  • Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway [1974] Pt. 1
Genesis released their longest, biggest, most conceptual and ambitious album in November of 1974. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a double album narrative centered around a New York youth named Rael.
The tale written exclusively by Peter Gabriel is interwoven with dreamscapes and surrealistic cityscapes, mythical monsters, bizarre encounters and teenage angst. It's incredibly complicated, and brilliantly executed.
The story is just one part, and is obviously the focus. But the music is classic Genesis - big bold sounds, gorgeous melodies, the works.
Being so incredibly ambitious, it's a very special and unique album, unlike anything else Genesis recorded. This is a big and complex album to talk about - stay tuned for part 2!
Please let us know what you think of this record! We love comments.
Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching :)

This album made me a Genesis fan for life. One of the best works of art from the 20th century. My desert island album.

This album sounds like exactly what it is: Peter Gabriel emptying out every last idea he had for Genesis before moving on... I mean EVERY last idea. Truly inspiring, endlessly open for revisiting. Selling England perfected the formula, Lamb pushed it to its limits. Crazy to think that the title track was the last song finished. My favorite Genesis record.

This is Peter Gabriel's swan song and no other vocalist in the prog era was as bold, daring and theatrical as peter was during this stage in his career the fact that he was acting out this whole narrative along just by doing it with his vocal range alone is extraordinary and also the rest of the band are in full force supporting the story along

Mike Rutherford suggested to use St-Exupery ''Le Petit Prince'' as a base story for the new album. Very happy this idea didn't won. The Lamb theme in NYC brought Genesis in new territories. Almost proto punk in some bits.

Very glad to have stumbled upon this video. So nice- two people discussing The Lamb at length (just as I would, with a friend). It is a very important album to me. I just adore it.

For me it’s probably their Best?
Especially with Peter still in the Band…
Then a very close 2nd for me is Selling England by The Pound…
Have U Tried Listening to Porcupine Tree?
My Personal Top 5 Albums by PT would be?
‘In Absentia’ 2002, ‘Fear of The Blank Planet’ 2007, ‘Deadwing’ 2005, ‘Closure/Continuation 2022 and ‘Lightbulb Sun’ 2000…
But they have at least 5 other Very Good Albums that some Fans like even better than my Top 5 by PT!

Thank you! We know Porcupine Tree but haven't listened much - thanks for all of the recommendations! :)

Your Welcome and please give PT a Chance or a Review?
Especially with their New Album Closure/Continuation!
Their first Studio Album in almost 13 Years!
It’s a Strong Return Album for PT I think along with Most of their Fans…
PT had Toured this Late Summer into Fall…
With their Biggest Crowds Every in Their Careers…

Definitely better than, and pre-saged the Wall!
Recently re-visited Chamber of 32 doors and the dynamics on that song are just fantastic! There's a great animated version on TH-cam I'd recommend!

I think the fans enjoy the music more than the band did. They talk about how much was going on in their lives, the absence of PG while he was dealing with the difficult birth of his daughter, the other band members needing to step in and complete the writing, all the technical problems with the slide projectors and Peter’s costume. I think they were all happy to move on.

Absolutely, amazing that they were able to create this complicated beautiful album amidst all their personal difficulties :)

'Hairless Heart' is important to the story. This is about coming to grips with his emotions. A hairy heart must be shaved to allow love to enter. The porcupine tells Rael he has only himself to blame.
