  • A lot of fans think Will Shipley is going to beat out Kenny Gainwell for the RB2 job. But is it really going to be that easy?

    This is an ESPN-level (better, frankly) breakdown. How I hope this channel takes off during the season.

      Ummm, clearly talk radio hosts know more by their "gut feelings" and "eye tests!"
      This channel really has been a breath of fresh air to any (intelligent) Birds fan, especially when Tom from Breaking the Birds ostensibly stopped posting video breakdowns. Nick (and Eric) does such an amazing job in these video essays. Well, today was more of a novella. But you get what I mean. (And yes, obv the above is sarcasm.)

    Just keep this channel growing, man. Great stuff, as always. Shoutout to the OGs who were with this channel when it had 2- and 3-digit subscribers. Hoping to see, soon, a day when it'll be between 2 and 3-hundred thousand ones. Thanks for this. I am a Shipley guy. He's young and went where he should have. Almost "mad" that we couldn't take Jayen Wright due to MIA giving us a third-rounder for that mid-fourth. Have to take that all day. Think he's more gifted than Gainwell, but yeah, Kenny isn't some slouch. Glad he was/will never be our RB1; however, he clearly has value to this roster.

    People have been too negative on Gainwell, I hope he bounces back this season, still a strong pass blocker by far

      I agree. The shitty scheme actually hurt his game. I think he's better in singleback than he is running out of shotgun.

    I’ll admit Shipley wasn’t on the top of my list of RBs I wanted for us but he’s a very underrated player. Not the fastest or the strongest but he’s a great pass catching back and that might be the only thing he’s great at he really simply does everything good. Don’t see him ever being a starting quality back but I see him as one of the best backup/role playing RB in the league for years. Another great breakdown brotha keep it up 🫡🦅

    i know im late to this but i feel like ship is finally on a team that not only has a good oline but also somewhere he can actually develop because neither mafah or ship could pass block well at all, and both had the same issue with holding the ball loose, i really feel like that comes down to poor coaching!! great video!!

    I think Gainwell losing the starting job to Swift caused him to try and play outside of himself. Gainwell could not compete with Swift as an athlete and I think lost his identity as a runner. To me he is a great backup and capable of being a spot starter I would love to see Gainwell extented so he can go out and just do his job instead of fight for a contract.
    Shipley and Gainwell are very similar as are Jalyx and Nolan Smith as well as Trotter and Dean. Not sure if this is intentional draft strategy or just chance.

    Another 3 comment-piece: I mentioned the Jaylen Wright trade we correctly made in the draft for MIA's '25 third-rounder. Wright is clearly faster, bigger and more explosive. Do you see him projecting as a RB1 in due time, or a high end backup, or neither? Furthermore, do you have stats on how he was catching the ball and blocking pass rushers? I know you HAVE to take that deal -- especially when holding 3 fourths in a fairly weak draft -- but would Wright have been a "huge" upgrade over Shipley? Not that I think the Birds ever see Shipley as an impact runner. Was clear (at least to me) they used Day 1 and 2 for long-term top-end needs/talent, while using R4 and R5 on needs for this year, no?

    • @PhillyFilmRoom
      @PhillyFilmRoom  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think Wright will be a high end piece in a rotation. I don't think he'll become a workhorse getting 250-300 touches a year, barring injury forcing him into that role. Wright didn't put a whole lot on tape as a receiver but that was more due to Tennessee's offense + Joe Milton at QB. He did have the most catches by a RB since Josh Heupel took over though, so I think that's showing they trusted him more as a pass catcher. I would've loved Wright as a back up to Barkley due to his big play upside (ala Keaton Mitchell, Achane, Gibbs), but I think he went to the perfect offense in Miami to fit his skillset due to their preference of outside zone/perimeter run game.

    • @uncletom356
      @uncletom356 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PhillyFilmRoom Yeah, it’s almost like both teams had to do the deal. Would’ve been absolutely perfect behind Saquon, though. Next year’s RB class is so legit maybe they think they can get a future RB1 using that added pick in some way - via trade-up or if one slips.
      Thanks for the quick breakdown. Big, fast, productive SEC runner is tough to pass. Especially averaging like 7+ YPC. But I’d have expected that profile to be much more appealing than going in the 120s. He and Achane could be an absolute force. Need a five-way race between Waddle, Hill, Achane, Mostert and Wright.
