- Not a stunt for anyone with a fear of heights, this showdown in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (1987) was a fist fight on a cargo net hanging from the back of a Hercules. High above the Mojave Desert, stunt performers BJ Worth (Bond) and Jake Lombard (Necros) duked it out hanging from a 1500-pound net flying at 100 knots and 6,500 feet. A safety man was on standby ready to leap out and deploy specially disguised parachutes.
One of my all-time favorite Bond scenes. It doesn't matter how many times I see this, I'm always on edge and the music is simply brilliant.

The music in this scene is so brilliant. What any music in a Bond movie should be like.
A masterpiece of a score, maybe the best by the great late John Barry. So superior to Thomas Newman's horrible score for the dismal Spectre.

Adore this scene, Dalton is brilliant. You can clearly see where Uncharted 3 got its inspiration.
I thought that scene looked familiar. Just really wish that game wasn't so dam frustrating.
Bruce Snow That was actually my first thought when I watched this. Not too surprising that Uncharted took inspiration from Bond, though.
Lol and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation director said he was inspired by Uncharted 3, so it’s a chain of inspirations, maybe Rogue Nation’s plane scene will inspire a future movie/game/tv show

Can we give some extra kudos to Maryam D'Abo in this movie? She brilliantly plays a character who is clearly *completely out of her depth* yet still saves Bond.
She grows up a lot over the course of this movie. That's what she's one of my favorites: she really seems to have benefitted from knowing Bond, even if it was only for a short while.
I'm not sure she necessarily was out if her depth. She was brilliant in sine ways. She's actually putting some interesting spins on tye stereotypical blonde bimbo as being unfair to her.

- almost crashed the plane in the mountain in front of her...
I love the special effects in this sequence. In the close up on the actor's faces, the actors are in front of model of the ground or the mountain. It gives you a better image than CGI.
ActionCom For some reason, the aircraft is sometimes a Hercules and sometimes a Transall (when the guys fight at the Cargo hatch)
@@YDDES This is something they do on James Bond Productions. They get multiple airplanes to help with filming. For the mini jet in Octopussy, They had anothe jet that was similar but was four times as big called a Hawker Siddeley 127. They used it for longer shots so it was easier to see it was Bond's plane in the distance.
Beat me to it. Considering blue screen/rear projection was still pretty shoddy in this era, the modelling was a fantastic way to sell the effect. Plus Dalton did a lot more of his own stunts, selling the authenticity.
Much like Timothy Dalton is the most underrated Bond, Necros is the most underrated henchman.
Yeah, he may not be as memorable as Jaws or Oddjob, but he’s not supposed to be. He’s an absolutely ruthless assassin who can blend in before killing with absolute efficiency. The guy disguised himself as a milkman and successfully kidnapped a defector from heavily guarded British safehouse.
This fight was the matchup building all movie, and brings to mind the Red Grant fight in From Russia with Love. A brutal fight to the death between two professional killers at the top of their game. And boy, did it deliver.
So give more recognition to Necros, one of the most worthy adversaries in the Bond canon. He didn’t need a flashy gimmick, he was just great at what he did.
plus when he snuffed it I remember everyone watching was like, "good." That's a good villain right there.
Dalton pavied the way for a modern day Daniel Craig bond when you reflect on the bond franchise Dalton was ahead of his time very much the underrated bond

@@tcaudiobooks737 Agreed. Craig is so overrated. Looks nothing like James Bond and has just become super robotic, angry and miserable. He's even just plain stiff and awkward in the role. They need to go back to a tall dark and handsome 007, not fairly short, blonde and chavvy.
Cubby Broccoli chose Dalton over several actors including Brosnin/ chosen later
and Dalton's Bond had weakness n emotive constrained well expressed.
Daniel Craig has stated that he emulates the most bond from Dalton.

Great scene. I think this actor is, in a lot of ways, more like the Bond of the books. He's a tad more emotional than the other screen versions, and, possibly, more vulnerable.
Pierce Brosnan could play the role with more vulnerability as well including getting hurt and could his shock and disbelief when sees Alec in Goldeneye as comes out of by the statues as the head of Janus crime Syndicate. Brosnan’s Bond drinking heavily after knowing Paris was married to Elliot Carver and attacked by Elliots men as well finding Paris dead could see the saddened look on his face. Lazenbys Bond was vulnerable to as let Tracy into his life and wanted to get married and settle down with her before her death on their wedding day by Bonds nemesis Ernst Starvo Blofeld.
Dalton's Bond is great!!! Especially ''The living daylights'' is one of my most favorite Bond films!!!!!!!

Let's appreciate what's happening here.
Bond is fighting a professional killer, while hanging for dear life on a cargo net, that is failing, outside of an airplane with a ticking bomb on board which is being piloted by someone who has NO experience with planes.
THAT is how you do an action sequence.
A professional killer vs. a professional spy.
I think he left acting too. Now owns and runs a professional ballet dancing school in london.
This is really one of the most terrifying fight scenes I ever saw on film: this would have left ME traumatized, even if I won.
3 years later, he fight Cliff on the German Airship for the rocket, but he blew up and fell right near the Hollywood signs.

I won’t disagree, why He held onto Bond’s Boot baffled Me. When Bond was cutting the Laces, Necros should’ve grabbed onto the Netting...He might’ve lived a little longer...

He gave us a real treat before the end.
At least Barry went out on a high with both 'A View To A Kill' and even more so 'The Living Daylights'. Barry had been intermittent as composer starting with Roger Moore's 'Live And Let Die'.
At least he went on to win an Oscar for Dances With Wolves.

