@@locmari Yes....green screens, some touch ups, additions in certain scenes, a lot of the Citadel, etc...... but my comment is an exact response to your comment, as people keep bringing up its perfect complimentary use of CGI to downplay how much is done in camera.
If you look at behind the scenes videos, even the cars driving through the sandstorm was done for real, with the sandstorm added over it - and the storm is so well stylised and visually sumptuous that it doesn't take you out. When you see Fury Road and Furiosa side by side, it's hard to compare. In Furiosa I could almost spot every transition between 'real car' and 'CG car' even within a single shot - I don't think there's a single moment in Fury Road where I'm taken out of the film by a full CG car.
Long Rant incoming: Not really. Furiosa was a very bloated film. Pacing slowed by its very pointless first chapters which are up so much time that none of the interesting characters got a chance to develop or interact in any meaningful way. Aka Dementus. There is only the silhouette of a tragic character but again no real substance because the useless filler acts that ate up so much screen time for absolutely no reason. If we had just cut the whole of act 1, nothing would have drastically changed. And instead we got a script of Furiosa actually sacrificing bits and pieces of herself to rise to the rank of Imperator, just for the sake of vengeance would be so much more interesting than the time skip. Then there is Praetorian Jack. He was the most useless addition in the entire movie. His motivation and interest is absolutely absent. He has a very one dimensional stoic personality. Who is he? How did he becomes Praetorian? Why does he want to help Furiosa? What does she teach Furiosa about road combat? Who knows because guess what, time skip. Unlike Fury Road which was a very tightly written script where every setup had a payoff. For example: In Fury Road Max is forced to give his blood as a human blood bag and when Furiosa asks for Max's name, he only grunts as he doesn't want to be friends or chums, he is only doing what he needs to survive. By the end, Max willingly gives his blood, and his name. Similarly, the movie starts with a race away from the citadel which was seen as a prison but then it turns into a race towards the citadel as the symbol of hope. Meanwhile, Furiosa was just action for action's sake. The script was just an excuse for fight sequences. And Anya Taylor Joy's Furiosa was very underwhelming. All her character seems to do is scowl. "Hey girl why you sneaking?" *Scowl* "Hey, who are you?" *Scowl* "I will teach you the way of the road warrior! *Scowl* "I am the man that murdered your mother. *Scowl* "Here have some food." *Scowl* And the ending was just so disappointing. Furiosa just gets superpowers after she loses her arm.
People have unrealistic expectations. Fury Road was lightning in a bottle, a follow up just as good would have been impossible after 9 years of production hell. Furiosa ended being a far better film than I thought it would be, and it's a shame that we'll likely never see a follow up to the mad max world.
furiosa and fury road reached a rare point in prequel production that they enhance each other after watching the other one. And that is something not all directors can say they achieved
I got introduced to Mad Max by watching Furiosa first, I went crazy for it. Then I went and watched Fury Road and the added background information I had prior to watching it for the first time made it *chefs kiss*
HOLY, really which I had such experience... For me it's like: You know it's technically impossible to be an actor but heck, not even an audition (btw I'm programmer by trade nothing to do with cinema).
Knew the moment I saw the trailer I had to check my expectations because Fury Road is perfection and the kind of cinematic lightning in a bottle that we will most likely never see again. Got my tickets for Tuesday night, I can't wait.
I hope you enjoyed it. I certainly checked my expectations and still thought it was very good. I think, if this was the first "mad max" film to ever come out, we actually would've been blown away. It's still a great film on its own, just isn't what fury road was: a masterpiece.
True, but most animation studios that production companies hire for their movies aren't even located in the United States. Animation as a medium is largely outsourced to developing countries like India and North Korea of all places. Maybe this movie did hire an American animation studio, I genuinely have no idea, but unfortunately, paying animators better doesn't guarantee that they'll keep their jobs.

