This may be a Lister D engine which made between 1.5 to 2.5 horse power. I would suggest the repair is easily adequate for that sort of output. The shaft he replaced is the output probably driving a belt in which case a bit of runout doesn't matter. For the life of me I can't understand people criticising these skilled men working with the machinery and tools they have available to them. No doubt they don't use a micrometer or dial gauge because they don't have them. At least no one has commented on their clothing/footwear which seems compulsory on almost every other of these videos.
It’s definitely not a D, they had an overhung crank. Looks like a later diesel engine.
I’m in total agreement with the rest of your comment though. It’s more than likely a 5-10hp engine that is running slowly, probably less than 1000rpm.
nope won't last long like that.... mechanic here with 30 years experience..
I didn't imagine how he used the grinding missile to finish the outer diameter of crankshaft 😂😂

Another "repair" video to feast on the gullibility of the TH-cam viewer. The moment he clamped on the bearing journal was proof this is for entertainment purposes only.
At the beginning of the video:
It#s necessary to transport some
"I can't be walkin' and carryin' things across streets and whatnot. I don't get paid extra for that"
Put in an engine, this crankshaft would be a time-bomb. Good for nothing but paperweight.
Even assuming the crank is a "time-bomb", as you say, what's there to lose if your solution is to junk the engine anyhow?
@@khester7397
Pick up another crank, they're plentiful.
This 'repair' never went back in an engine😂😂
Yep, that's well balanced, and a great job on polishing.
I assume this man has a technique for this kind of repair, and this Lester motor was picked up on the cheap for a new purpose, very ingenious and probably has many years of this type of engineering. To do this and it works for said time. This man is a genius, I doubt anyone in the United States has the gumption to this type of repair. Very interesting to say the least.
Lovely how he welds the bearing of his lathe at the same time
Nice center-less grinding job on the tapered shaft. Definitely a precision fit. And using a center-lathe as a rotary welding table. Neat. All the current goes through the spindle bearings.
With all the rust on the bearing surfaces, someone used a lot of force to break that. An oh shucks moment.
Under the circustances and the equiptment available for the repair, this is an EXCELLENT job. I'll bet it works for a long time. Thanks.
The worst thing is that the mechanic workshop is far from the lathe mechanic, and then you have to go by motorcycle!🤭
That is a lovely boat anchor.
As long as its not a heavy boat, maybe a book end?
I wonder how many commentators know about pouring bearings, or how it’s done.

Great ..... now it's slightly shinier scrap metal

Admiro essas pessoas...muito competentes... abração a eles..🙏
He did not just polish (?) a bearing journal with an angle grinder, did he? I KNOW he did not hit that tapered shaft with a grinder...it'll never fit properly again. Plus, there HAS to be a seal at both ends of this crankshaft that will be destroyed with the finish....if it contacts the shaft after removing too much material. Did anyone see the dead center wobbling during the machining? A couple taps with the hammer and a dial indicator would have made this fix even better. I know there is limited availability for some materials, but they seriously can't find something to lubricate the way-too-coarse sandpaper while polishing (sanding!) a ROD journal? Maybe step it up to at least 320 grit or possibly 400? I'm just guessing nobody cares about the thrust surface of the crank either...it is 'fixed' but I don't think this fix is even a little effective at getting it to stay alive very long.
Maybe...just MAYBE it's going to a engine shop next to get the journals polished and trued up again...and maybe magnaflux that weld to see if cracks formed welding something-steel to cast iton?
He’s a junk artist 🎉
There has been an endless stream of these videos recently. Casting brake rotors from old soup cans, welding together heat treated cv axle shafts, etc. Either these repairs are fake or they don't last more than a few hours.
Congratulations you have made garbage

Amazing workmanship! Thank you for sharing this video. Greetings from Madang, Papua New Guinea!
Couldn't they just go walking across the street? Unbelievable! Haha
We all view these repairs based on what we work with in our own countries.
Most of us watching this would be used to the accuracy required for a car or motorcycle engine, where they rev high and produce large power.
This crankshaft is not for that type of engine, it is for something as simple and crude as a ~1900s vintage engine which really do rattle and bang away.
Also if it runs white metal bearings, instead of shell bearings, they will pour new ones
well, atleast his lathe is quite clean. Its good start.
Great job!
A typicle 3. Wold fix. Will last 50 miles then its not his problem anymore
it's a big old single cylinder and lightly loaded.
the metal looks to be some sort of hard cast iron so presumably the machine it ran broke and seized causing the breakage,

