I made this trip 38 years ago, on a night train from Zagreb. We were snowbound in the mountains for a couple of hours and didn't see a thing but wet snow falling. Woke up in the morning by the Adriatic in bright sun and a lovely spring morning. Little did I know that we were passing a beautiful landscape with such a beautiful and dramatic descent from the mountains. Not until now. Thank you!
Once again a splendid video! But I see the Croatian Railways are suffering from the same overall slowness we have here in Romania. Zagreb and Rijeka are not that far apart, 4 hours and a half is way too much for such a distance!
I think railroads in the various states of the former Yugoslavia suffer from slowness issues due to the mountainous terrain of the Balkans, which makes high-speed rail very expensive to build (the recently-opened high-speed line between Belgrade and Novi Sad in Serbia is kind of a rare exception, mostly because of the flat terrain between the two cities).
@@blackdemon30703 It's still quite a bit better, especially on the Palermo - Messina line. Messina - Catania would also be OK, if not for trains stopping in every village.
I am just over halfway through this journey, but just had to comment on how lovely it has been so far. Being on the other side of the world in Australia, seeing the beauty of Croatia has been a real education to me. Thank you for sharing this with us. :)
As you can read in one of the previous comments: the railway line is absolutely fascinating in terms of landscape, especially in the second half - captured superbly on film in the best weather 👍👍👍 Beautiful cloud formations are often the icing on the cake: with a lot of imagination you can see a white cloud pig from around 02:35:40 minutes - after the Hodnik tunnel in the section up to Vrbovsko station: that certainly brought luck and helped the train journey to be presented successfully here 😉😄 Four and a half hours in a row is quite a lot: but divided into daily chunks, it made yesterday's holiday and this morning great entertainment - thank you very much! 🙏🖖

About the catenary support here called ''umbrella-type'': in Italy we have in use this supporting system but we call it ''crab's legs''... Nice video, anyway.
There is also another name for this bridge that railway people go crazy about and that's "Hendrix Bridge", because EVERY time they freshly paint the bridge, someone climbs on the bridge to write a huge "HENDRIX" graffiti on the middle of the bridge. It has been happening for decades now, literally bridge cannot be clean without the graffiti for a single day.

Made this same trip in 2012 looking for answers why some of my ancestors had to flee the region around the city of Karlovac in 1892 because these people and region are such a beautiful place to behold. There 17 families the left in a three month period in the fall of 1892 and they went to Australia, Canada and the US. They were Bakers and Wainrights that built carriages, buggies and wagons. Always wonder why they needed to flee such a beautiful land and people.
@richardlong3745 Many people emigrated in that period, in many cases it was a difficult economic situation, a bit later there were political reasons... but it is nice that you went there and visit the places where your family originated.
@@RailRelaxation Thanks it means a lot because homeland still lives within us all. I've economically able and lucky enough to find some of my relatives that immigrated to Australia, Canada and the US and hope to find maybe some left behind family vestige of my great, great grandparents families around Karlovac and find their family roots and visit a few cemeteries to see if I can find some of their forebears grave sites for me and my children family heritage knowledge and wellbeing because if were lucky family is what we come into this world having to protect us and when we leave family is there to remember and pray for us. A line revised in reverse! We could say many things about this line: I would divide it into three parts! The first segment up to Jastrebarsko - Karlovac needs a more modern upgrade: It is impossible to see a single-track line connecting the capital to one of the main ports of Croatia so ruined and obsolete. Low speeds, dated railway material, which HZPP are modernizing but which needs a greater push. It is inexplicable why in all these years they have never thought of doubling the line up to Karlovac. The plain does not present any major obstacles. In the first section up to Karlovac the line seems very dated. In the second section up to Moravice you can see improvements on the station platforms but the train traffic is scarce! The setting from the valley of the river Mreznica to that of the river Dobra is beautiful. Going up Gorski Kotar and climbing the Dinaric Alps you can see a change in landscape, much more mountainous. The stations of Ostarije and Ogulin see a different type of traffic. I wonder if HZPP intends to electrify the line to Split. It would be nice but I see it as difficult with those slopes. Maybe the use of hydrogen trains would increase speeds. You mentioned a new basic line from Zagreb to Rijeka, but where would it pass? Would it be with tunnels and viaducts and above all how much will it cost?