I loved fury road’s action and I don’t know why but I loved furiosa,s action even more. It felt more creative and diverse. Furiosa basically tripled down on new weapons and ideas. Third act alone amazed me by the amount of different vehicles, weapons, ways people died and it just felt so fresh. It definitely felt more set piecy but I think this made me realize I kinda love that. They’re gimmicks and choreography of totally unrealistic action but also that’s what I expect from mad max. This is a movie movie, as in it knows its main existence is for fun. Heck even dementus knows it.
I agree. This movie improves on CGI action and even story. Fury Road was good but you're missing the backstory on the characters. Here it fleshes in her story so you care for her. They also need to do a movie on mad Max himself.
I enjoyed Furiosa but it was definitely a harder watch than fury road. A lot of suffering in this one, but the lows do get balanced out with some good highs too. Furiosa on the warpath as an angle of vengeance in the black car was awesome to behold.
"This movie makes Fury Road better." Thank you! I saw Furiosa yesterday and I've been struggling to articulate my thoughts as succinctly as you have in a single sentence!
The bad CGI is apparent in the trailer. The issue for me is that it just doesn't look like cars and building falling have any mass. They move in unnatural ways that your brain picks up as them having no real physical weight so it eliminates the real emotional weight.
Having watched it, i honestly think it wasn’t that bad. I was hesitant to go because of the CGI but while it was noticeable occasionally it never detracted from the experience, for me atleast. Highly recommend it
Y'all need to stop picking everything to death and live. While y'all were debating the mass and density of falling objects... I saw an excellent film This is SUCH. a fantastic movie!
I just saw it and I liked it. It didn't have a specific goal that drive that Fury Road had. The film was more of a slow burn. I didn't think the CGI was bad at all. There was alot of good action sequences. My only real complaint is it skipped over the forty-day wasteland war too fast. I would have liked to see more of that. They should have cut one of the earlier action sequences for more of the wasteland war.
Furiosa felt like a classic Mad Max. I grew up on the originals. This was much more of world examination and explanation with furiosa's story as a through line. I love that Miller made a completely different film in the mad max world other than just trying to repeat fury roads' success
yeah, i felt the same way too. fury road was beautiful, but since i watched the original trio first, it didn't stick with me as much as it did to others, especially since no mel gibson. people hating furiosa are simply those who only grew up on fury road.
It’s weird for everyone to figure out that George Miller never makes the same movie twice. Even all the Mad Max films, while sharing the same world and themes, have nothing to do with each other in style, content, or purpose. Who even expected this to be anything like Fury road? The Road Warrior was the sequel to Mad Max, with the same actor, and it was a totally different character. The first movie wasn’t even set in the apocalypse. Just bad times.
this is a prequel to a character in a whole universe created by George Miller, people keep clowning on him calling him the " happy feet and babe" director forgetting the fact that he has s the one who made the whole mad max franchise, the Mel Gibson ones and fury road , so watching furiousa it's exactly what the title says , you're watching a Mad Max saga , not a sequel to fury road
You're not watching a "Mad Max Saga" - you're watching a "Furiosa Saga". This film has nothing whatsoever to do with the character of Mad Max. Another good title would have been "Furiosa: a WASTELAND SAGA". Including Max's name in it is just bizarre. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Furiosa character and can't wait to see it tomorrow - I'm just saying, calling it a "Mad Max" saga makes no sense.
@@redadamearthit probably makes sense once you realise they’re going to build off of it hence why furiosa max meet in fury road and they’re probably do a sequel to that.
When the visuals make you not believe the stakes of the movie, they are more than a nitpick. Fury Road felt like a real desert vehicle battle. This looks like actors in front of a greenscreen. Fury Road with Furiosa's FX would not be the same movie
You're not entirely wrong, but the two possible options weren't Furiosa with CGI or Furiosa with practical effects. The options were Furiosa with CGI or no movie at all. And I'll take the movie please
@joshgiannini1804 the problem isn't that the movie uses CGI, it's that the CGI/set extension looks pretty bad to the point of being immersion breaking.
It's interesting to see these movies compared. That's not how I look at these 2 films. The most remarkable achievement of this se/prequel is that it makes Fury Road more beautiful.
The use VFX sequence & background green screens are hit or miss like in very uncanny Robert Rodriguez prod vfx team (except for Alita Battle Angel) The story is pretty solid letting the world building lore, to be the drivers sit.
Furiosa is awesome. i think its foolish to get into direct comparisons between Furiosa and Fury Road. seriously, consider the VAST distinctions between 'the Road Warrior' and 'Beyond Thunderdome' -very different in style and unapologetic differences in the world building with the former being more grit and the latter being more "goonies on acid". ...and just like Fury Road/Furiosa, i have plenty of room to enjoy both as related, but pretty different films. its just mostly too bad (and a tragedy) that the sheeple of America went to see the Garfield movie instead and probably robbed us fans of a (probably?) final installment with Tom Hardy as Max in the "the wasteland"...
@@va1354 they didn't compare it to Fury Road, you did. Obviously the effects in this movie aren't as good as in Fury Road but that movie was mostly practical so it isn't surprising at all especially considering the scale of this movie.
@@va1354 The effects were fine. It's a already a very stylized fantasy world. Obviously the fire wasn't real. Obviously that tower didn't actually crash down, but I was never taken out of the movie and the effects were always telling the story.

