The downside of this movie's notorious screwed up Best Picture announcement is that you're far more likely to hear about how La La Land lost than Moonlight winning, and it absolutely deserves that recognition. I even remember one article that called the La La Land producers "heroes" just for giving the award to its rightful owners instead of, I guess, just running off into the night with it.

I don’t even dislike La La Land but I remember being viscerally angry about anyone thinking it deserved the award over this masterpiece. You really hit the nail on the head, I also remember twitter being particularly unbearable around that time lmao

@@aychelleff A lot of people say it only won because of "the Woke Academy" lol which is insane, I agree it deserved the win.

Juan is on screen for such a small part of the film, but his impact is so huge. One of my favorite supporting characters (literally and figuratively) in a film.

It's heartbreaking because the viewer could see how having a parental figure that cares about a child can boost that kid's ego and life. And sadly, black boys experience a lot more absentee fathers and turn to violence or crime where if they had a stable home, they'd have more love and guidance.

Mahershala Ali wasn't exactly unknown before this movie, having been a big hit on Netflix shows House of Cards and Luke Cage, but his Oscar win for this movie propelled him to a whole new level that he's stayed at ever since, even being the only actor to be in the same year's Best Picture and Best Animated Feature Oscar winners with Green Book and Into the Spider-Verse.

The amount of happiness I felt when Chirone cracked that chair over ole boy's head is troubling to me. I always run it back to watch it again.

Fun fact: The guy who played teenaged Kevin name is Jharrel Jerome. He won an Emny in Ava Duvernay"s, "When They See Us. He is an amazing actor. 😊😊

Like you, I was constantly hoping things would get better for him. Jeez, how much can one boy take? I think the ending with him being a little boy again (on the beach, in the moonlight) means that that's how he felt, in the arms of his friend. And that everything would be alright. At least that's what I hope...❤
Amazing and important movie! Great reaction from you!

I think it's a film that actually gets better on subsequent watches. In the third part especially, once you know what's going to happen (and what isn't going to happen) you can take in the conversation more completely - there are so many points where Black DOESN'T say something, where you can see him maybe about to and where he would do in a more typical drama, but because of his experiences he just swallows it and stays quiet. And then the line "You're the only man who's ever touched me" - I think about that line a lot, the way it bubbles up out of him all at once, eventually, in a rush

Winner of 3 Oscars including Best Picture.
At the 2017 Academy Awards, everyone thought that LALALAND won, until 2 minutes later, the producers announced that MOONLIGHT was the real winner, which shocked everyone! Ryan Gosling was like, "WTF!?"

Trevante Rhodes is so insanely good here, all three of the actors who portray Chiron are excellent but his performance feels so intimate and real and you can read his face like a book, but you still come away with new insights into how he's feeling every time god this movie is perfect lmao

I don’t get how he didn’t get nominated. He had to incorporate two other actors performances and mannerisms while also exploring new emotions for the present day. And I think he did it flawlessly

When an interviewer asked Tupac why he raps about violence and negative stuff his reply was - " I don't have no beautiful stories to tell." Once Pac was 18 drug dealers took care of him. His mom was not able. I think she was on drugs....before that he was all preppy and sophisticated. So I'm glad this movie showed the complexity of a drug dealer being a young man's only father figure and male role model.

I like this movie It doesn't really stereotype black gay men or women or black people in general a lot of people of color in the lgbtq community can learn something from watching this movie I would love to see more movies and TV shows centered around people of color that are lgbtq like this one thank you for making this video and happy Black History Month sister

A as gay black man, I rarely see myself represented in movies in a positive light. In order to experience the impact of most movies, I just switch the pronouns and imagine what it feels like. This was one of the first, and few, movies I’ve seen where I actually could feel without imagining.
