Yeah but the reliability is so bad. My 13 FRS died at 70K. 70K. That’s rotary engine reliability. If Toyota puts an inline TOYOTA BUILT 4 I’d consider this. But as long as subaru is making the motors…. No way.

It has 2 doors, it is manual, it is simple, with modern amenities, it is a boxer engine, in other parts of the world it comes with the spare wheel as well as the exterior ones, it is relatively small, it has no electrification, it is anti-GoldDigger.

You really got to adjust your standards accordingly to price. For price, the 86 is a great value. Sure you can’t outrun a Model 3 or have 135i interior but those things won’t matter when you are having fun and are paying about half the price. I can see why my friend likes it so much.

I almost want to chase that experience, lightweight, rwd, manual, etc. I’m just hoping it doesn’t feel too slow, but I have hopes it won’t. I’m currently in a 335i w upgraded suspension, fbo, tuned, xhp stage 3. I love driving it so much, to the point where I come up with places to go and make excuses to drive it. It’s getting up there in miles though and it’s slowly transitioning to my fun weekend car. My other vehicle is older, always overheating, and I need a good commute car. Its 30 min fun twisty backroads and 30 min interstate. So I was gonna get like a civic or corolla, but was thinking the gr86 could fill that roll AND keep the fun in my commute.

Once you realize that it's more fun to have a car like this that is focused on being lightweight balanced handling, you realise that it inspires you to drive a certain way and you're enjoying the whole way. The other heavier cars with more power doesnt even inspire you to drive them fast. Theyre too heavy and bulky its like your overweight and trying to move around quickly. This is perfect to tune for a track weapon balanced and the most fun while being practical living with.

6:36 honestly surprised with this bit about the steering, when I heard the GR Corolla was going to have electric steering I was expecting it to be worse than the GR 86. I've only driven the GR Corolla, so I thought the GR 86 would have just as heavy steering with more feedback.
The car I drove before was an aw11 mr2, and it had completely unassisted steering, and honestly going from it to the GRC was surprisingly not a big jump, the GRC has relatively heavy steering, but not enough to strain my arms as sometimes has happened with low speeds on my AW11.

This video is 6 reason to buy one lolol.
As a new GR86 owner (1 month in) coming from a really clean 2000 BMW e36 (yup no tech) & my wifes auto Kia Cerato, my opinion is that the car is perfect for a sportier daily.
I also got the 2025 model in manual which has adaptive cruise, game changer for me but I'm pushing 50 yrs old for reference lol. Had lots of sports bikes etc over the years so not chasing speed, that gets you in trouble real quick.
    Upsides (as a daily):
    - Plenty of space for a couple and 2 small dogs
    - Nice blend of old and new tech, love the big dials
    - Handles like a beast and not stupid power ...GR Yaris was too much for me for fun on the street
    - Looks like an Aston in silver
    - Insurance is under $1K in Australia, my wife's Kia cost more! (NA and 4 seats ftw!)
    - Love the eyesight, perfect blend of safety tech for daily and you can turn it off.
    - Little loud on HWY but not stupid. Am going to insulate torsion bars as per reddit thread
    - Nice balance of "raw feel" from the engine - you know it's there, but it's not in your face all the time (I'm yet to disconnect the audio, but am in break in so under 5k RPM still)
    Downsides:
    - Fuel economy, I'm getting 10L / 100km in Australia which is liveable, but that is absolutely babying it during break in period.
    - Oil starvation, I'd love to track it (mate has a lotus 410) but that scares the heck out of me, so will prob never see a track
    - Clutch needs adjusting, should be easy fix
If it just had an "economy mode" it'd be perfect with today's premium fuel prices ...but, considering the insurance and service costs of like $300 a year it's amazing.
Just don't watch the fuel bars lol.

The novelty of high performance cars wears off after a few years, the BRZ is sexy, handles well, is NA, better fuel economy, is still faster/quicker than the majority of cars out on the road. It's performance is dialed in just right for every day city driving, power right where you need it. You're not going to be pulling 310HP in an STI driving on 50-60km roads, let alone jam packed 401/QEW highways. The BRZ is best suited for those types of roads.

