- This week on the Completionist let's take a look at my Shantae review! A cult classic that started on the Game Boy Color. With only a single printing run of cartridges as one of the last games on the Game Boy Color, Shantae is one of the hardest and rarest cartridges to find. Borrowing from the Metroid formula and building upon familiar platformer experiences it was easy to pick up for a new IP. But what separated it from all other games was it's art-style and character design. Shantae stands out and it's no wonder how she continues to be beloved in present day.

Shantae has what I call the Powerpuff Effect. A weird juxtaposition of girly flair and entertaining action that appeals to a larger audience than expected. The waifu fuel helps too.

I'm honestly surprised that he didn't talk about the Middle-Eastern cultural style within Shantae's world, which really has like an Arabian Nights vibe to it, similar to Aladdin. In fact, Shantae's outfit actually looks extremely similar to Princess Jasmine's red outfit she wore near the end of Aladdin, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the inspiration for Shantae's design!... Well that and the classic show "I Dream Of Jeannie" of course.
You are right, Matt and Erin Bozon were actually taught animation by the makers of Aladdin. He sometimes talks about it in retrospective interviews.
@@Gh0zt421 Interesting, guess the animators of Aladdin helped play a role in Shantae, albeit unintentionally.
Guys in goomba did two episodes about chante on the show talking about this period from his deduction, shante's world had more of a turkish/ottoman inspiration. Check it out they're really good!
Fun fact, debug mode is accessible by inputting a series of directions on the start screen, and unlocks EVERYTHING including the tinkerbat transformation (heart holders sold separately)

I got the honor of playing this game and I loved it, I mean, I played risky's revenge and the pirate curse before, but I still had a lot of fun seeing how it was when it started. Shantae is the character I want to see the most represented in Smash Bros Ultimate

It's really, really good, but I also loved Half-Genie Hero, and the two take the series in different directions so it's near impossible for me to choose. Can't I just have both?
She's already there... as a spirit thing, i don't know i don't play it but she's technically there.
@@magnas27 Apparently anything goes with the upcoming second DLC pack, including characters previously represented by a spirit or what have you.
Though as far as Shantae goes, I'm not certain she'd be considered as Smash is for good boys and girls.

Shantae is one of my favorite game series. And the music is amazing. BUT that thumnail is now perminate burned into my memories.
I'm so happy to see this gem getting some love. I've been obsessed with this franchise for ages but never meet anyone else who has ever played one
Now let's hope Shantae is one of the next 6 DLC characters in Smash!

She’s the perfect character for Smash: diversified moveset, including transformations and hair whips, a bevvy of awesome soundtracks, lots of good locations for stages particularly Scuttle Town, lots of costume design ideas, she’s an indie character who started off as a Nintendo character and last but not least: it will certainly boost her popularity to new heights. The only thing I imagine stopping her from being in Smash would be her sex appeal, they already turned their nose at Mai Shiranui, but she had big, cleavaged boobs and exposed legs; Shantae has her boobs covered and wears baggy pants. The only thing exposed on her is her arms and belly. So yeah, I’m really drawing up a blank as to why she wouldn’t be allowed in Smash.

Seven Sirens even gives her a more Smash-compatible moveset, tho the original GBC game does have some good ones too that haven't made it into the later games

Little did I know how much I've love this game the first time I played it. I was the second person to have a review of this game on YT too. Now all these year later I have one of the largest Shantae collections in the world. It's so awesome the series is getting so much attention now. I cannot wait for Seven Sirens! Fair review! Jelly of that CIB copy, I had to trade a few of my most valuable games to get my loose copy.
I wish WayForward had kept the over the shoulder view in towns in the sequels.
Honestly, I hope they at least reference it in the future. I legitimately like it as a concept and not just as a hardware compromise. There's just something endearing about seeing the towns that way.

I remember playing this game as a kid years and years ago. Looking at it now, I can say it just might be the best looking GBC game.
I want them to bring back her combat accessories and most importantly the dancing minigame. C'mon! Jake Kaufman with a Shantae rhythm game is a match made in heaven!
Yay! I was wondering when you'd get to Shantae. That being said, I'm sure this will match the opinion I see most for the first Shantae game. That it's a fine enough entry point but hasn't aged very well, which is the same opinion I have. Personally, I feel the later games have aged far more gracefully, and await your videos on those next. Really, they worried about Shantae being too sexy for the Game Boy Color?... Well I never saw it that way. Don't get me wrong Shantae is quite a sight, but her design isn't too over the top, and I didn't find it distracting at all. If anything we could argue that she's more cute than sexy (or perhaps a perfect balance of the two?)... I always thought they weren't trying to make her just another sex symbol full of fanservice, but rather trying to make her look like a traditional Arabian belly dancer, and when it comes to cultural accuracy, I'd say they nailed it! After watching a couple videos by Gaijin Goombah, it opened my eyes to even more than I already knew about Shantae!
I would say a good balance between beauty and cuteness, at least up to Risky's Revenge. Everything after has a higher cuteness rating, in my opinion. As far as the dancing and whatnot goes, I find it tasteful and tame, especially compared to other mediums...or how real people like to dance sometimes.
The unfortunate irony behind the healing dance is that it drains 10 gems per healed heart. That makes 100 gems for a full heal. You know how expensive a full heal potion is? 100 gems. And you can carry 99 of those, more than you‘d ever need, and use them at the press of a button rather than needing to dance for it.
The dances can be good when you are away from the shopping, furthermore the healing dance requires less minimum gems to do the work, so you can have minimum resources and still heal, and sometimes you don't need to heal a whole lot of life, thus sparing heal potions for more important moments that requires you to heal fast!
Shantae has turn 20 years just yesterday. Happy 20th Anniversary, Shantae.
It's really cool how TRIGGER animated the cutscenes in the newest shantae, it just looks so cool!