Two of the best screams in film: Night Owl in Watchmen, responding to Rorschach's death; and Ethan Hawke, when he and his brother are battling the devolved vampire in Daybreakers.
cant agree more, i DO wish it was like Fury Road cuz i didnt get to watch it in Theaters when it came out. Still wow, its been a long time since a Villain was genuinely evil that the ending just made it all worth it
It's unfortunate, but it bears repeating: 90% of the CGI in hollywood nowadays isn't done by the same professionals who brought to life movies like Fury Road a decade ago. The vast (and I mean VAST) is done by outsourced and underpaid Indian or Bangaladeshi VFX workers, and it shows in the quality. In Furiosa's case the VFX was done by a company called DNEG, which merged with an Indian firm in 2014.
That explains a lot because CGI in Bollywood movies look dogshit, like actual cartoon compared to high budget Hollywood productions, but the gap is closing now. But CGI in Furiosa isn't that bad. It's not Marvel bad.
I find the nearly spiritual reaction you described having to Fury Road interesting. Although I didn’t think there was anything at all wrong with it, I found it the most unmemorable of all the Mad Max movies so far. It kind of ended my desire to watch any further MM films. The fact that Anya Taylor-Joy is in the new one is the only thing that made me think I might give it a chance.
I'm just glad that they show the fullnes of Gastown and the Bullet Farm. I've been wanting to see it up close ever since Furiosa swerved left in Fury Road. The People Eater and The the Bullet Farmer (R.I.P.) had a more prominent role in the story, although secondary villains along with Immortan Joe, is still a great addition to the backstory.
Yup I rewatched Fury Road the day after I saw Furiosa and for me Furiosa is just the better movie. Fury Road is still great but the character and world building of Furiosa make it better for me.
Funny enough, George Miller talks about these two different styles. He figured those that loved fury road so much wouldn't like furiosa as much, and vice versa. Both are good. But the way the world works and is presented so well in fury road, it's remarkable how we are thrown into it all and can still follow without having to understand everything. I enjoyed Furiosa too though
I LOVE this guy, he makes me shiver in physical pain whenever he talks about a film, because I'm not able to watch it IMMEDIATELY, I love the anguish he makes me feel as I build hype over the movies I'm about to watch, sometimes the movie is not that good, but this adrenaline boost I feel with his descriptions and reviews just makes me impatiently excited
Ok this has me so hyped now. I LOVED Fury Road and feel like I had a similar viewing experience in 2015. Happy to hear from a fan that this was a good sequel/prequel!
I thought it was a great film. It dragged on near the end, which made the movie peak at 2 hours 30 min. But I loved it! I thought the acting was great. Not a lot of talk about Praetorian Jack, but I loved his character. Dementius was played so well by Chris Hemsworth. Excellent film!
I went in the wrong room (that was also showing Furiosa) without realizing it. (I was a little late and I assumed it was the opening scene.) So I saw the last hour of the film first, I was so pissed! But it's a testament to this movie's structure that you can pop in at any moment and assume "oh I guess it starts in media res."
The unfortunate reality of the visual effects industry right now is that most of its artists are overworked for not nearly enough compensation. I think Furiosa is a casualty of it.
The worst thing about this movie is that the version of the Man who Sold the World that was in one of the trailers, didn’t appear in the soundtrack. I want that track.
I really enjoyed the movie. I saw Furiosa twice and really liked what you liked. I guess I hadn’t thought a lot much about the cruddy CGI because I kept just appreciating the story so much. It felt so super detailed in so many interesting ways. The Spy Kids, though? Fair.
One interesting aspect of Furiosa that i loved was that while it isnt better than Fury Road, it makes Fury Road better. Fury Road is literally a better movie now. Really impressive stuff

