    I really wish the devs at STO would have adapted your take on this ship. A ship with a big lance phaser would have been way better than yet anothet carrier. Great vid.

      If you get the immolating phaser lance console off the Demios Pilot destroyer(Picard S1 synth ship) you can slap that on to give it a phaser lance.

    The wasted, empty space between the nacelles always seemed to beg for an Akira style torpedo launcher pod. I understand the ship would have been classified as a heavy attack frigate in peace time, but the retrofit would have been quite simple should war have been declared.

      Maybe it was intentional. High-threat assignments get rapid refit at select Drydock facilities. Additional shield generators, pulse cannons, phaser strips, full-size or micro torpedo launch units could be fixed to existing hard points within hours, depending on the nature of the mission.

    • @pauls478

      Another thought for that space is that it could be used for cargo: run a series of tractor beam emitters along each pylon to hold the cargo in place for rapid load & unload, plus easy to jettison if a quick escape is required.

    The Norway is a neat little ship and always seemed to be pretty solid and looks absolutely stunning remastered.
    I always envisioned the Norway as fitting into the role of a destroyer. Something that makes up the rank and file of the federation fleet and executes manoeuvres with other ships like the sabre and defiant. While I do enjoy the inclusion of the Lance phaser I personally prefer to see it as a close support gunboat, something relatively manoeuvrable and fast that it can keep up with the lighter ships and join them in the fray without being too much of a hinderance to them. It can sit just behind the skirmish line as a reserve force that can quickly plug any holes in the line until a galaxy or sovereign shows up. I guess i think this because it looks very sturdy, the ship appears to be strongly armoured almost like a scaled up defiant.

    That empty space between the nacelles could be used for so many improvements, such as a more powerful reactor core, more or more powerful engines, rearward firing weapons, extra shield generators, or a bay from which auxiliary craft can be launched and recovered. All without increasing the ships size very much, and not at all with the bow or stern facing an enemy vessel.

      @@MandoMTL I'm not sure if the idea was to have the nacelles and pylons 'slide' originally, along the tines, or if it serves instead as a dock for 'equipment modules' and so forth. Useful, surely, if so.

      @tburrows357 ปีที่แล้ว

      That also bugged me about the design. First because it looks like such a week point. You hit that forked area at its smallest point and you can blow a necelle clean off and possibly cause a warp core overload back along the warp conduit from core to nacelle
      But I also viewed that space like the millennium Falcon. As it was designed as large cargo container mover. Perfectly placed between the warp nacelles means minimal strain on the warp bubble. Think like a sea can shipping container but bigger sliding right in between the nacelles. Like for building outposts and new space stations quickly in forward operating bases.

    First I'd heard of the Norway-class Phaser Lance. It has gone up on my list quite a bit as a result. I do like that the Norway presents such a small target, particularly if attacking with its phaser lance, that with a slightly nose-up attitude it can protect its entire secondary hull and warp nacelles from direct fire (power couplings included)

      Maybe they intended to have some flank tubes at the leading edge. Combined with maneuverability, Norway can quickly down attack ships, pirate raiders, and give it an edge against sluggish opponents of equal or greater mass.
      Norway might be a good mod candidate for microtorpedo phalanx. OR, perhaps a mini torpedo, a smaller, cheaper photon warhead with a small, fast missile launch pod that can be easily mounted, deployed, retracted, and replaced on a number of designs. A ripple-launch sequence would devastate light targets and punish all but the heaviest ships to either flank. OP, or prudent defense measure under threat of invasion?

    Brings to mind why Federation ships have a secondary hull, or at least one so far removed from the primary hull.
    On a secondary note. It sounds like teh Norway class is intended to be used almost as a cross between a torpedo boat a dive bomber. It has to maneuver like a torpedo boat with the precision strike of one big bomb from a dive bomber. In this case, I see otehr ships bombarding a target with photon torpedoes to weaken a shield or two, then the Norway comes in with a precision heavy punch of the phaser lance. Also, in this role, it would not need a lot of phaser banks, just a few since it was meant to provide fire support in much the way a tank (or assult gun) would provide fire support for infantry with the nfantry providing protection for the tank.

