25 years ago, I thought "man, wouldn't that be awesome to do". 15 years ago, "man, this is going to make a great story for my future kids". You see folks, I was a tank driver. I've basically lived this scene.
Bond sets an excellent example for civic minded individuals everywhere in this sequence, as he widens a narrow alleyway so trucks can pass through, puts out a car fire by kindly moving it into the river, generously clears the roadway of a dangerous obstruction caused by the irresponsible driving of others and finally creates a striking impromptu piece of street art by relocating a statue. Bravo!
Thank God he fixed his tie- he's out there representing Her Majesty after all! It's one thing to level half of St.Petersburg but quite another to do it improperly dressed.
Me too. My dad was pals with a beamer dealer,he gave my parents sneak peak passes. My dad worked late so i got his pass and went with my mom on a school night to see goldeneye. It was awesome.

When I was a young tank driver, an old man hit our tank, trying to pass us while we were coming back from training. Bent one part on the side of our tank. He had a hunk of metal on wheels. Twisted metal. Slamming into a tree after bouncing off of us is what stopped him. We hardly felt shit. Old man didn't have a scratch on him. Imagine what he told his insurance.
Metal tracks are not for paved surfaces they don't provide any grip even more so if they have grousers attached to the tracks they slide all over the place on paved surfaces.
He said once he'll only ever direct a bond film if it's something different. Interestingly he directed GoldenEye and Casino Royale both titles completely refreshed the bond franchise each time. Both are awesome bond films both were Martin Campbell.

Campbell also did the same thing with Brosnan. If you watch any behind the scenes footage of him directing, he gives immense focus and energy to everything. He even screams "ACTION!!" like a drill sergeant. Both of his Bond movies are indeed two of the very best. Licence to Kill and Goldeneye are my joint top 2 of all time, and Casino Royale isn't far behind them, but I just felt it was slightly held back by some typical Purvis & Wade lame and cheesy elements and too bloated with forced in action sequences. Daniel Craig during the early scenes gambling in the Bahamas and seducing the crook's wife are, in my view, the most like James Bond that Craig has ever seemed. His later movies in particular he just became more and more dull, angry, brooding and robotic - even plain stiff and awkward in the role.
The funniest part of this scene for me is poor Ourumov's increasingly desperate drinking as the chase progresses. His expression is undeniably one of utter disbelief and indignant fury as he constantly looks out the back window at his pursuer, who somehow not only escaped what he must have assumed was certain death at the hands of the soldiers swarming the base, not only casually stole a goddamn tank from the parking lot on his way out, but also apparently knows how to drive the thing like an absolute Boss. Most people who even know how to drive a tank at all would probably end up plowing through civilians left and right in order to keep up with the unexpectedly swift driver who happens to be behind the wheel of his chosen getaway car, but Bond is outright styling on them by accomplishing this feat without so much as tarnishing his impeccable hair or his suit, let alone causing any more damage to the city than absolutely necessary or discernibly hurting anyone (the sole exception being the mistake* at 3:16.) From the viewer's perspective, this scene is a delicious action set piece. For Bond, it's little more than just another day on the job. For one Russian General, it's four minutes of his worst nightmare come to life and that flask of vodka is the only thing keeping him from serving himself a lead cocktail out of spite at the sheer absurdity of the situation. (*When I say mistake I mean from the director/editor's perspective. We know the director intended to show that nobody was crushed by the tank during the chase, so despite the previous shot unfortunately being contrary to that I'm gonna say the canon is that the driver survived somehow. Maybe he squeezed his way into the passenger side at the last moment and managed to dodge the tank's treads by the skin of his teeth. Maybe he's actually just magic? Idk, at the end of the day it's not important to the scene.)
This comment and the analysis contained therein are the reason I continue to enjoy TH-cam as my preferred conduit for famous film scenes. If I was in Ourumov's boots in that situation I would also be chugging that flask like there was no tomorrow.
Actually tanks dont have keys. I dont know about russian ones specifically, but British ones need a PIN code for power to come on IIRC, just to avoid scrambling for the keys in an emergency.
Russia actually has a history of extreme alcoholism that started with the first Tzars and they never managed to get truly rid off. It´s everywhere, from the normal labourer to military men and politicians. It´s one of the greatest proofs that alcohol, despite it´s acceptance by the vast majority of the human population, is destructive to both the consumers and the society they live in if it´s not kept in check.