When was the last time you watched Fury Road? There is a LOT more CGI than you probably think
Can’t wait to do a double feature with this and Garfield and call it Gariosa.

Furiosa was a great film. Very fun. So weird that the internet is being contrarian on this one. Like, stop being miserable.
It was ass
Long Rant incoming:
Not really.
*Scowl* "Here have some food." *Scowl*
And the ending was just so disappointing. Furiosa just gets superpowers after she loses her arm.
Totally agree. People are just pathetic.
People have unrealistic expectations. Fury Road was lightning in a bottle, a follow up just as good would have been impossible after 9 years of production hell. Furiosa ended being a far better film than I thought it would be, and it's a shame that we'll likely never see a follow up to the mad max world.
My thoughts exactly
I find Dr. Dementus like a peak dark humor, condisering that Chris few years back discoverd that he have gene and high risk of dementia...
furiosa and fury road reached a rare point in prequel production that they enhance each other after watching the other one. And that is something not all directors can say they achieved
I got introduced to Mad Max by watching Furiosa first, I went crazy for it. Then I went and watched Fury Road and the added background information I had prior to watching it for the first time made it *chefs kiss*
I auditioned for Furiosa, for Sad Eyes. Was gutted I didn't get it. Such a cool film.

I hope you enjoyed it. I certainly checked my expectations and still thought it was very good. I think, if this was the first "mad max" film to ever come out, we actually would've been blown away. It's still a great film on its own, just isn't what fury road was: a masterpiece.
How was is it? I seen it too I give it 10/10 new tone of movie for me
You liked it?
The CGI would be begter if they just paid the artists better and gave them more time to do a quality job
@@Zackadeles at least giving them more time to do the job should make it, often these houses are swamped with projects with little time to make them all

I have no idea why people are so crazy about actions. Furiosa had a ton of action scenes and on top of that the storyline is like 100 times better.
I agree. This movie improves on CGI action and even story. Fury Road was good but you're missing the backstory on the characters. Here it fleshes in her story so you care for her. They also need to do a movie on mad Max himself.
Well said I fully agree.
I enjoyed Furiosa but it was definitely a harder watch than fury road. A lot of suffering in this one, but the lows do get balanced out with some good highs too. Furiosa on the warpath as an angle of vengeance in the black car was awesome to behold.
"This movie makes Fury Road better."
Thank you! I saw Furiosa yesterday and I've been struggling to articulate my thoughts as succinctly as you have in a single sentence!
The movie didn't had the business of being so: Perfect, insane, beautiful, good, mad.
The bad CGI is apparent in the trailer. The issue for me is that it just doesn't look like cars and building falling have any mass. They move in unnatural ways that your brain picks up as them having no real physical weight so it eliminates the real emotional weight.
this is a perfect description of how i felt watching the trailer!
Having watched it, i honestly think it wasn’t that bad. I was hesitant to go because of the CGI but while it was noticeable occasionally it never detracted from the experience, for me atleast. Highly recommend it
See it in a good theater
@@thijmenjankoksame. It didn't bother me in the slightest when I saw it yesterday, despite being initially a bit worried by the trailer.

