if the laser is making a electric humming noise, like an electric scratching noise?
Maybe it is not attached correctly to the worm screw that moves it up and down? Does the laser move up and down the rail?
Yeah that is definitely not normal. Without seeing it it’s really hard to say for sure what happened but it does sound like the new laser is messed up

You most likely have a 400B laser. You’d have to flash the EEPROM with the Lens Changer program to get the 400C to work. As I took a closer look by opening it up, it will spin the disc for a half a second only to stop, and then the PS2 menu loads. Is it a problem that I haven't loaded the Lens Changer and properly set it up, or it is something worse?
It’s not working because you haven’t tried using the lens changer program
@@LIRetroGaming great news then! My new memory card is on its way so I'll be able to play again. Thanks!
Mine reads okay but when you hit eject it pops the tray out and about a second later it pulls it back in. I wonder if the slides need to be lubricated?
It probably needs a new rubber belt for the tray
Oh, are those easy to replace? Available anymore?
Flashing the firmware somehow improves compatibility with the replacement lasers that are available on the market today
ok well I guess 400c it is lol
Where can I get a laser where I don’t have to clean up any sawter??
Bro i have a problem with my ps 2 fat 50000, my ps2 can't read gta sa games and all open world game, but my ps 2 can read games like racing, football, fighting and other, can you help me find the problem in my ps 2,please
That sounds more like an issue with your games than with the system. Did you test the games in other systems?
I've been try the cd on my friend's ps2, and the cd's running, but not on my ps2,sorry i'm not good at speaking english,i'm indonesian people
Can someone please tell me which of the 2 POTS is for the CD/PS1 laser?
Do you need to have a hard drive to program the laser or can you do it strait from the usb and mcboot card?
Just from the usb stick and the mcboot card. No hard drive needed
Do you have to boot discs from free mcboot? its not working for me
my ps2 laser works but it just takes so long to start up the game, if i replace the laser will it speed up the load times?
Most likely. That sounds like the original laser is starting to fail
The scph 300001 had two long screws and 8 short screws
I’m trying to do this any whenever I go to paste into boot the option is not highlighted. I purchased a free mcboot memory card on eBay if that makes a difference.
Yea freemcboot lets you play from USB sticks best to use a 32GB or larger ps2 games take alot of space
Cutscenes are slow so skip them
Gameplay is fine
I dont want to another ps2 if this works just good for me
It could be the height, but it’s really hard to diagnose without it in front of me
@@LIRetroGaming THANKS TO YOUR VID . it was the nut that adjusts the hight of the laser but also i had to lubricate the rails . Now im happy im able to play cds . And i was this close to buy another one
Do you actually need to do the whole homebrew software step? Or can it be skipped?
I have learned that the homebrew step is pretty mandatory. The new lasers just don’t work without it
@@LIRetroGaming Also I like how you showed that gear when dealing with one kind of disc loads but not another.
My ps2 loads ps2 disc but not ps1 disk. It makes the loud grinding noise only with ps1 disc. Would that gear be the case? Or maybe it just need a replacement plastic arm and lubricant?
@@LIRetroGaming Hi, I'm stupid. How do I get the program on the memory card?
@@LIRetroGaming Hi, I ordered a replacement laser and installed it. Once i powered up the ps2 the laser doesn't do anything. I don't know how to install the program on the memory card. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks
😆 it worked iam fixing so much ps2 from this :) geting my lasers cheap to ^^
Glad to hear it. There are way too many broken PS2’s out there
I need some help. I did everything in the video properly (no adjustments made though...) And my PS2 works, but takes a while to read discs. But it always does.
I have the same problem with mine. You replaced the laser and still lags?
@@wanderingdaze7018 yea, I haven't tried adjusting mine yet but I want to try to in the next couple months maybe. Not sure when I can get to it.
I just tried it now my tray closes and opens on its own lol
@@wanderingdaze7018 I've not had that happen yet...
I have a ps2 slim can I just use the laser on that to my fat ps2? And my fat model is 35001 will the laser in the description work on it?
No, the lasers on the fat and slim are completely different unfortunately
@@LIRetroGaming ok thanks but will the one in the description work for my model?
