This was Freddie's dream project. He wrote, sang & produced. He h ad no opera experience, just loved it. They made an album also titled Barcelona. Its wonderful & was a big hit.

Just perfection of how their voices blended and how a diva like her was so spellbound by Freddie! In fact, Montsy said in an interview that while they sang this, she said she saw a tear run down Freddie's cheek. When they are holding hands, you can see in his face and eyes that he knew that would be his last live performance.

I heard that Andre Bocelli was inspired by Freddie's collaboration with Monserrat Caballe to write "Time to Say Goodbye" duet with Sarah Brightman.

I use to avoid opera until Freddie collaborated with Madam Montserrat..
Fabian please give us the wonderful Christmas gift of the entirety of their performances together. If such a treasure doesn’t already exist could you compile their songs?

Can you please react to "Exercises In Free Love?" It was a demo tape that Freddie made for Montserrat. He sings the whole song in opera. I had to listen to it twice because I couldn't believe it was him. A lot of reactors were blown away as well. Thank you! 😉

Well, it's definitely an impressive recording and Freddie Mercury is undoubtedly a talented vocalist but alas an operatic singer he is not. Now, I'm not saying Mercury doesn't sing the song prettily, he just doesn't sing it operatically or classically. If he was to sing it classically, his vocal timbre would have sounded much closer to something like this recording of countertenor Andreas Scholl: th-cam.com/video/Z39KxbbtCC0/w-d-xo.html

It's most definitely a live performance there was more than these two doing this show, everything was live, and Freddie wrote an album for the two of them,he didn't get to hear the title track for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992

It definitely wasn't live (note no microphones). Freddie didn't trust his voice at this point to perform live.

Great reaction! This video is playback. There was a few performances it was not a big tour. This is a great album, it is a typical but great example of Freddie's mixture of genres, composition skills. The title song Barcelona was used as the song of the Olympic Games. This was a pre-event for the Olympic Games in Barcelona. A beautiful song from this album is Ensueno th-cam.com/video/vZ7OLCPsiiE/w-d-xo.html. It is that one song where Freddie went for the operatic sound. Opera singing have been around for hundreds of years. It was seen as basically the only form of singing, in higher circles of society. There are a lot of specifics about the technique, opera singers train for years. The main thing with opera is volume. It is a technique to sing with great volume. A whole opera house needs to hear the singer, and the singer has to sing above a whole orchestra without a microphone. Opera singers also mostly use full chest voice, that is the loudest voice, but it is also your lowest voice.
Contemporary singers especially these days are taught to sing softly and with loads of head voice, this gives your voice a much thinner sound.
Freddie also used to sing a lot with full chest voice, which brought him slight closer to the idea of opera. What you can say about opera is that it is the earliest form of study for the singing voice.

They don't sing to 'look pretty' although perhaps your example of mouthing might be more attractive if you were producing sound. Hmmm. Freddie was a consummate musician and the entertainment world is a better place for it - think all the pop/rock/opera collaborations we've enjoyed since Freddie and Montserrat gave us their magnificence. Feel better!
