Needs a little introduction for your guest(s), then everyone who's never heard of Doug Drexler wouldn't have to go to wikipedia to read: _In 1992 Drexler made a career change by moving over to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as designer, digital artist and effects artist. He continued in that capacity on the subsequent Star Trek films as well as Star Trek: Voyager. In April 2001 Drexler worked as senior Illustrator and CGI designer on the fifth Star Trek series, Enterprise. Following Enterprise, Doug was hired by renowned Visual Effects Supervisor Gary Hutzel as CG Supervisor on Battlestar Galactica, "Caprica", "Blood and Chrome", and "Defiance". Doug won two Emmy Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award for Galactica._
It's nice to see people involved in the show who are actual fans of the show. To be sure, each one does only his own small part and has little influence on the entire production, and some collaborations are magic while others suck, but guys like Drexler on the team strive to maintain excellence and consistency in ways which make a real difference.
A lot of fun guys! Thanks for this episode! I love the NX Refit, wish she would have made an onscreen appearance, but it's nice to see the community keeping the fire burning!
I so wish Enterprise had a season 5. Or at least a series of made-for-TV movies or miniseries that wrapped up the Enterprise story. Something sort of like what Babylon 5 or Alien Nation did. Would have been nice to see the NX01 refit in action, and the Earth-Romulan war.
The Earth-Romulan War is a topic too overlooked in official canon. All those things between Archer's pursuit towards the Xindi and Kirk's 5-year-mission.
I could watch an entire series set during the Romulan war and early formation of the federation. The books had a cool idea with the early Federation members arguing whether the major point of Starfleet or maybe even the Federation itself should be more Pacifistic or some sort of mutual defense pack; basically UN vs. NATO.
A couple years' worth of watching Samuel play with the Eaglemoss models sold me on it, and the one I got was the NX refit, and holy hell is it gorgeous.
The most memorable thing about STE was when Comdr. Tucker was talking about how working with the ship's engine shaved years off his life. It made it seem more realistic and showed that this tech wasn't something to mess around with.
This is so awesome and heartbreaking at the same time. It is so unfair that Enterprise was cancelled just as it found its stride, I absolutely love this refit design! Totally badass!
Excellent episode. I wasn't really a fan of ST:Enterprise, but I do love the NX Refit. It's a great, well-thought-out design and perfectly fits the time period.
the brilliance what doesn`t get mentioned is the 50`s style in Enterprise Sci-Fi... Doug Drexler and the producers were so right and the refit is perfect
The NX-class refit was added to Star Trek Online as an endgame, Tier 6 ship, and that gave players the NX-class and the NX-class refit. I got it as a gift, and I love it to bits. The refit with the engineering hull is growing on me.
Just picked up the Eaglemoss refit while I was at ComicCon. It is a fantastic design. I have it sitting on a shelf beside the NX-01, and the refit 1701.
To celebrate Star Trek Online's 7th anniversary, as of Jan. 26 the NX Escort Refit (T6) is available from the Lobi Crystal Trader for 900 Lobi. Unfortunately you can only get Lobi from lockboxes. The ship is a single character unlock. You can get it off the Exchange, but current asking prices are starting at 360,000,000 EC.
Thought I'd come back to this video as I decided to grab the Polar Lights 1:1000 NX-01 Refit, and wanted to get inside Doug's head once again for the ship. Who knows, I may grab the 1:350 at some point.
That was fun. I still think the delefter dish could do double-duty as a shield enhanser. Also, I suspect that when they routed the impulse thrust between the nacells, could could get a boost in performance.
26:24:Advancement in technology occurs more during conflicts and suspect during the Romulan war the NX series would have evolved different versions, according to the mission specs
🖖😎👍Very nicely well done and very well informatively explained and executed indeed as always guys, And I myself own both the Eaglemoss model and the Polar lights model kits as well of the refit design👌...
I think it most likely would be reffered to as structural integrity field only as technology advanced later down the line (cannon-show wise) such as in the later shows like most likely TNG,Voyager and even DS9.
I would love to see the Nx refit come around in the new star trek series. Or even better the Archer class you reviewed the other day love that little puddle jumper.
Hey Trekyards! I always used to avoid non canon ships and stuff, but since I started watching the channel I'm hooked. Does anyone have a list / suggestions for fan made Trek films or series? A must watch list!
