    Was a lot of fun watching this back to back along with the Prestige. Similar in may ways but also sooo different

    One of the most underrated movies. The magic is secondary to the love story. Edward Norton gave an amazing performance!

    I'm glad you're doing this. "The Prestige" is a fine movie, but having dozens of reactions to that and virtually none to this is ridiculous.

    I was magician in nightclubs for over 20 years. "The Orange Tree Illusion" was invented by Robert Houdin. It was considered to be an automaton. Pieced together like an intricate watch of gears and springs.

    I enjoyed The Illusionist more than I did Prestige tbh.

    I perform magic professionally, and I liked both the Illusionist and The Prestige. However, I feel that the Prestige is the better film and is more historically accurate. The illusions performed in "The Illusionist" are not possible in real life, except in one case. Many of the illusions performed in "The Prestige" are possible (except for the obvious exceptions). Again, both are great films.

    • @AlexanderForsman
      @AlexanderForsman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Illusions in the Illusionist are exaugurated so that it would fool the viewer, like a more realistic version would have fooled the audience of that time. If we knew for certain that it was a trick, then we would instantly know that she was alive and the *real illusion* of the movie would fail.

    • @merlinscat
      @merlinscat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually I believe you are incorrect at least two of the tricks are possible the orange tree is a famous trick, and the ghosts is a trick named peppers ghost, I am also fairly certain that the sword trick is also possible.

    • @MrHale
      @MrHale ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In The Illusionist, many of the tricks are possible. Almost all of them, I'm sure. In The Prestige, many of them are fake and can't be done.

    • @eponinethenardier7037
      @eponinethenardier7037 ปีที่แล้ว

      And does anyone believe that the Duchess would trade a prince for a simple magician in real life?
      The film is based on a true story, the mayerling incident;.
      Duchess Sophie von Teschen is Baroness Mary Vetsera, the prince is Prince Rudolf, they were not engaged, but lovers.
      Do you think they wouldn't do an autopsy to analyze the causes of death? Mary and Rudolf died.
      Rudolf's daughter, the Archduchess Elisabeth Marie of Austria, she killed a lover of her husband, who she forced him to marry. And Elisabeth Marie got away with it.

    The Crown Prince was supposed to represent the Archduke Ferdinand (who's real life wife by the way was named Sophie).
    In part, this can also be seen as an alternative history story where the Crown Prince (Archduke) died from suicide vs. being assassinated in 1914 and leading to WWI.

    On a historical side note: Maple said "who knew it was so easy to stalk people in the 1800s" well, yes. But especially so here. You see the Austro-Hungarian Empire was the first in Europe to create and maintain what we might call a "secret police force" they were known as the Eyes of the Emperor. Part of their job was law enforcement and keeping tabs on both domestic and foreign people of influence within the Empires borders and officially they were just an information gathering service. . . . .that said, as you see here. They were not above strong arming for the royal family, and even engaging in political assassinations. I always found this time period in the Austro-Hungarian Empire fascinating. Most people didn't even know they existed, and if you did. You were either within the inner circle. . . . .or in very big trouble

    In regards to the question “ was it a prerequisite to have a mustache to be a cop in those days”
    Where do you think the term “the fuzz” comes from, in reference to the police. It’s the hair on the upper lip!
    Edit: I am not a linguist or an etymologist. This is intended strictly for humor.
