Her name is Montserrat Caballe and she was a legendary opera singer (she died in 2018) that I never knew about until I heard her sing in youtube videos with Freddie Mercury who wrote songs for them to sing together. He was in awe of her and she was in awe of him. And they definitely loved each other. I love your reaction to her because I feel the same way. I never enjoyed listening to women singing opera until I heard her voice. There are no words to describe how heavenly her voice is, but like you, I could listen to it forever. And I love the combination of Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Cabell - it's electrifying. Thank you for a wonderful reaction.

Montserrat and Freddie loved through music. Plus, she attended the statue of Freddie unveiling and there is tape of that. Both a blessing.

Freddy loved opera and was Monserrat Caballé's fan number one; pronounce her name like Mon-se-'RRat Ca-ba-'ye. She was in the top of the tops of the world of sopranos. They have a good friendship as well. Take a look at she singing "Mio bambino caro", "Carmen" or "Casta Diva".
BTW: You don't know you love opera until you attend to one in a theatre. I only met this amazing artist once, but during my career as Stage Technician I've been participating dozens of operas. I've never bored during my shifts. :)

Freddie loved the opera and he loved Montserrat's voice, she was his favorite singer of all time. Freddie had said in an interview that it was a dream of his to sing one of his songs with her. Somehow that message got to Montserrat and it turns out she is quite the Freddie fan. She has her people get in touch with his people and they arranged to meet in her home town of Barcelona. Montserrat was the top soprano in the world at the time and the video of that first meeting was really something. Freddie was not only star struck, he was so nervous. They decided to go into the studio and see if they would be a good match for a duet. Freddie just wanted a tape of her singing with him but after recording one song, Montserrat wanted to do an album. Freddie said well, you just can't turn down the number one Diva in the world so he got busy writing songs for them to do the album Barcelona named for the place they met. The title song was written for the Barcelona Olympics though Freddie knew he would not be alive by that time. The song was indeed played at the Olympics but it was the album version, not live since Freddie had already passed on .Thank you for reacting to this beautiful song.

You definitely have to do Golden Boy. Freddie’s brilliant fusion of opera with rock/gospel/soul. And, don’t forget Barcelona. It was chosen for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Freddie passed in 1991 so was unable to perform it. However, it was still performed during the Opening Ceremony with Montserrat singing and Freddie’s vocals added.

That is the trained voice of a woman with immense vocal talent. Next, you should listen to "Exercises in Free Love" to hear Freddy sing operatic notes with no training whatsoever. As for an opera suggestion, you should seriously listen to "The Magic Flute" by Mozart. I used to sing opera in New York, and found your reaction absolutely beautiful. Your ear for music is stellar. Montserrat was one of a kind, by the way, and her relationship with Freddie (who wrote these songs specifically for her and this performance, I believe) was as special as they both were.

LOL. Loved the reaction, thanks! I agree, her breath control is freaking incredible. They did an entire album together that Freddie wrote with Mike Moran and Tim Rice. Freddie loved opera and he thought that Montserrat Caballé had the best voice in opera. It was a dream of Freddie's to sing with her which he shared with his manager, Jim "Miami" Beach. Beach arranged a meeting with the 55-year-old Barcelona-born singer at The Ritz hotel in Barcelona in 1986. Freddie took pianist and arranger Mike Moran with him and they played Caballé a demo recording of a song they had prepared for her called “Exercises In Free Love.” Freddie had sung a version imitating her falsetto delivery. Caballé loved the song and asked if she could sing it at Covent Garden the following week.
Freddie admitted he was a bag of nerves about working with Caballé, but she put him immediately at ease, jokingly referring to the Queen frontman as “her Number One.” He called her “my Super Diva.”
“She jokes and she swears and she doesn’t take herself too seriously,” said Freddie. “That really thrilled and surprised me, because up until then I had been laboring under the illusion that all great opera singers were stern, aloof, and quite intimidating. But Montserrat was wonderful. I told her I loved her singing and had her albums and asked if she’d heard of me. She told me she enjoyed listening to my music and had Queen albums in her collection, too.”
They became good friends and Montserrat Caballé was one of the 35 people who were allowed to attend the Zorasterian funeral ceremony for Freddie which was held three days after his death at the West London Crematorium on the grounds of Kensal Green Cemetery. Freddie's family were devout Zoroastrians.

Freddie is not focused on singing Opera. Just as Montserrat is not intending to bring us Rock or even Pop. Their objective was to bring us a collaboration --- of fantastic music. Didn't they do it! Never meant to be a contest, only .a fabulous performance. Listen/see them sing their hit album "Barcelona" and all the tracks. It's glorious entertainment from two entertaining legends.

I'm not an opera fan but I am in awe of opera singers. It is defo worth making the effort to see them sing live, even just once. Our posh neighbours had a garden party to raise funds for cancer research. They had a real opera soprano singing, she was only supported by a piano, but she filled that whole massive garden with her voice. I've never heard the like.

OK, try this: th-cam.com/video/wvBuCLjByaE/w-d-xo.html. Caballé was starring as Norma, the main character of a Bellini opera of the same name. That evening of 1974, the cast and crew were performing live at the Orange historical open-air Roman Theater. Yet in the midsts of powerful winds there was Caballé’s pure voice signing “Casta Diva”, despite the winds and over
the orchestra one of the most famous arias of the lyrical repertoire. Each time I watch her rendition that evening, I get goosebumps.

