We Like The New X1, But Avoid This Model (BMW X1 2023 Review: xDrive20i M Sport)

  • We test the new BMW X1 xDrive20i M Sport, which is the most expensive way to spec an X1 until the iX1 arrives - and we find the cheaper base model is better.
    The BMW X1 is a small luxury SUV that has just been renewed for a third generation. It is available with a range of petrol engines or fully electric power in the iX1. We have already tested the base model X1 sDrive18i three-cylinder (and liked it), but you don’t get quite the same pleasure from the X1 xDrive20i M Sport, as Chasing Cars deputy editor Curt Dupriez identifies.
    The BMW X1 competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Jaguar E-Pace, Lexus NX, Range Rover Evoque, Volvo XC40 and other small luxury crossovers.
    As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the BMW X1.

    I really don't understand how, for all car manufacturers, the "doesn't kill pedestrians and cyclists" feature is a premium add on a package. For a vehicle weighing 1800kg (2000 kg as an EV) being able to see, stop and swerve to avoid the driver being charged with "causing death by careless driving" would seem mandatory. Maybe governments should mandate it the way they had to do with airbags and ABS

    18i is way too slow, 20i is acceptable performance (but not fast). The Cupra Ateca and Formentor that I also test drove had nicer performance but I disliked the interiors and infotainment.
    I think the real sweet point is not 18i nor 20i M Sport. The sweet spot is base 20i with the X-Line package. Surprisingly it looks much better than the M Sport body kit. It has softer riding 19s that still look very good.
    I think xDrive20i, enhancement pack, mocha leather and storm grey are what I will go for. Oyster looks fantastic but constantly cleaning off blue jean stains is too much effort.

    I ordered the 2.0l back in November and expect a delivery of the end of March. I deliberately DIDN'T buy the M-Sport package, as this simply isn't a sporty car. It will be sitting next to an M140i and Megane RS, (plus the bikes) so it doens't need to be.
    I got the premium pack and the 20 inch wheels, but what I don't like now is the one pack option that BMW has moved to as opposed to ticking the exact options I wanted. I would like to have had the paddle option on the steering wheel but as I didn't get the M-Sport pack (which looks back in my opinion) I couldn't get that or the adaptive suspension.
    I am looking forward to it arriving in Utah Orange with the Mocha LEATHER not sensatek which is getting all the press, but it is in no way a sports car. It should be nice but the iDrive controller missing is a bummer. Incidentally it is not called iDrive 8 in these. It is BMW's 8th generation driver interface.
    I"ll give a report when it finally arrives 🙂

    iDrive 8 is unbearable imo. No physical buttons, no rotary controller, trying to switch radio stations, heating controls, lane departure, seat heating, everything else while driving is a pain. Dont ask me to use voice control...no interest in talking to my cars. The centre floating console has a usless storage compartment and it opens up the wrong way for right hand drive cars. Also , you need to be a contortionist to retrieve anything from the underneath of the console. Had an iX1 for 3months....had to give it back , couldnt put up with it. C'mon BMW, bring back the idrive7 and the rotary dial

    Test drove this spec for an hour or so recently. Despite being a newer design than our 2017 G01 X3 30D, it feels downmarket for over $70k on road. Part time AWD is never a good thing compared to the X3's full time AWD with its variable rear bias. The X1 is hardly quick. Our X3 has more than double the torque at 620Nm, with a 0-100 sprint a full 2 seconds faster. The diesel X3 is good for sub 6L/100Km on the highway although the higher price of diesel remains an issue, The new X1's front sports seats are too tight for a typical Aussie and the lack of available lumbar adjustment was a deal killer, along with deletion of the iDrive controller. I find I rarely use the X3's touch screen as there is always a button or controller alternative for any action. None of this matters to BMW as they will sell every one they can get, despite the 4-6 month current wait time.

    • @prosserd
      @prosserd ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not reasonable at all to expect an entry level priced BMW to match up to a premium priced BMW. They're not competing for the same buyers especially when you consider budget. You got yours in 2017 and prices have moved up significantly. You're looking at $110k driveaway for an X3 30D these days and an X1 is around $40k less driveaway so you should not expect it to match up in terms of engine performance and other areas - it's not surprising at all that it doesn't match up on speed - it's not supposed to. High performance goes to their premium priced vehicles not the entry level.
      I test drove it also and being 6'2" I found the seats very comfortable and not tight at all (and I'm no string bean).
      You don't really need the iDrive controller either as the voice commands worked pretty well. It's a bit of paradigm shift to switch to voice commands but given they might be changing the laws soon relating to using infotainment screens while operating a motor vehicle it might be better to learn to use voice control instead of iDrive. I speak quite clearly so I'm not sure if voice commands work well for everyone especially the Scottish.

    • @johnoneill1011
      @johnoneill1011 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@prosserd Agree X1 and X3 are in different price segments, although now much closer in space and load capacity. The X3 has a wide range of voice commands, but to use them the entertainment system gets muted. Not viable if you love your music, are talking to a passenger, are on a phone call, listening to the news, the baby is sleeping or the kids are arguing . Programmable buttons are simpler and non intrusive. If the law prohibits using the BMW's touch screen, as it does a mobile phone screen even for music or navigation, I guess BMW will have to revert to an iDrive controller.

    I'm in the States and just drove one. Feels cheap inside (Lots of plastic) and what were they thinking with those TINY cruise control buttons on the steering wheel? My Audis (A6 TDI) have that on a stalk (Much easier rather than fiddling with a tiny plastic switch). On the plus side, I would buy it for the professional driver assistance package. The lane assist works much better on an X5 I drove and keeps you centered. The current generation of lane keep assist in BMW is horrible where KIA is excels in camera technology,. The professional package is pretty sweet. Does anyone know if the part time AWD is as good in the snow? I do a ton of snow driving and need the absolute best coming from Audi.