This part was not broken, it was cut to show what can be possible to repair. In a Lister diesel with overzised parts running on 600 rpm/min it can be possible if u do it properly (I have done crazy repairs a lifetime in the norwegian army just to investigate what can be possible) And because the part probably was not ment to be in use again he didnt had to do it correctly perfect, it was just a show off. I guess this guy in his homecountry is a very clever craftsman, he has scills. To know its a show, just look at 1:30 when he measured the axial distance with his calliper, he knows better than this, but didnt bother! Like most american filmmakers that produces movies for average ignorant people. I could find many details not made perfect here, but this comment is already long enough.
The material would hold but the Maschine dosen't work good with this because polishing at last with the angle grinder is the death of this Projekt. I like the Idea and i would like to see how the engine runs.

Looks nice but it wil break onder load soon
you can not cook on a lathe , because of this, the bearings on the shafts may be damaged , due to poor contact , the rollers will overheat and begin to collapse . Because of this , current collectors are even made on locomotives , so that currents do not pass through the bearings and do not overheat them .
Now place it in a glass cabinet for people to admire.
You are Doing Good Keep It Up ❤❤
However in my opinion it is cheaper to go for New replacement rather than rebuilding the old one. Specifically in such components.
Thanks.
There are no spare parts for engines that old!

I don't know what kind of 'heat treat' it had when it was made, but I'm guessing it diasappeared with the cutting torch. Having said that, considering the type of engine this is going in it'll probably still be 'put puting' away in ten years.
I insist and affirm that an infinite number of metals, when heated, change their quenching properties (in this case) and then do not function properly. They love heat and unceremonious pounding, and in many specific parts this causes serious unseen damage that accelerates breakage and wear.
I doubt the strength of this camshaft after it was heated redhot. It's no longer tempered as it was bfore.
I was thinking a much deeper root pass on each section
And you think that welding on the surface will take the torque? Yeah, right!
The same i thought.
When the engine was strong enough to break the whole genuine shaft before, then - of course - it will not break the fixed shaft, whih is only welded on the surface.....
OMG. But thumb up in the video was his last action.
This is easy done. Prefect repair. For people with less daily life as these people it may look extraordinary. This is just the answer to how the East can go to the moon and back with a fraction of the cost.
surprised he didn't just poop on it and say it was finished
I enjoyed the video but I have serious doubts about the result...
You notice he upped the bearing clearance..Need to, to take care pf the run out..

Cruza la calle en moto😂
My guess is that it isn’t a very high RPM.
If the crank shaft is from an engine used as a gen set you would be looking at 1800 hundred RPM to achieve 60 Hertz , but the broken stub was never properly centered ,not even with your basic knowledge of set up and matching , like putting the lathe in neutral or out of gear and rolling the chuck/ spindle slowly and bringing a soap stone marker slowly against it to feel out the high spot or the runout , yeah give them a lot of credit for efforts but ultimately on the runout problem alone , N.F.G. or N.S.F.. Ha Ha Ha sorry Guys no disrespect !
I'd like to know what broke this. I seriously doubt that the engine that this comes from is capable of the torque needed.
This crankshaft is from a single cylinder lister engine.
I restore old engines as a hobby , have seen this issue myself.
Usually starts from a crack in the keyway that migrates and snaps the shaft.
The end that is broken is the flywheel end. although they run low speed from 1000 to 1500 rpm the flexing in the shaft due to the big flywheel and being a diesel is the problem
Never seen this issue on the twin flywheel engines as the twist is reduced.
One problem is see is the lack of indexing of the flywheel when it was welded, as the flywheels are usually balanced as a unit, with the crank shaft.
Im hoping there was some form of stress relieving of the crank shaft after welding.
But all powers to the workers do what you have to do with what is available.
cheers from Australia.
Would be helpful to have seen the surfaces at the failure point, most likely a fatigue failure after 50 years service, possibly in a slow rpm situation in a critical band for torsional vibration. I picked up a new, boxed crankshaft for my Lister JP4 for 180 quid, so I'm probably good for 200 years I think.
@@peters9929 Your reply seems reasonable. The keyway certainly could be a stress concentration. There is no cracking into the keyway though. It also looks like the shaft was not initially broken into two pieces; there is evidence of a cutoff wheel being used. I wonder if it might also be possible that someone used a sledge hammer to drive the flywheel off of the taper.
@@philhealey4443Your speculation also seems reasonable. Years ago I worked on stationary oil field engines. That equipment is enormous for the relatively low power they produce. While there can be a lot of wear on sliding and rotating surfaces, I seldom saw load related failures to components.