Doug states the additional hull provides 10 times the power level of the saucer section powerplant, and that it's on hot stand-by. So I'm guessing Captain Archer would be asking Trip to "Make it go to eleven!" :)
My personal opinion: The "NX without the pontoons" should be designated the Daedalus class (sorry, but there was a reason the spherical hull design was rejected; just chalk up that model on Sisko's desk as a concept model that didn't work). Squeeze the AMT 18" model into the sequence right before the Constitution class, and you've got your development evolution right there.
I thought the "polarized hull plating" tech used as protection in the early NX ships evolved into the "structural integrity fields" mentioned later in TOS and TNG. That would have made it a relevant and evolvinh technology. That makes the pool plating a origin tech. At least I've seen it explained this way.
If you lose the secondary hull you lose the entire ship. (antimatter) It is a honor to have Doug Drexler and all the designers available to the public.
Mildly saddened you guys missed an opportunity to poll Doug's feedback about some famous non-canon (and non-Drexler) starship designs from FASA, STO, etc. It'd be interesting to hear his thoughts - as a "leading authority on starship engineering" and as a professional designer/modeller - about what would work and what wouldn't, what he likes and what he'd change, what he thinks about different styles and how they might fit into canon, stuff like that.
This would have been awesome if Enterprise had a 5th season dealing with the earth romulans war and I doubt that the NX class would have been retired when fighting the romulans they would have updated her
Might not be much clearence, but the secondary hull is so set back I think maybe the front two cna still fit where they originally sat. Quick fix would be to move them to the front half of the saucer as opposed to the back half, or off to the sides of the saucer, or it's the first design to innovate secondary hull shuttle bay.
Yeah, watching the underside views of the 3D models they were looking at they are still on the bottom of the saucer, but out towards starboard and port.
I think having a refit or even just a similar remake of the NX01 is perfectly logical for 40 to 50 years later. I'm thinking of something like the Dodge Challenger for a comparison, between the 1970 Challenger and the 2022 Challenger there is tons of advancement in technology, and 52 years! But ultimately the 1970 and the 2022 look very similar to each other. So there could be a whole new ship that is in it's own class between the NX01 and the Constitution that still looks like a NX01 or NX refit.
in my mind, what would have happened was... the federation would begin the NX-01 refit almost immediately after the signing of the charter. The idea of incorporating vulcan tractor beams, andorian shields, as well as telerite equipment into a single ship would have needed a test bed. The NX-01 refit, using a base hull with an engineering section, biger MAM, new sub systems, more power to the shields, phasers and such... and put that out as a proof of concept, would let them get a "new" class out years before anything else.
I'm still newer to the channel, what exactly is different from the (complete) versions and the 2 part mission briefings? I don't think I heard anything new in this they hadn't talked about before.
Welcome to the channel! We did a single mission briefing on the NX-Refit and then a 2 part episode with Doug. part 1 and 2 were released seperatly but we are also asked by fans to release the full versions so we do as there "complete" versions in weekends such as there...a double bill which lets new fans find them and enjoy it as 1 long episode as many people would rather see.
As of right now Im printing the original NX-01 on my Anycubic Photon (looks amazing so far) Would love the model of this version... Is it available even a .lwo file would work for me :)
I enjoyed the Star Trek: Enterprise series and still enjoy watching it to this day. The NX series ship was a beautiful ship and a joy to see how it progressed through the years. Although I really like the refit version and it was really well designed, I don't think it would have been practical in the timeline as designed in Star Trek: Enterprise. The secondary hull just seems like an epic jump from original design and would take a long time to refit. I would see it more as a new class of ship altogether and work better in that regard. A couple of supporting thoughts. It took 100 years or so to get the NX-01 "off the ground" as it were. Just getting a workable design going into production, and getting the Columbia, Challenger and Discovery in 5 or so years. Each of these ships had taken lots of damage in the ensuing conflicts. Some lost out right. So it's difficult for me to grasp a time when any of these ships could have been taken out of service long enough for refit of this magnitude, when they were working on building new ones. (if nothing else then to replace lost or severely damaged ones) After the Federation had been founded, these kinds of increases in technology would be much more plausible as new species, technology and resources could create something like that. As for the mothballing of the NX-01 after "only 10 years", that doesn't seem so ridiculous. It being the prototype ship for the beginnings of the space exploration, it's historical & political significance, makes it a better symbol of accomplishment of the humans and the federation. By that time, hopefully there were enough NX class ships out there and newer designs getting ready for deployment - like something close to this refit version. All that being said, I still love the design of both the original and refit versions - just not quite as a refit of the nx series.
