    OH HELL YES! Jalen Carter talk intertwined with Fangio’s use, with metrics to boot. This is like hooking hope-ium right into my veins. Especially since last night’s Phils walloping and Birds’ key (minor) injuries keep leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Now that the Phils are at least beating a terrible pitcher and this video drops, hopefully it’s a good omen. Thanks for the hard work, PFR.

      @uncletom356 hahahaha. I predict the slump is over when he doesn't have to go against Lane Johnson everyday. Lane is a horrible matchup for Bryce since he's more of a speed rusher trying to capture the edge. Lane is so quick out of his stance he doesn't get beat around the edge and pretty much forces you into a bull rush

      @@PhillyFilmRoom Bless your 🦅 💚, I was talking about Harper ha. But thanks for the Huff update! Always like keeping tabs on him. I know you think he’ll be a beast. I tend to agree. Amazing that NYJ simply didn’t re-sign him if they were so petty about Reddick’s age. And as you mention, when going against the RT 🐐, that can def stifle ya. Were you at the open practice? Or do you get media access to closed ones? Or just from reports? Just curious. Nothing overly important lol

      @uncletom356 oh hahahaha. I should've put 2 and 2 together. I pretty much watch football and ufc so that went over my head. I'm not at the practices, I live in Chicago and am not a credentialed media member, just reading reports. I think Brandon Gowton said he hasn't really stood out, mentioned Reddick never really did in practice going against Lane too. Who knows though, maybe I can go the Solak route and end up on ESPN one day

    Nick, quick question: As you have made this point re: unblocked pressures Wilkins had last year, you’ve seemingly used it as a parallel to Carter. Understandably so, since Jalen is the freakiest/best iDL we have - and am still shocked we got an elite-elite talent after being in the SB. Here’s my question: Since Carter has that Donald-esque game breaking role every time he lines up - and likely cannot be blocked 1-on-1 for full games - do you think the “Wilkins unblocked scheme” could go to Davis? He should be more nimble this year, and having a man his size with that explosion barreling toward your QB, could make it interesting. (Or do those unblocked Fangio schemes tend to happen on 3rd downs, when, theoretically, Davis may be off the field?) Or do you see JD as a pocket-collapsing behemoth without much in terms of pass rushing - even if it’s unblocked with his fast first step(s)? Hope that makes sense. Although, if Jalen can be schemed to be unblocked, his immediacy getting off the line and force of his hits would make him the ideal candidate. However, I tend to think he’ll be a weapon regardless - unblockable 1v1 or taking on 2-3 blockers when double/triple teamed. Ok, thanks much. Know it’s disjointed.
    Trying to type and watch the game isn’t a strength of mine lol

    • @PhillyFilmRoom
      @PhillyFilmRoom  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The unblocked looks Wilkins often got were on stunts.
      Fangio runs more of his blitz/simulated pressure packages on 1st & 10, and 2nd /3rd & 1-6 to go. He runs more coverage with stunts on 2nd/3rd & 7+ (although he will combine line movement with blitzes at times).
      I'm of the opinion that JD is going to be more of an early down/short yardage player and they'll rotate in other guys 2nd/3rd & long, so I don't think he'll run those stunts as much. JD does have a good first step for a guy his size, but there's still quicker guys and the lateral agility is a big factor for being effective running stunts. I think the Eagles have better interior guys suited to do that such as Milton Williams. And I also think they'll run some Nascar packages with 3 Edge rushers + JC (some combination of Huff, Sweat, Nolan, BG, Jalyx).
      I see Milton as the guy much more likely to fill Sieler role, where he's getting unblocked pressures from running different stunts with the DE opposite of Jalen Carter + running those read stunts with JC where they set the pick but often times come unblocked as the Center doesn't switch from JC to the guy setting the pick.

    As someone who has studied the Fangio system religiously for years and has an unrealistically high bar for anything related to it, I feel it’s necessary to acknowledge that this is phenomenal. My bullshit meter is as sensitive as they come and usually it goes off within 20 seconds whenever Joe Schmoe just spews the same surface level crap that has been recycled year after year.
    There is a much deeper level to Fangio’s defense that I’ve only ever seen a handful of people properly express, and it is so refreshing to come across examples like this.
    The only problem is that we need to get you set up with better Whip install than his crappy 2017 version. I’ve got a guy on Twitter who will hook it up

    • @PhillyFilmRoom
      @PhillyFilmRoom  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Appreciate it! Yeah everyone seems to focus on the coverage and not much about how he attacks protections, run fits, adjustments, etc.
      I'd definitely like to see an updated Fangio playbook. That 2017 one has it's place, but I'm sure it's been updated to reflect changes in the league such as the sharp increase in quick at-the-snap motion.

    • @jaypee4188
      @jaypee4188 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PhillyFilmRoom A lot of the detail in that install is still the same as it’s been since he left Baltimore, but that version has no detail on techniques, route distribution, or run fits. The coverage mechanics have been modernized a bit with a Saban-like influence. Coach Vass and Honest NFL on Twitter both managed to find out all those details and how it all works. They post a ton of details on techniques, front/coverage mechanics, and terminology that they managed to find somehow. Regardless, this is good stuff. Keep it up.

    What is the "weak" side anyway??? lol I always get confused

    • @PhillyFilmRoom
      @PhillyFilmRoom  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This could turn into a long conversation.
      There's pass strengths and run strengths. I'll talk about passing strengths first. The passing strength refers to the side of the line that has more receiving threats. So for example, in a 3x1 formation, it's the side that has the three receiving threats (could be any combination of WRs, TEs or even RBs). The side with the one receiving threat is the weak side.
      2x2 formations can get more complicated, but to keep it simple, if it's a 2x2 formation, the passing strength is usually the side with 2 "detached" receiving threats (for example, one side has two WRs, the other side has one WR and one TE lined up next to the offensive line). If it's 2x2 with nobody attached to the offensive line (but still with 3 WRs and 1 TE), the passing strength is usually to the side with 2 WRs.
      There's also a run strength. This is referring to the offensive line plus any TEs that may be aligned right next to them. So if there is one TE aligned next to the offensive tackle, that side is the strong side of the line and the other side is the weak side. It's the strong side because there is more blockers on that side and more gaps that the defense is responsible for.
      The defense will often set the front (defensive line & linebackers) based on the run strength and their back 7 (defensive backs & linebackers) based on the pass strength.
      It can get much more complicated than this, but that's just a basic overview.

    • @PhillyFilmRoom
      @PhillyFilmRoom  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well it's a team sport. It's not as if they didn't have good performances against good offenses.
      The defense gave up 14 points to the Chiefs and lost 21-14 because of a bad offensive performance including giving up a fumble return for TD. They held the Bills to 14 points but lost 21-14 due to a punt return TD given up, and again, bad offense. They also had to play Melvin Ingram and Emmanuel Ogbah the majority of snaps at edge due to injuries that game (and Eli Apple). They gave up 20 to the Cowboys and won.
      Overall, they dealt with a lot of injuries all year to their Edge rushers, LBs and secondary. On top of that, they had to play guys like Kader Kohou at outside corner in a number of games despite the fact he's probably more of a slot corner, and just not very good overall. And Eli Apple also had to play a lot.

      You're just being disingenuous by asking why they couldn't beat good offenses. They did their part several times. They also didn't hold up several times, that's what happens against good offenses. The offense, which dealt with injuries of their own at times, often didn't hold up either. Other times they did.