My three favorite parts of this iconic scene. 1-Bond using the tank to widen the ally 2-Everyone backing up down the road as Bond comes towards them. 3-The villain drinking from his flask more and more as they fail to lose Bond and the tank.
George Lazenby has been (rightly) rehabilitated, but Pierce Brosnan is the most underrated of all the Bonds. He had the looks, the style, the charisma and a sudden switch to a cold eyed lethality when he had to get medieval on some unfortunate goon. And in this tank chase he had one of the best Bond chases of all time. The only thing he didn’t have were credible scripts, especially in the last couple of his Bond films. But that’s fault of the writers and producers, not Brosnan.
He's not underrated at all. It's just that people always have preferences. I liked Timothy Dalton better than Brosnan, but I still like Pierce. Probably most people do but prefer another overall. I don't think he's underrated at all.
I like that part as it implies that he's not driven a tank before but he is so good that he's learning rapidly as he goes. Then he nails the next power slide
The world saw that.beautiful city and I'm grateful, despite the destruction, it looked stunning and made for spectacular and unusual car chase as only Bond films can do. I hope they paid for the damage though.

I love the section from 1:01 in the alley, Natalya has this grin on her face the entire way watching Bond smash through the building as if to say 'you beautiful mad bastard you, James!'
I think it's supposed to be a concerned grimace, as if to say "Jesus Christ, James. That was a one hundred year old building you just bulldozed. What exactly were planning on doing when you catch us? I think the PIT manoeuvre is a little out of the question."

This is it, this is my favorite Bond scene from my childhood. When that tank came bursting through that wall, my 6-year-old mind exploded. It was, up until that point, the coolest thing I’d ever seen.
When I first saw this, I looked at Bond looking at the Tank and I was like "He is NOT thinking...." and then *BAM!* through the wall and I was like "OH MY GOD!!!" lol
That must have been quite a difficult shot to time, as the tank driver wouldn't have been able to see when the car had rounded the corner - leave it too late, and the car would be out of shot. Too early, and he'd have either driven over it or brought the wall down on it.
I love how they strategically played the James Bond theme at this section of the movie. Let you know you're not just watching another Pierce Brosnan flick. You're watching "Bond...James Bond."
There was a certain amount of controversy about that. The rest of the score was by Eric Serra and sounded completely different - it was all breakbeats and samples - but the producers insisted there had to be at least one burst of the traditional Bond theme, so another composer was brought in to arrange it.
@@AshleyPomeroy GoldenEye has such a weird soundtrack ranging from fantastic to terrible throughout the film. I love the distinctive soft gong sound and the music during the final battle is very good. The rest is awful though such as that 70s porno style thing that plays during the Monte Carlo car chase and that awful song that hits for the closing credits. The lack of Bond theme is also quite noticeable. I think it only plays during this scene in the whole film and even then it does not crescendo - it just sort of teases and then fizzles out. Love GoldenEye though.
And this is why Goldeneye is my favorite bond film. Sure, Brosnan isn't everyone's Bond, but this is the movie where videogame logic really takes mainstage. I mean come on, the tank even has the name of a videogame dev studio written on it. It's too perfect.
This scene is by far my most favourite Bond scene of all time. Golden Eye was a masterpiece! An amazing action packed and well executed movie. Golden Eye and Casino Royale are my two most favourite Bond movies.
And imagine you guys, that all these were shot in an open studio in England, that was built, to resemble Saint Petersburg! Just look at the incredible job they did! I have been to Saint Petersburg before, and I can assure you, that it looks exactly the same! It's incredible what directors, and crew can achieve, if they really put their souls, backs, and will, into it!
I believe part was actually shot in st Petersburg. But the local government demanded more money, and they were held up by the Mafia who stole their cameras, and they decided to pack up filming, although you can still see at least some of the shots are from st Petersburg
@@Chris-Weaver Big action sequences like this are usually storyboarded in advance by the director. When you're driving a tank through a building, you only get one opportunity to get the right shots.

