Fantastic underrated movie. This came out the same year as The Prestige which completely overshadowed The Illusionist. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend watching that as well! I love both and think you will too!

This movie is base, very loosely, on historical fact in that the Emperor Franz Joseph had a son (Rudolf) who committed suicide, along with a female companion. It was a major scandal at the time. In the wake of his death, the heir-apparent to the throne was the Emperor’s nephew, Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination was the partial cause of World War One.

This movie would probably be far better known except for one piece of spectacular bad luck: it just happened to be released at the same time as ANOTHER twist-filled movie about a 19th century magician, The Prestige. And despite both films being very good in their own right, Neil Burger just has nothing on the name recognition of The Prestige's Christopher Nolan (who was coming straight off Batman Begins the previous year). So of course ever since, there's been a big war over which one is better, with few people seeming to feel like I do, that it's perfectly fine to think both movies do a great job with their own stories and there's no need to pit them against each other just because of the freak accident of their both being made at the same time.

    • @cjmars822

I agree that each film is excellent in their own spaces. Personally, I prefer The Illusionist because it's more of a love story (of which I'm a sucker for). The Prestige seemed to be much darker in theme and tone, it is after all a revenge film. Anyways, The Illusionist deserved more press and praise than it received. That said, those of us that HAVE seen it tend to love it.

And in my humble opinion, The Prestige is the better film. I can usually follow a story on these reviews, even if I haven't seen the movie, itself (which in this movie's case, I have not). I am about halfway through her reaction, and have NO IDEA what the point of this movie is.

WHY do people on here complain about *comparing* movies, or music? Heck, this is what the Acadamy Awards do every year. This is what we do -- we watch, and judge. It's practically impossible not to have a preference, even if you don't name it on here.

I'll never forget when I saw this in theaters and was completely fooled by the plot until the awesome twist ending. I loved it and knowing the surprise now going in makes it even more of a treat to watch. Also, this film reminds me a lot of the novel "The Phantom of the Opera" in that Erik, the Phantom, is also an illusionist who's so skilled people think he has supernatural gifts. It makes me wonder what Edward Norton would be like as a book-accurate Erik.

    Good reaction.
At about the same time, two movies about magicians came out - this one and "The Prestige." One problem with TH-cam reactions to movies or music is that once a reactor does a reaction to a movie or to a song, hundreds of reactors react to it, but similar equally or even more deserving movies or songs are never done. There is precious little original thinking. There have been many, many reactions to "The Prestige." It's a great movie, but it's ridiculous that it should be reacted to incessantly and the "Illusionist" never. I've been hoping for years that someone would react to "The Illusionist," so thanks for doing it.

A really great triple feature would be
    -"Houdini" (1953) starring Tony Curtis
-"The Illusionist" (2006) starring Edward Norton
-"The Prestige" (2006) starring Christian Bale & Hugh Jackman
You could also include "Now You See Me" (2013) & "Now You See Me 2" (2016) with a fabulous ensemble cast.
This film was not well-received when it first came out, but I think it's a hidden gem. Not as flashy as "The Prestige", but I think better.
The reasons you give for why you like this film, those would also make you love "Now You See Me".

Woo-hoo! Not an Ed Norton fan but I loved this. "Nothing you see is real" Most important line in the movie. Like the movies "tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp " this movie and "the prestige" were out at about the same time. I hate that hen the market is overrun with what people think is the same movie. The prestige is a sci-fi thriller, this is a love story. Rupert, Jessica, Paul all great in this. Rupert gets his typical "Ruprick" part. Jessica very pleasing to watch. Paul does a nice cop as a magician wannabe loves the orange tree. NOTHING YOU SEE IS REAL!

It was implied that he murdered a previous relationship by throwing her off of a balcony. I don’t understand why you and some others don’t seem to get that. That’s why Eisenheim becomes concerned for her welfare. The prince is no one to feel sorry for.

@@MsAppassionata I don't think he murdered her by throwing off the balcony, just hurt her badly. And yes, when angry people get drunk they can do bad things.