    The Norway did fall into obscurity till I think the Dominion Wars game. At least thats the first time I saw it post First Contact, then popped its head out again in SFC3...I think it was AWOL in Armada 1 and 2.
    Definitely a neat little ship; larger then those fast attack destroyers like the Saber, but not quite cruiser sized. I always thought of her as a sort of heavy escort for larger slower battlecruisers. You calling it a monitor/artillery ship was a first for me and a class I never considered.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its role as a monitor came from its role in the anti borg fleet. it looked too delicate to be getting up close like the defiant and Steamrunner. but it clearly didn't have the torpedoes of the Akria so i reasoned a lance phaser. since it has that very strange cutout on its bow.

    Yes! This is one of if not my favourite ship, it was my sto captain's first command in headcannon. Love that you mention the Phaser Lance, it is pretty clear in First contact that it has one. Or at very least a phaser that is it's primary weapon, for it is fired at the same time as the Akira's and Saber's torpedo volleys on a full forward attack pattern.
    Also the deflector is high up in the recessed nose section, far too much room for nothing at all considering it's a warship that could fit at least 2 torpedo launchers in that space.

    Quite enjoyed this video, the Norway is my favorite of the oft forgotten ships of the federation. id love to captain one personally. it seems like one of the most sensibly designed ships in star trek, when you think about what its main opponents would be. Its also suprisingly durable despite low stats in the game star trek: legacy. ive been able to severely damage ships like the D'Deridex in 1 on 1s at higher difficulties, but i dont get a phaser lance there.
    i would love to see more of her. if shes a long range ship, its possible she could still be used in Picard in that role, as she wouldnt be targeted unless the battle turned against the federation, and like you mentioned, she wouldnt be helpless even then.
    Also, would be nice to have some norwegian names, but then i wouldnt know how to say them!

    Whilst my favourite ship will remain the Intrepid Class all of the new ship designs are great and it's a real pity the norway was lost or a while.
    Giving it a Phaser lance help it make sense in the fleet as well.
    as for the phaser arrays? Well starleet likes to give most of its ships good all round defense for the most part. So I assume you add as many as are needed to meet that requirement.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886

      yeah the Norway and steamrunner both have issues with having inexplicably split arrays. when there is no need. and in fact is been suggested that bigger arrays increase power. so i don't see why for example the new model shows 4 arrays on either side of the Wedge.

    How much more powerful is the lance phaser supposed to be when compared to standard phasers? It strikes me as a weapon that would have a long recharge rate and slow rate of fire. What are it's in canon history and its strengths and its weaknesses?

  • @OllamhDrab
    @OllamhDrab 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the Norway is one of those ships that suffers terribly from the 'Looks terrible in plan views' syndrome. And still ungainly from a lot of the shots where it appears in the background. Kind of like the Saber and to some extent the Steamrunner, which has some badarse-looking angles. (The Saber-class actually grew on me, and the Steamrunner looked built-for-purpose all along, but I think the Norway maybe really took the loving attention of the 'Squadrons' fan film to ever actually look right. And it makes sense that lance phasers feature prominently in ships designed to be anti-Borg ...cause generally you'd want to hit really hard in a short time before they adapt. Also in the times of the Breen weapon being checkmate, you'd also want to ...not get hit by the thing and instead hit hard before they hit you. Agile ships that hit hard would be well-concentrated there.

    This ship was always a hard one to sort out. I encountered the version packed with guns and figured it was an 'escort' ship that was easier to mass produce. That's what everyone seemed to want after all. If I had to balance it, I'd give the weapons, shields, and sensors of an Intrepid with a scaled back warp speed. Looking at the Norway again leaves me with the imagery of rushed production. Modelers can make rush cut jobs because they think ILM will just smooth out and refine the model digitally while ILM will just uses blur and distancing to hide those imperfections because Paramount paid for the cg value of an Ollie's clearance rack. That or I've been watching too much production stuff.
    I dare say it might be time to take a little artistic license on their appearance and refine their rough edges if nothing else.

