Im a reseller who loves to buy video games and consoles at yard sales. But was also getting fed up with buying ones that ended up not working. Back then I would just toss them if they didnt work. I had no experience on how to work on this stuff, but thanks to guys like yourself who provide videos I got the courage to learn how to fix these older consoles and have saved a lot of consoles I would normally toss back then. PS1, PS2, PS3, NES, SNES, Gamecube, Xbox, Wii etc. I didnt even realize how fun it was to not only figure out how to open up the console and know how things work, but to replace the part and see it work. So exciting and the sanctification. Heck, this morning a Wii nunchuk was not working properly, broke down the controller and cleaned it up and now works great.
That's awesome! This is why I do the videos I do. Every day there are less and less of them and if we can save them, we can continue on these consoles history and share them with our kids and grandkids. And it really is a fun hobby to boot. Like you said, so satisfying to see something broken and see it working again.
I know this is an old video but I was hoping for some expert advice.. I have a 30001R that I've owned since it was new. It was sitting for many years collecting dust and I decided to dig it up for nostalgia sake. Wouldn't turn on, replaced some power supply caps and it fired up today for the first time in 20 years. It is displaying an odd behavior with the disc drive. When you put a disc in, it makes two click sounds...then a pause... then two click sounds....then a pause... all while the disc is still spinning It does this over and over, before the disc stops spinning all together. But here's the weird part: if you leave it alone long enough, the disc will randomly start spinning and the game will start up just fine. The only reason I found out is because I left it running while I was searching google LOL. After the clicks and the disc stops spinning, it takes about 45-60 seconds of waiting and then it starts spinning again and plays the game normally. So far I have cleaned the disc, cleaned the laser lens, and adjusted the pots on the laser. I just ordered a new laser but it's coming from China so it will be awhile. Have you ever experienced anything like this, or have any advice on what would cause such an odd behavior? Subscribed and liked, thanks!
Thanks for the like and subscribe! Good thing right now about me being a smaller creator is I can keep up with comments on old videos :) Your issue how you describe it, no. I've never had it start spinning the disc again. Normally it runs through a cycle of reading the disc and I'll get the infamous "Disc Read Error" or sometimes a red screen that says to insert a PlayStation disc. The general symptoms you describe though, yes. All the time. What those clicks are is the laser lens moving up and down trying to focus on the disc. So the laser I would say based on what you describe is the issue. Especially since it is the 30001R model which I run into laser issues all the time. But the starting back up again has me stumped lol. Though when I get a 30001R in with a laser issue I may try to duplicate your issue. Cleaning the disc and laser are good areas to start. Adjusting the pots I don't do anymore. I've never had it work. To properly do it you need an oscilloscope. And even then with the parts availability and how cheap the lasers are, it's just easier to replace the laser. Here's another thing you can try while waiting for the laser. When you boot up your PS2, on the main screen, hit triangle. You'll see the information about the console (like model number and whatnot). On console, hit triangle again and you'll see an option for "Diagnosis". Turn that on. Then go to the Browser and put the disc in and see what happens. If it works you'll have to do that every time you boot. According to forums back in the day, it makes it focus the laser beam better. Don't know if that's what it actually does. I just remember having mixed success with it on my 30001 20some years ago until it completely gave out :) Hope this all helps!
Yes as you can tell by the side of the DVD drive it's next to the DVD drive instead of having to strip the whole PS2 apart to get to the clock battery.
Those are the best. Normally that's what I look for in lots. Disc read errors with the warranty sticker intact. In pretty much every instance I've had, I replace the laser and it's good to go! That and I search for jammed disc drives too since you can usually fix them with a good clean.
If you find a 39001 model with the seal intact it more than likely just needs a cleaning to start reading disc's again....noisy fans, but bulletproof model
The basics will be pretty much the same. Obviously the disassembly process will be different lol. The only thing to keep in mind is the ribbon cable to the laser is taped to the bottom of the drive. When it's removed you have to make sure it's still taped down. If you don't it can scratch a disc. Ask how I know that XD And just remember there will be an antistatic solder ball on a new laser that you have to remove. You got this!
Basically, you'll want to just match up your laser model number that's printed on the old one to the replacement. I usually try to buy mine on Amazon. Mostly because of the easy return policy. I've had a couple duds before and it's nice to just return a dud without hassle. Otherwise I've bought parts on eBay and AliExpress before but only for harder to find parts.
Hello I replaced my laser but it doesn’t read discs still and I tried adjusting the height and still nothing and I don’t know what else to try got any suggestions?
Did you remove the solder ball? All PS2 lasers have one that needs to be removed. Also did you transfer over the black guide screw that goes on the laser on the left side? If that's not on there the laser angle won't be right. I've forgotten to put that back on once and it didn't read discs until I realized it and put it on, then it worked fine.
Every time I've attempted a pot adjustment, the ohms were different. Lasers are calibrated at the factory (or should be lol) so there will be variation in that value. If you are attempting to change the resistance on the CD or DVD pots, take that measurement before messing around.

I see my laser flash one time but i don't see it have a constant beam when trying to read a disc.
Is this 35001 model one of those models that has the clock battery next to the DVD drive too?
Yes as you can tell by the side of the DVD drive it's next to the DVD drive instead of having to strip the whole PS2 apart to get to the clock battery.
And i thought i was bad using an ice cube tray didn't think of an egg carton
😂 Reduce reuse recycle my friend! Though with the cost of eggs I won't be adding a new egg carton for a good while lol.
i love that people will sell these dirt cheap when they dont read discs. i just got a 30001 for $10 and the warranty stickers intact!

Just bought two 39001. One reads dvd and fmv seems choppy and the other ps2 has loud dvd drive noise and doesn’t read.
Nice 👏👏 im going to do the same with my ps2 slim 9000 series i hope this works.

@@titanrepairsthanks man apreciate the comment 👍
Can you link which laser part you ordered? I have the same ps2 35001 that needs new laser
Where do you find the replacement parts?
Im trying to replace the laser in mine but i dont know where to find the new part.

What was the ohms to the laser cd and dvd

750-950 for DVD
800-1000 for CD