he keeps going back to the B-52 as his touchstone. But the B-52 is still in service for missions it is safe to perform. It's not being pounded on with enemy fire. The NX-01 is taking damage direct to its body, all the time, since there are no shields. Remember how hits to the outside send consoles exploding inside? That is happening in other parts of the ship. And it's not to the plug-and-play components. Imagine the frame, the super structure getting hammered. Like if you crash your car and your bumper is destroyed and airbags deployed, those can be easily replaced. Or even used with out them. But if the frame of your car was bent out of shape, the whole vehicle is comprised and you're at risk of catastrophic failure. Then it's not worth fixing or upgrading. You need to just get a new one. Perhaps when you have shields, like the Constitution, then there is less direct damage to the frame, super structure, and it's easier to make more critical repairs, so it has a longer service life.
The F isent a canon ship, nor do i have a 3D model of it but it will be getting re-made with for the most part screen used models...and just to look better! Thanks!
I like to think that Enterprise was we called back to home base for refilling but the message was garbled and they thought it was decommissioning.... So it was just a misunderstanding....
I have an explanation of why they may have retired the NX-01 after 10 years. Its too old to be upgraded, just think if they changed the engine design as well as the warp scale, it could be that the new engines wouldn't fit.
Doug Drexler my design Guru... under the worst coditions the best design with conditions for more.. with that but definitely not just that... ( BSG, Bugsy, continues ) Doug Drexler a genius of design in our time... and... love the guy... if you ever needed a design star trek BSG ambassador... you could do worse... accessible
lol launch a kickstart, crowdfund enough raw money to buy Star Trek from CBS, once you unlock their restrictions you'll see tons of new Trek productions haha
good show and to see the nx refit flying is great. just one more season, a mini series, even a straight to DVD movie would be cool. btw, the series finale SUCKED. only one I won't ever watch again.
Frozen the phasers with blue in the captain Car Care atos is because they was made by the end or against and the crystals they used that was the color of the crystals that was to cut it something like that because the Klingon and Romulan weapons are green because the crystals that they use from their plan and their areas are green the human eye are red so is your color so that's what it is I've been at that time then doing some of the most advanced powerful faces in the Federation the Balkans made the shields for the Constitution class ships and I think they do inside the hall or the whole material was Endor in technology was a joint project the Constitution class like the Aries class were all member worlds worked on it
Wonderful to look back and IT IS A CRIME that it was cancelled WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN, I think Discovery should not have happened THEY SHOULD HAVE been the next series in the line. If you asked the fans I think 52 to 67 % would have like to see IT BECOME A SERIES and maybe a Romulan war.
STE got so much crap and it didn't deserve it. Yeah, some of the early episodes were meh, but the Xindi arc was pretty good. Also, we've had so many shows where the Ent was a match for any of its peer civilizations and the only time it ever was out matched was when it faced some God level entity or was out numbered. It was fun seeing an Enterprise where they weren't guaranteed to be a near match for every ship threat it ran into. It was fun to watch the crew have to adapt and innovate in order to succeed. Anyway it was new and fresh to see an neophyte Enterprise in a galaxy quadrant almost like the lawless wild west set in outer space.... if this show had some out a few years later when streaming services had really come into their own we would have seen this show actually make its 7 year run... now all we get is Discovery... yuck... Pike and his "number one" are pretty cool, but it's so hard to sit through that wreck of a show... mushroom engines... 10 year before TOS... miss me with that crap!
I find the refit pretty ugly. But then again i never found the NX1 to be a charmer. I dont think there are many out there that would even rate it in top 10 federation ships. 1. Enterprise E 2. Akira 3. Prometheus 4. Excelsior class 5. Voyager 6. Enterprise D 7. Constitution refit 8. Nova class 9. Reliant 10.Defiant Gluing the bottom section onto the Nx looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie . Thats the problem with modern prequels, you just cant make the modern look fit into the existing universe which is why prequels should not be done in Star Trek. Leave that to fan films.
FLAME4564 The similarity is there. But the issue here is that this model looks ridiculous. It has no place in Star Trek lore. There is no sane person that can claim that the refit isnt a nonsensical idea. Refitting a star ship makes sense when its an upgrade to the nacelles, or weapons, or hull, but when you add such a significant addition to a starship, like this, it makes much more sense to start from scratch, designing a new ship then it is stitching a whole new part to the existing ship. There are hundreds of problems that would pop up when doing this and it would be far more effective, time saving, cheaper, smarter, would yield better results to start from the beginning. This would never happen in Star Trek. NX refit is a an abomination, literally.