This is SUCH. a fantastic movie!
After seeing what Ayla Browne did here, I eagerly await her portrayal of Maria in Sonic 3
Agreed
Furiosa felt like a classic Mad Max. I grew up on the originals. This was much more of world examination and explanation with furiosa's story as a through line. I love that Miller made a completely different film in the mad max world other than just trying to repeat fury roads' success
yeah, i felt the same way too. fury road was beautiful, but since i watched the original trio first, it didn't stick with me as much as it did to others, especially since no mel gibson. people hating furiosa are simply those who only grew up on fury road.

Good stuff as always, Karsten!
The weird CGI gives it that nostalgic mad max feel. I think they did it on purpose
Honestly i disagree about the action, i actually thought it was really good, on par with fury road
being a cross between mandy and fury road … i am infinitely more intrigued than i was before
Great video! Love your writing, balancing multiple tones and critiques without pooping on things is hard. Great job!
this is a prequel to a character in a whole universe created by George Miller, people keep clowning on him calling him the " happy feet and babe" director forgetting the fact that he has s the one who made the whole mad max franchise, the Mel Gibson ones and fury road , so watching furiousa it's exactly what the title says , you're watching a Mad Max saga , not a sequel to fury road
Is this satire
You're not watching a "Mad Max Saga" - you're watching a "Furiosa Saga". This film has nothing whatsoever to do with the character of Mad Max. Another good title would have been "Furiosa: a WASTELAND SAGA". Including Max's name in it is just bizarre. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Furiosa character and can't wait to see it tomorrow - I'm just saying, calling it a "Mad Max" saga makes no sense.
It has nothing to do with the characters but got everything to do with the world that those characters live in , WTF is so hard to understand?!
@@afroahmed3989 i understand your point and agree but you need to calm down
@@redadamearthit probably makes sense once you realise they’re going to build off of it hence why furiosa max meet in fury road and they’re probably do a sequel to that.
When the visuals make you not believe the stakes of the movie, they are more than a nitpick. Fury Road felt like a real desert vehicle battle. This looks like actors in front of a greenscreen. Fury Road with Furiosa's FX would not be the same movie
fury road relied on that visceral intensity MUCH more than furiosa does in order to convey its narrative and stakes to be fair
You're not entirely wrong, but the two possible options weren't Furiosa with CGI or Furiosa with practical effects. The options were Furiosa with CGI or no movie at all. And I'll take the movie please
You definitely haven't watched furiosa.
@joshgiannini1804 the problem isn't that the movie uses CGI, it's that the CGI/set extension looks pretty bad to the point of being immersion breaking.
Its really not that bad. Its not gonna take you out of it. It still is MUCH better than most Blockbusters today
It's interesting to see these movies compared. That's not how I look at these 2 films. The most remarkable achievement of this se/prequel is that it makes Fury Road more beautiful.
The use VFX sequence & background green screens are hit or miss like in very uncanny Robert Rodriguez prod vfx team (except for Alita Battle Angel)
The story is pretty solid letting the world building lore, to be the drivers sit.
My god this movie was glorious. I love the Mad Max Saga

Still wow, its been a long time since a Villain was genuinely evil that the ending just made it all worth it
Kris was very good in his role ! Couldn’t agree more ! Such a strong presence, and he definitely nailed the character
This is the thing with CGI: if the story is good, who gives a shit. Godzilla Minus One is the best example of this
Kinda sad the movie did so badly at the box office. It deserves to be seen. And now we may not get to the see Mad Max Wasteland.
Watching it tomo, cannot wait!!!

@@darinherrick9224That's what I thought too!
The unfortunate reality of the visual effects industry right now is that most of its artists are overworked for not nearly enough compensation. I think Furiosa is a casualty of it.