But every shot has to be very carefully blocked so it *looks* like the tank is ploughing through real buildings, and the spatial relationship between those prop building facades has to match the rest of the chase, so all the cuts make sense. It will all have been planned out very carefully in advance, so the director absolutely deserves credit.

Everything about this scene is just so perfectly done! Not only did they manage to find a way to have the tank crash through 2 structures, they got Bond to drift in the damn thing!
I remember watching documentary about this movie... The drift was heavily provoked. It turned out that contrary to scriptwrither's imagination, the tank would turn like a sports car.

Perrier wasn't there first choice either. The producers tried to get other famous beverages but they all said no because Bond drives a tank through the cans.

George Lazenby has been (rightly) rehabilitated, but Pierce Brosnan is the most underrated of all the Bonds.
He had the looks, the style, the charisma and a sudden switch to a cold eyed lethality when he had to get medieval on some unfortunate goon. And in this tank chase he had one of the best Bond chases of all time.
The only thing he didn’t have were credible scripts, especially in the last couple of his Bond films. But that’s fault of the writers and producers, not Brosnan.
He's not underrated at all. It's just that people always have preferences. I liked Timothy Dalton better than Brosnan, but I still like Pierce. Probably most people do but prefer another overall. I don't think he's underrated at all.
Its also one of the few times BOND does the chasing lol

Bond's reaction at 0:22 is classic. Trying to drift a tank for the first time and instead of drifting, turns in the opposite direction.
I like that part as it implies that he's not driven a tank before but he is so good that he's learning rapidly as he goes.

The world saw that.beautiful city and I'm grateful, despite the destruction, it looked stunning and made for spectacular and unusual car chase as only Bond films can do.
I hope they paid for the damage though.

After 6 yrs of Bond’s absence, this was GREAT stuff. I remember I was laughing the whole time while Bond was destroying half the city with that tank.

I love the section from 1:01 in the alley, Natalya has this grin on her face the entire way watching Bond smash through the building as if to say 'you beautiful mad bastard you, James!'
I think it's supposed to be a concerned grimace, as if to say "Jesus Christ, James. That was a one hundred year old building you just bulldozed. What exactly were planning on doing when you catch us? I think the PIT manoeuvre is a little out of the question."
@@rus0004 Good joke! Although even realistically speaking (as much as unrealistic this movie is), when there's not good option, the only good thing to do is to choose just anything that just might lead to unknown that might offer a better situation.
This is it, this is my favorite Bond scene from my childhood. When that tank came bursting through that wall, my 6-year-old mind exploded. It was, up until that point, the coolest thing I’d ever seen.
I must say, driver's expression @0:36 does convey "WE ARE BEING CHASED BY AN EFFING TANK!!!!!!" emotion perfectly.
This was my favorite 007 sequels growing up. Should i say Mr.Brosnan did a remarkable job doing this intense tank chase scene🎥
When I first saw this, I looked at Bond looking at the Tank and I was like "He is NOT thinking...." and then *BAM!* through the wall and I was like "OH MY GOD!!!" lol
That must have been quite a difficult shot to time, as the tank driver wouldn't have been able to see when the car had rounded the corner - leave it too late, and the car would be out of shot. Too early, and he'd have either driven over it or brought the wall down on it.