Always a great vid, Drex doesn't dissapoint, NX refit for life !!!
Indeed.
Doug Drexler seems like a really fun guy!
Yeah he does. :) I always look forward to episodes with him in it.
Damn it
I want to say that

The NX Refit is awesome. They should do a sequel series to Enterprise.
Doug is a national treasure :)
Doug, I adore what you did with the refit. I also appreciate the thought put into it and the regard you have for cannon.

MAybe one or two seasons of world building and then into the adventures that made history.
Love watching these years later still
A lovely episode to watch today - thank you guys and Happy 50th Anniversary to Star Trek
A couple years' worth of watching Samuel play with the Eaglemoss models sold me on it, and the one I got was the NX refit, and holy hell is it gorgeous.
LOVE THIS OPENING YOU SHOULD BRING IT BACK
The most memorable thing about STE was when Comdr. Tucker was talking about how working with the ship's engine shaved years off his life. It made it seem more realistic and showed that this tech wasn't something to mess around with.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for your discussions! I feel a whole lot less socially isolated listening to you guys!
This is so awesome and heartbreaking at the same time. It is so unfair that Enterprise was cancelled just as it found its stride, I absolutely love this refit design! Totally badass!

1:35.....it was used in the show.
It was the Columbia (the ship that tucker transferred to)
Just picked up the Eaglemoss refit while I was at ComicCon. It is a fantastic design. I have it sitting on a shelf beside the NX-01, and the refit 1701.
Doug seems like he would be a fun guy to hangout with
Well done on the Trek Yard Legends opening gentlemen, well done indeed. : )

Doug Drexler, awsome and so right... Trekyards is epic in their endeavour...
The hull plating still exists in the 24th century. It goes by the names like defense field ST2TWOK, deflector plating STTMP Enterprise blueprints.
Thought I'd come back to this video as I decided to grab the Polar Lights 1:1000 NX-01 Refit, and wanted to get inside Doug's head once again for the ship. Who knows, I may grab the 1:350 at some point.

I still think the delefter dish could do double-duty as a shield enhanser.
Also, I suspect that when they routed the impulse thrust between the nacells, could could get a boost in performance.
I love the intro
Would have been nice to have seen that ship and Romulan War story arc take place....
6:22: a starship needs to have interchangeable and upgradable sections. So that we would see a steady progression of enhancement.
26:24:Advancement in technology occurs more during conflicts and suspect during the Romulan war the NX series would have evolved different versions, according to the mission specs
🖖😎👍Very nicely well done and very well informatively explained and executed indeed as always guys, And I myself own both the Eaglemoss model and the Polar lights model kits as well of the refit design👌...
why does the refit still have the saucer deflector?
Because the ship is able to split and it needs that deflector in that situation
ah, or course, thanks!
Very cool video.
I like to think that the enterprise was refitted after 2161, but rechristend as the dauntless, which explains the NX-01A in voyager
Would be nice to see the NX-01 refit handing off to Discovery. Would be great to see T'Pol again
I wish we could have seen this on screen.
I've always thought the hull plating was later referred to as a structural integrity field.
Are we going to get a revisit now that the refit has actually shown up as a Licensed work in STO?
Hey Trekyards! I always used to avoid non canon ships and stuff, but since I started watching the channel I'm hooked. Does anyone have a list / suggestions for fan made Trek films or series? A must watch list!
can you do an episode on the proposed galaxy class refit? the one based on the sovereign class. I would love to see a model of that
Doug states the additional hull provides 10 times the power level of the saucer section powerplant, and that it's on hot stand-by. So I'm guessing Captain Archer would be asking Trip to "Make it go to eleven!" :)
great stuff.
I think that Ablative Hull evolved in structural integrality field (sorry for my Englisch)

(If this is an idea you might actually roll out then I submit some of my fave ships, lol - Andor, Northampton, Thufir, Lenthal, Winged Defender)
In the relaunch novels NX-01 wasnt refitted.. It was turned into a museum after the Romulan wars. NX-02 went missing so it was ot refitted.....-
This would have been awesome if Enterprise had a 5th season dealing with the earth romulans war and I doubt that the NX class would have been retired when fighting the romulans they would have updated her
with the refit and the attachment to second hull where does the shuttle pod bay doors go?
Okej, looks good but, what about hangars?