I'd welcome comments or insights to my test drive experience with the GR86.
I've owned 7 cars, all of them manual transmissions. Other than the 3 SUVs I've had the rest were FWD. I've had a 2011 Mini Cooper S (MCS) for the past 12 years and have loved the go kart handling, brisk acceleration and fun factor. I've been thinking that in the next year of two I'll be ready for a new car and a change. I was lusting after the Veloster N (I love hot hatches) but it was unfortunately discontinued. It seems that the auto industry is going in the direction of distancing the driving experience rather than catering to those who enjoy driving so the options of a driver's car are shrinking. The GR86/ BRZ caught my eye, especially after reviews that this latest generation had addressed its weaknesses. I had a test drive the other day, I wanted to love this car but I was disappointed. I use my back seat about one week a year but when you need it you need it. I've found the MCS's back seat adequate, maybe not for a cross country trip with 4 adults but for a day trip it's okay. The back seat of the GR86 was not as useable as the Mini's. I adjusted the driver's seat for my driving position (I'm 5'8") got out and tried to get into the seat behind it. I got my body into place but wasn't able to stuff my size 11 shoes into the space behind the driver's seat. I moved the driver's seat up a couple of inches and was able to get fully into the back seat. I then had the 5'10" salesman sit in the seat behind me both to see if a taller person could fit and also to see how far up I'd have to move the driver's seat. Once he got in I moved the seat back and could've driven in this less than ideal position but he had to duck his head slightly as it was brushing the rear window. Starting to be a deal breaker. A big plus of the GR86 of the MCS was the cargo space. It was easily double that of the Mini. I recently took a 4000 mile road trip and I had to keep the rear seat of the Mini folded down to accomodate our 2 overhead size suitcases. The GR86 would've stored them pretty easily. I liked the interior of the 86 as well as the feel of its shifter.
Visibility however was noticeably better in the Mini. Once we were out on the road I intentionally took a 90 degree right turn a little fast, but probably not more than 20mph. The 86 fishtailed alot and then swerved after the correction. The Mini would not have budged off of its intended track. As Jubbal mentioned at about 3:20 some people like the sliding. I don't and to me it's not a positive thing. I drive in a spirited way but I don't go to track days where slides can be done in a controlled and safe manner. This too was a deal breaker and unless they reintroduce the Veloster N or some other new car that I find exciting the Mini has recaptured its position as my next car. I know that alot of people have a strong preference for RWD cars. Other than driving my parents' car when I was a new driver years ago or driving a rental I don't drive RWD cars. I'd appreciate meaningful comments about my experience if you have them or insights into pros and cons of FWD vs. RWD. Thanks and stay safe out there.

Telling people they're not watching their oil temps is absurd. It means the car has insufficient cooling capacity. You don't make a car that people will drive on track that can't cool itself properly. It's not even fast, so it shouldn't have cooling issues.

ONE thing I hate about this car (and not literally the car itself) is that these v8-engine motor- heads -that -recently -bought -a stock -v8 -and -recently -got into -the -car scene always think this car “looks fast” and always want a race.
If anyone who is truly into the car scene from JDM to Euro to American muscle would already KNOW that this car is s l o w and would appreciate its handling capabilities and I guess you can say drifting.
Recently met a dude at a quick trip with a Hellcat that was shocked he was able to see a GR86 when he saw me pull up. People like him really are the reason why the car community is great.
Straight line performance isn’t always everything in a car.

My favorite car I’ve personally ever owned was a 2010 Lexus IS250 Convertible. 206 horsepower dragging a 3800 (3950 with me in it) pound dead horse down the road. I liked it though! The word I always thought of to describe the driving was "planted". This was a car that could take a turn on a highway at 110 without sliding… it was insane! It took a few business days to get to 110, but with the top down who cares! Going to this from an 07 Acura MDX, the near completely eliminated risk of a roll over was also quite nice 😂

Really liked the video and agree for the most part. I will say that I've seen a lot of posts calling this car everything from "slow" to "very slow", and that's just not true.
The car is NOT fast. That's true. Buuuut it's not any variation of slow either lol. It's quick. Still has an athletic like acceleration (even the auto, I know sinful).
My point is, I think most people think this car has the acceleration of a commuter car in a sports car like shell. That's not true. It's still faster than most cars on the road lol

I really love the look of the 2nd gen GR86 but im struggling with two of the points you brought up.. 1 the performance.. I know its like a Miata where HP isnt everything but coming from a GTI & 328I both tuned I feel like I will miss the power... And Point 6 the interior... I know its probaly not bad but once you dabble in VW/BMW interiors even Mazda like you said its hard to go back to a budget basic interior.. Sometimes Its like I wish I never knew what a higher end interior was like because I never use to care. Still the 86 seems like a pure drivers car and I can get behind that.

    if you buy a GR86, you get a GR86.
if you want more space, buy an SUV. if you want more power/speed, buy a gt3, huracan, etc. if you want something more luxurious, buy a bentley, RR, etc.
if you buy a compact entry-level sports coupe, you don't also get to complain about compact entry-level sports coupe performance or downsides.
it's pay-to-play baby. porsches and lambos cost more for a reason, so either pay-up or shut-up lol
no car is everything for everyone. you're going to have to compromise a little somewhere. figure out what you want/need and buy car(s) that meet as many of your desires/requirements as possible.

The problem is subaru engines suck. Subaru admitted their problems in '02 and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing about it. If this car had the B48 engine, it would have been an absolute monster and given the 86 unreal tuning potential.

the new 2022 brz is much better, and a simple small procharger will make these things absolute street monsters. You keep that driver experience but gain all the power BRZ owners and onlookers have been complaining about for years. the mx5 suffers similar issues, super light and a true drivers care with wonderful feedback, zippy but not really fast. a little boost goes a long way. I have had the pleasure of being in a couple procharged older brzs now, not one of the new years yet...they really are everything you want in a car...except it snows here. A stock brz can be managed in the snow with winter tires, but a procharged one is a real challenge. For that reason, people like me end up getting a larger heavier awd wrx with a lot more power that cant out drag a stock brz just to be able to play year round. Seriously, if I could figure out how to 70/30 r/f awd a brz somehow, I really feel it wouldlt rob people of the driver experience, although it would alter it a lot. more money than its worth tho right. If anyone out there loves the BRZ but dogs the power this is what I can say...they FEEL fast behind the wheel, even bone stock. They feel really fast with a little boost and frankly, they get sketchy fast with moderate boost. Trust me, you can have your cake and eat it too with a conservative boost...and you will absolutely roast every single one of your sti/wrx owning friends...much to our upset.