I love how they strategically played the James Bond theme at this section of the movie. Let you know you're not just watching another Pierce Brosnan flick. You're watching "Bond...James Bond."
There was a certain amount of controversy about that. The rest of the score was by Eric Serra and sounded completely different - it was all breakbeats and samples - but the producers insisted there had to be at least one burst of the traditional Bond theme, so another composer was brought in to arrange it.
@@AshleyPomeroy GoldenEye has such a weird soundtrack ranging from fantastic to terrible throughout the film. I love the distinctive soft gong sound and the music during the final battle is very good. The rest is awful though such as that 70s porno style thing that plays during the Monte Carlo car chase and that awful song that hits for the closing credits. The lack of Bond theme is also quite noticeable. I think it only plays during this scene in the whole film and even then it does not crescendo - it just sort of teases and then fizzles out. Love GoldenEye though.

Wow. This has to be the iconic scene of the film. When I first saw this on TV, I never realized that Bond would look cool chasing someone with a tank.
It's also got one of the best pre-credit sequences as well.
And this is why Goldeneye is my favorite bond film. Sure, Brosnan isn't everyone's Bond, but this is the movie where videogame logic really takes mainstage. I mean come on, the tank even has the name of a videogame dev studio written on it. It's too perfect.
And Goldeneye is still considered one of the best first person shooters of the N64 era as a videogame. So it all worked out great.

When I first saw this scene I thought it was the coolest thing in films ever and made me think nobody will ever play Bond better than Brosnan.

This scene is by far my most favourite Bond scene of all time. Golden Eye was a masterpiece! An amazing action packed and well executed movie.
Golden Eye and Casino Royale are my two most favourite Bond movies.

By far one of the coolest scenes in James Bond history, Goldeneye is a legendary Bond masterpiece
And imagine you guys, that all these were shot in an open studio in England, that was built, to resemble Saint Petersburg! Just look at the incredible job they did! I have been to Saint Petersburg before, and I can assure you, that it looks exactly the same! It's incredible what directors, and crew can achieve, if they really put their souls, backs, and will, into it!
I believe part was actually shot in st Petersburg. But the local government demanded more money, and they were held up by the Mafia who stole their cameras, and they decided to pack up filming, although you can still see at least some of the shots are from st Petersburg

And then the tank was used in a Red Dwarf episode!
The editing in this is a masterclass in storytelling.
So, kudos to the video editor! Guess more than the… director himself.
@@Chris-Weaver Big action sequences like this are usually storyboarded in advance by the director. When you're driving a tank through a building, you only get one opportunity to get the right shots.
@@ravecrab that particular building was part of the set. On error, _maybe_ they were having the capacity to do more takes, in contrast to keeping the budget… low, ofc! 😅
@@Chris-Weaver Well yes, obviously they weren't smashing up real buildings in St Petersburg. But every shot has to be very carefully blocked so it *looks* like the tank is ploughing through real buildings, and the spatial relationship between those prop building facades has to match the rest of the chase, so all the cuts make sense. It will all have been planned out very carefully in advance, so the director absolutely deserves credit.
@@ravecrab w/o the Director, it wouldn't be a… movie! I deeply know that s/he, along with the Editor, work together much of the time. But it's really helpful if the Editor has many such a good shot scenes beforehand, in possession.
That end, adjusting the tie... Best ever Bond will always be Brosnan...

How do you top that? Tomorrow Never Dies jet chase at the opening? The World Is Not Enough's Q-boat or paragliders? Maybe Die Another Day's hovercraft? I don't know.

Everything about this scene is just so perfectly done! Not only did they manage to find a way to have the tank crash through 2 structures, they got Bond to drift in the damn thing!
I remember watching documentary about this movie... The drift was heavily provoked. It turned out that contrary to scriptwrither's imagination, the tank would turn like a sports car.

Perrier wasn't there first choice either. The producers tried to get other famous beverages but they all said no because Bond drives a tank through the cans.