Might not be much clearence, but the secondary hull is so set back I think maybe the front two cna still fit where they originally sat.

On the subject of the NX class being able to do Warp 7 or not, doesn't Tucker literally say in the captains mess, "Here we are, toasting at warp 7"?
Wish they would add the Columbia Class to STO. It already has a model.
Doug, Have you considered any ideas for a similar refit to the Intrepid or Delta type ships or would you see them as too old to be worth refitting?
Well Captain HE didn't acknowledge THAT IS NO MOON I got ya
I prefer to think that the addition of the secondary hull is a design unique to Kirk's era...
I'm still newer to the channel, what exactly is different from the (complete) versions and the 2 part mission briefings? I don't think I heard anything new in this they hadn't talked about before.
Welcome to the channel! The NX scaling always seemed to be a bit too big to me, at least when compared to the Connie. The disc seems too fat at the size its always shown.
As of right now Im printing the original NX-01 on my Anycubic Photon (looks amazing so far) Would love the model of this version... Is it available even a .lwo file would work for me :)

Stuart, just curious. Could you update the intro to include the F?
The F isent a canon ship, nor do i have a 3D model of it but it will be getting re-made with for the most part screen used models...and just to look better! Thanks!
Ah okay cool!
hey its certainly more canon than that drawin of the prototype ambassador
indeed! and that proto Ambassador wont be included either :)
When would the NX class change to NCC?
I like to think that Enterprise was we called back to home base for refilling but the message was garbled and they thought it was decommissioning.... So it was just a misunderstanding....
That word is supposed to be Refitting
Doug Drexler is the man.
I have an explanation of why they may have retired the NX-01 after 10 years. Its too old to be upgraded, just think if they changed the engine design as well as the warp scale, it could be that the new engines wouldn't fit.
I got the XL NX 01 refit from Eaglemoss o_o
Doug Drexler my design Guru... under the worst coditions the best design with conditions for more.. with that but definitely not just that... The only problem I have with this ship is that it won't be on a show!
at least 3x awsome...
D.A.R.P.A. has a handheld but on a tripod they call PHASR.
Commander Cockings has the rank thingy on the wrong shoulder lol
They need to finish The rest Star Trek Enterprise because the series is really interesting to me
lol launch a kickstart, crowdfund enough raw money to buy Star Trek from CBS, once you unlock their restrictions you'll see tons of new Trek productions haha
I love Drex on Facebook. I would love to get to spend a day talking with him.
Don't listen to what they say in that final episode. The Enterprise was damaged beyond repair during a battle with the Romulans and had to be retired.
good show and to see the nx refit flying is great. just one more season, a mini series, even a straight to DVD movie would be cool. btw, the series finale SUCKED. only one I won't ever watch again.
I dare a sailor to call their XO "sidekick". It would not go over well.
Frozen the phasers with blue in the captain Car Care atos is because they was made by the end or against and the crystals they used that was the color of the crystals that was to cut it something like that because the Klingon and Romulan weapons are green because the crystals that they use from their plan and their areas are green the human eye are red so is your color so that's what it is I've been at that time then doing some of the most advanced powerful faces in the Federation the Balkans made the shields for the Constitution class ships and I think they do inside the hall or the whole material was Endor in technology was a joint project the Constitution class like the Aries class were all member worlds worked on it
Upside down Akira lol
Wonderful to look back and IT IS A CRIME that it was cancelled WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN, I think Discovery should not have happened THEY SHOULD HAVE been the next series in the line. If you asked the fans I think 52 to 67 % would have like to see IT BECOME A SERIES and maybe a Romulan war.
lets just say its the first warp 6 ship instead of 7. problem solved.
1. Enterprise E
2. Akira
3. Prometheus
4. Excelsior class
5. Voyager
6. Enterprise D
7. Constitution refit
8. Nova class
9. Reliant
10.Defiant
Gluing the bottom section onto the Nx looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie . Thats the problem with modern prequels, you just cant make the modern look fit into the existing universe which is why prequels should not be done in Star Trek. Leave that to fan films.
Yeah I've never found the NX to be anything to write home about.
Though that secondary hull almost looks similar to the MJ connie hull.
Abomination? rofl HAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA and you also think the Church/JJprise is an abomination omfg xD hahahah
FLAME4564 Ha? The JJprise i dont even consider being part of the Star Trek universe. Thats a whole separate thing in my mind.
I hate the refit ruins the design of the NX