Isn't this just astounding? The whole album is superb.
My favorite operatic tenor is the late great Mario Lanza. He was my introduction to opera as a teenager way back in the middle of the last century. He was an Italian American who did not sing on opera stages, but in concerts and movies. He was quite a movie star, and some people didn't take him seriously as an opera singer because of it, but he really was one of the best. I chose the following little-known song, Lamento di Federico, because it is so excellent. I don't know which Federico is being lamented, but suspect it might be Lorca:
    th-cam.com/video/KKU3XEtUEGI/w-d-xo.html
Then his Una Furtiva Lagrima, because it is one of my favorites, and it begins and ends with bassoons!
    th-cam.com/video/JQxIO-v-9t0/w-d-xo.html
If you can do one more, here he sings Be My Love in English, with clips from a few of his films, just to show you how charming he was:
    th-cam.com/video/8t_D9zqyphw/w-d-xo.html
When it comes to Montserrat Caballé there is so much to choose from. You can find a treasure trove of her work if you search on TH-cam, but for starters, you can't go wrong with O Mio Babbino Caro: th-cam.com/video/RxZSP1Dc78Q/w-d-xo.html
Then you might want to listen to some of her earlier work. She was so beautiful.
A lot of people don't like operatic sopranos because they think they sound screechy. Indeed, many have such a brittle edge to their voices that they can make your ears bleed, but Montsy's voice is so magnificently mellow to the ear. There is none other like her.

Queen/The Prophet's Song-Love Of My Life REMASTERED from the 1975 album called A Night At The Opera. Only the REMASTERED version puts these two songs together as it is on the album. Must Hear Good!

Hi! This was the sweetest reaction, and I'm so delighted that you truly HEARD Montse the way Freddie did , and thus have fallen in love too. Although most people have covered her background as THE Prima Donna for the good part of 2 decades in the opera world, I would add that she was genuinely one of the kindest, purest souls to exist. There are a lot of videos on TH-cam and if you want to listen to any opera, my advice is indeed to start with Montserrat simply due to the quality and melodic element of her voice - her style of singing , Bel Canto, focuses on the sound and line of the music which in turn is easier listen to (There are many different genres within opera ). Try 'Casta Diva - 1974 in L'Orange'. Not only does she sound incredible, she looks beautiful. And there is a wonderful background story to it!

If you loved this then listen to the two other songs that they did together that have videos on TH-cam. “The Golden Boy” and “Barcelona”. To hear a master male opera singer then Luciano Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma live at Turandot will absolutely amaze you. You will love it!

Thanks, Tooblunt for reacting to my favorite collaboration between Freddie & Montsy - he wrote (and they recorded) an entire album together.. such an unusual pairing, but they meshed so beautifully.. hope you do more! Freddie was so in love with "Montsy" who was a premier opera singer in Spain... he was afraid to approach her at first.. but it worked out perfectly... (I'm sure you would also love the songs "Barcelona" and "the Golden Boy"... )

You used to live near Miami I think, did you move to North Carolina. If you're not far from Charlotte, there may be a live theatre venue there where you could experience opera or musicals like Phantom of the Opera, which I have seen in person twice with each performance unique. You could search locally where you are to find places like Ovens Auditorium, Levine Center for the Arts, Booth Playhouse or others. Contacting one or more of them, letting someone know about your interest, you might get some interesting offers, or insight into events or shows coming soon. If you're not in Charlotte, I'm sure you can find things in your area.

Freddie said of Montserrat, “I love music and she is the music.” It was a love affair of epic proportions. Freddie’s dream was to sing “Phantom of the Opera” with her. He became too ill for it to happen but she recorded the arias for him and played it to him over the phone in September of 1991, right before he died. He told her it was how he had always dreamed that it would sound. They loved each other so much. ❤️❤️❤️

Have you watched the whole program La Nit with their song, Barcelona? This is part of that 18 to 20 minute entire program. You will love it. Freddie wrote every single song and more.

This entire show and album is just so so magical. She passed as well in 2018. And now they sing together in the heavens again. They genuinely loved each other and had respect for each others crafts. She was one of the few people who was invited to see Freddie at his bedside just days before he passed away. We are so blessed they left us with this beautiful piece of art.

Way to go! I have a good friend who is a retired opera singer. I'll ask him for a few approachable operas for you to consider. It takes years to learn how to sing like that. Most opera singers don't need mics!🙃

If you watch Freddie do LOVE OF MY LIFE with Brian May on guitar and Freddie without his shirt you can see his abdominal muscles contract over and over....that is why he has such a great voice....for like an opera singer he sings from the abdomen and diaphragm rather than mid point and upper lungs and throat...

Here for Freddy but my job her voice is perfection. First heard of her singing Barcelona and the first now she sang before it even got started took my breath away. A voice from the heavens. And sadly now, it seems to be back with them.

I'm glad you were finally introduced to to the 8:38 world of Freddie Mercury.. He orchestrated this union wrote the songs, and put on a phenomenal performance, all while being sick. This was his dream and together they made it happen. We as fans are so lucky to have been part of this. Freddie's vision came to fruition and opened the door for other such collaborations....None will ever be as powerful as this.