    With many ship classes, the naming convention is a bit all over the place. Its actually rarer that starfleet even uses a naming convention for classes of ship. The Connie, California, Akira, Oberth, Saber and the Luna classes have naming conventions, yes. But the Excelsior doesnt. Nor does the Galaxy, Intrepid, Ambassador, Steamrunner, Miranda, or Nebula classes. So it depends. The fact the Norway is named after places on Earth? I think there is a naming convention. Its just not places in Norway. 🤷‍♂️

And and smaller one near Vulcan that makes ships for Vulcan crews . That said, I want to love the Norway, but I find the geometry of its nacelle pylons annoying. They are too long, too bulky, and connected by too narrow a joint to the engineering hull. battlestar Norway Class

  • @lanebowles8170
    @lanebowles8170 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmmm... I disagree with you about the number of phasers the Norway class would have had. Six phasers should be the minimum to maintain a full round field of fire typical of Federation ships.
    If you said that the Federation was so desperate for ships against the Borg (and were certain it would be the Borg they would be primarily fighting) that they were literally pushing ships out of construction when they had only the armament strictly required to fulfill their role in an anti-Borg task force and also were half finished in the rest of the ships' interiors not strictly required for a battle with the Borg I could get behind that argument.
    However, that is not what is implied in the movies and DS9, as the second Borg incursion came as a half expected surprise amid the preparations for conflict with a much more traditional enemy in the Dominion and Cardassians. In such a conflict with the Dominion and the Cardassians, their ships would be able to take advantage of the Norway's severe lack of arcs of fire with the mere two or three phasers you would alot to the Norway class. I cannot see a conservative Starfleet engineer/architect allowing this to come to pass.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      while i would agree particular with ships of the 60s the Norway is extremely maneuverable and so its very difficult to get into a blind spot. couple that with formation flying and its almost impossible to get around a norway.

    • @lanebowles8170
      @lanebowles8170 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 I agree, the Norway class is extremely maneuverable...in comparison to a Borg Cube, Romulan D'deridex, Jem'Hadar Battlecruiser, and Federation Galaxy class ships.
      This would very much not be the case when coming up against small Klingon Birds-of-Prey, Jem'Hadar attack ships, or even the Cardassian Hideki class. It would be these ships the Norway class would have to fight against far more often than against a single big opponent.
      In regards to formation flying, first this is not something the Federation Starfleet would be much practiced at as, far as we know, there hasn't been an organized war on the scale of the Dominion War or even the short Federation-Klingon War in decades. Not even the end of your version of the Cardassian Border Wars would provide the proper exposure to encourage the development of close formations.
      Nevertheless, having reviewed this video a second time, I realized that the disagreement between us is a moot point. At 5:20 to 5:50 you describe that various sources place the number of secondary phaser armament at 4 to 6, which you consider to be far too many this simple hull design. Then you go ahead and describe the secondary phaser armament you imagine, consisting of two phaser strips on the main (primary?) hull (upper?), one big ventral phaser, then "two pairs" (4 in total?) on the nacelle pylons. That adds up to 7 phasers, more than what you described most of your sources stated. Thus our disagreement is a moot point.

    venom geek I would think You would need a deflector @ probably just about any real speed faster than maneuvering thrusters. Can you imagine not using a Nav deflector @ full impulse. Just try hitting meteors & meteorites @.25c or any impulse speed really. Your ship would not last long even if hitting just tiny dust particles @ full impulse. & So just to make my point & for reference say at full impulse .25c. That would be like hitting objects @1.677e+8 MPH or 167,700,000 MPH. So I'm pretty confident that yeah you would need a deflector. So i don't get the lance phase r deflector idea. Makes no scientific sense.
