  • Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway [1974] Pt. 2
Genesis released their longest, biggest, most conceptual and ambitious album in November of 1974. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a double album narrative centered around a New York youth named Rael.
The tale written exclusively by Peter Gabriel is interwoven with dreamscapes and surrealistic cityscapes, mythical monsters, bizarre encounters and teenage angst. It's incredibly complicated, and brilliantly executed.
The story is just one part, and is obviously the focus. But the music is classic Genesis - big bold sounds, gorgeous melodies, the works.
Being so incredibly ambitious, it's a very special and unique album, unlike anything else Genesis recorded. Make sure to check out part 1 if you didn't catch it!
Please let us know what you think of this record! We love comments.

The music is great, but the lyrics are dense and difficult. I have recently gone back and spent months trying to figure out Peter's allegory. My notes have turned into a 35-page essay! (if interested I can send a PDF) There are just so many ideas presented on this album, but they come together to finally explain IT.
(the Waiting Room is said to be Genesis's only free-form jazz piece. I read it was never played the same way twice live, but followed a loose script)
I agree Peter's vocals on this album may be the best of his career. So evocative. And yes, Peter and Phil singing together is wonderful. The music is all about the story. The music makes you FEEL the story. When looking down into the rapids the wind makes me feel cold. In the water, I feel the cold. Great. Remarkable.

I was 13 and of course immediately fascinated by this album. Had it for almost 3/4 of my life now. Me quietly whispering/singing the intro to In The Cage was the first "music" both my kids heard after being.. you know.. "released from their cages".

This half of the album is a work of greatness from the whimsical side 3 opener Lillywhite Lilith to the mesmerizing the Lamia and the epic the colony of slippermen it's a crazy ride that plays with the listener's imagination

I listened to the whole thing. I'm still trying to understand the story. I cheated a little. By looking up stuff about it. I see that people have said that this album is Gabriel's swan song. I will always listen to this album. And the rest. I appreciate them all.

I think Jethro Tull's A Passion Play can match The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in its cryptic aspect and labyrinthine journey (two of my favorite concept albums).

I always had trouble with "Lilywhite Lilith." This album was released right around the same time that Harry Chapin released his saccharine ballad "Cat's Cradle," which was omnipresent on the radio when I first bought The Lamb. The verse melody of "Lilywhite Lilith" was so similar to Chapin's song that I still find it hard to enjoy, almost 50 years later.

I think the story is the weak point of the album. However, it's hard to imagine how different the music would have been had the band agreed to go with Mike's concept idea of The Little Prince.