James Bond: He got the boot.
In terms of real personal danger to Bond, few moments in the Bond series can top this one for sheer danger. There's no gadgets to the rescue, no help from an ally, he has absolute no control over anything, especially when the blond woman opens the back door on the plane & then starts tilting the plane upwards steeply. The sheer panic in Bond as he lunges for the net as he, Necros & the drugs all start to slip out of the plane is spine tingling. Not only does he have to hang on for dear life, he has to kill Necros within about a minute and get back into plane in order to make sure the bomb is off the plane or to potentially defuse the bomb if it hasn't slipped out of the plane. All this while the net is hanging by an ever increasingly frayed rope which is coming apart. But there's more. Necros doesn't know there is a bomb so all he's concentrated on getting Bond regardless of however long it takes hence him grabbing onto Bond's leg. Imagine the panic Bond must be feeling when Necros won't let go of his leg when the bomb is potentially ticking away about to explode.

Add to that, Necros' cries for mercy in order to distract Bond. It's like we're meant to feel sorry for Necros, but then we remember the innocent people he killed earlier in the movie. Plus, he's dealing with Bond who KILLS people. No wonder Bond won't show mercy.

It's truly a shame that Timothy Dalton is the most underrated Bond..... And his films, particularly LICENCE TO KILL is one the most underrated Bond-film along with OCTOPUSSY..... Timothy Dalton was a great Bond and both of his films were fantastic.....

I totally agree, rewatching Octopussy I adored its amazing action, practically on par with The Living Daylights. When you think about it, the Octopussy plane sequence (in the climax) is a precursor to The Living Daylights plane sequence, which did it on a bigger scale.
The villian was murdered and the bomb desconected, well done Bond ! Thank you, excellent work. Me.
This was an amazing Bond sequence. I was astonished by it when I saw the film the first time; there was nothing in the trailers or ads that had a hint of this sequence. It’s already an intense action sequence in an unusual situation, but the director understood suspense. Bond VS Necros at 10,000 feet was cool enough, but cutting to the bomb was almost Hitchcockian.
Necro’s theme of “Where Has Everybody Gone” by the Pretenders has a fabulous remix for this sequence. Seeing him break down and beg for his life was fun. I know people wonder why he didn’t grab the net, but the fact is, people who are afraid tend to make poor decisions.
Best Bond movie sub-boss fight. This whole movie wins in score and editing which are enhanced by the dynamite performances of everyone involved. True perfection.

Necros hold the boot and fall to death and later bond Rocket explode and fall to death.
Dalton's Bond movies were great. This was more of an adventure than LTK but that one was gritty, intense and thrilling too. Wish he made more movies if it wasn't for the wait for GoldenEye. Dalton was better than Brosnan imo.

Love how he kept hold of the shoe after he fell outta the plane. Like it was a parachute or something.

Necros wouldn't be able to transfer one hand to the net without the other one slipping, and he would have been too beaten up to hold on with one hand.
Trying to transfer both hands at once is silly for obvious reasons.
And also he was trying to hinder Bond as much as he could - letting him go and grabbing the net would have let Bond kick him till he fell.
Listen up 007 , as you may very well need this invention for your next mission. I call it

Excellent suspenseful fight to the death. Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby are the best non Connery Bonds.
Just realised that Necros was doomed anyway. Even if he succeeded in killing Bond and getting back on the plane, he didn't know about the bomb, and would have died in about a minute. Unless he heard the ticking and got rid of the bomb in time, which is unlikely.
Anyway, this fight is one of the peaks of the entire 25-film-franchise. Every time I watch it I get so tense that I grab my chair with my hands, the same way they hold on to that net!

Do it. The Living Daylights is one of the most underrated in the series, and Licence to Kill is definitely the most underrated in the series.
At 2:32 there’s a continuity error. You can still see Necros falling. He’s much higher up than he was last shown to be.

This fight and the train fight in "From Russia with love" are the best among all fight scenes in bond films.Sir Sean Connery apart, Timothy Dalton is the best Bond.Pity he didn't do msny films.
Dalton is a huge fan of the Fleming novels and you can tell in his portrayal of the character. Before Daniel Craig mostly in Casino Royale he was to first actor to actually portray the character pin point accurate to the novels. Its just a real shame the audience and most of the critics at the time were far too used to Roger Moore's silliness and cheesy portrayal of the character. In saying that however both The Living Daylights and License to Kill have been getting lots of praise in recent years mainly because of how similar they are to the Craig films. Imo he is either the 2nd or 3rd best Bond after Daniel Craig. Give it or take 2nd or 3rd is between him and Sean Connery.

A truly dangerous stunt, especially when all the heroin bags fly away as the net is all over the place. Notice they don't show Bond getting back in the plane. I'd love to know how he did it.

What are you talking about?? He got in by letting the rushing air throw the rope net up and down until there was enough momentum to land on the cargo ramp.
Thinking about it Necros pretty much sealed his doom getting that knife out

I just realised that at 2.32 the stuntman doubling for Necros can be seen through the cargo net, as Necros is falling and spinning away from the plane. I've always wondered how many flights this scene required to cover all the necessary angles and shots.
Missed opportunity to have the timer stop at 0:07, like in Goldfinger.
Although in the original edit of Goldfinger, the timer stopped at 0:03, and the dialogue backs that up.

The net's pretty flimsy at the bottom, and Bond had already cut away part of it. It likely wouldn't hold him, and even if he grabbed a strand, one kick from Bond, and he's also down.

Bond would’ve likely kicked him or stabbed him, without the opium the net would’ve been very unstable also… that’s my best guess
Plus I feel like as an assassin in a desperate situation, he’d rather kill both of them rather than risk Bond living