you can actually access the Tinkerbat transformation on Shantae's non-advanced mode. To do that, press Left (×2), Right (×8), Left (×6), Right (×2), Left (×7), Right (×6), Left (×8) on the title screen once the game has booted up. This combination is not random, rather it is one off from WayForward's phone number of (661) 286-2769. Once that menu appears, you can choose to start a Debug Game (Which will take over a normal file slot), at which then you get access to the features that Debug Mode provides.
once you created a debug file, press down, up, up, and the Tinkerbat transformation is all yours!!
It's nice to see a fresh take on Shantae as a stand-alone game experience. Personally, this is the only Game Boy Color game I could ever stand playing.
Jumping back and forth between the nearest neighbor and smoothed captured in this video is maddening :D
I played through Pirates Curse and Risky's Revenge 1st, and while they are better games it wasn't painful back tracking to play the original. There were some moments where I cringed but I got quickly over that, such as the warp squids, felt easy to get lost because you don't have a map and the game is surprisingly big, and no check system made back tracking a pain but not as bad as I've had with other games of that time, or frankly games of today (which is saying something since games of today should have these problems fixed up). Game was still fun, and while not as enjoyable as the later titles still fun and just as easy to play in today's day and age, it was fun seeing the origin and how they've progressed as a franchise and company throughout the years. Now all we need is SHANTAE FOR SMASH ULTIMATE, COME ON PAPA SAKURAI LET'S GO! Minecraft Steve please, Shovel Knight is the Indie darling over the past few years, but these 2 don't have the history that Shantae does, the perfect indie rep for Smash.

I love this game. Top five in my indie series faves. I hope you do the rest before Shantae 5 releases. Side note, I went back to your old channel and I don't know why, however your old character designs look like they were straight outta Steven Universe.

I love Shantae! Awesome I was able to DL it to my NEW 2DS XL and experience this amazing game. Great episode.
I, for one, didn't mind the slower, methodical transformation method. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it happened in real time, meaning enemies could hit you out of the animation. That, and the moments where you only need to transform for about 3 seconds and then you transform back.
I didn't mind the slower pace. I find it visually and conceptually interesting that she dances to use her magic.
I would like a second attempt at the fighter gears, with an upgrade system like the magic jams in R.R., handled like the dark magic in Pirate Queen's Quest. I'm a defender of the gears, except the one where you have to stand in place for a while to use it. The one that is also mapped to the attack/run button. The one that has made me fall into more pits than I can count. That one. The others are fine in my opinion, since they deal more damage than the hair whip in this game. The tiara, like the harpy claw swipe (the REAL harpy talon), is an instant kill to regular enemies.
Too bad flash bolts were so op. They were my main method of attack. :P

Are you gonna do Completionist reviews of the other Shantae games? Especially Half Genie Hero, as it feels like more of a Completionist's game, as there's so much more to do and complete than all of the other games!
Does Half Genie Hero deserve a "Complete It" rating? Well I guess it depends on if Jirard thinks completing it is rewarding enough. I think the main rewards for completing every different mode are different win screen trophies, most of which show Shantae in different outfits. Some gamers find them rewarding enough, but for a hardcore Completionist like Jirard, I can't say for sure. If you ask me, if earning all of the win screens aren't rewarding enough for him, then I'd say the game deserves a Completionist rating of "Complinish It" (a mix between Complete and Finish It), as in Complete the main game (as it unlocks the good ending), but maybe don't complete all of the other game modes and DLC's that come with it. They're basically all of the exact same levels over and over again, but with some different game mechanics and dialogue to change it up a bit. I'd say completing the main game is enough, but that's just me.

Shatae games remind me of Wario Land games for some reason.
probably the art style, & the quirkiness of the cast... also both of them feature very attractive Pirate ladies
They share a couple of similarities.
Both are games that use transformation.
Both are metroidvanias.
Both have pirates or pirate themes.
Both take on a comedic approach.
Which is exactly why there's a sizable amount of people that wanna see a crossover between the two someday; myself included

you really took your time to review this game, specially for teasing this game very subtly several times, this is easily one of the best looking game in the GBC, i might got lost at times for not having a map also spend sometime locating the zombie caravan but overall this game was a blast! is worthy to complete it

I took me several years to find my copy. I ended up finding my Shantae GBC at Anime North in Toronto for $800 wacky canuck dollars.
That was a year ago and I've not seen another since.

the original Shantae remains the only entry in the series I haven't been able to beat ( not including Seven Sirens as it's not on consoles as of my typing this )...the game is infinitely harder than any of the sequels, at least it is for me.
...man I hope Shantae is one of the 6 characters in Smash Ultimate's 2nd fighter pass....

It's always interesting to see where a series started. I've played one on the 3DS & half genie hero on Switch. Had a great time with both and the new game should be fun to play when it comes out

Please do more Shantae when you have the time. Its probably one of my fav games ever. Pirates Curse is amazing, 1/2 Genie hero was good but felt a little empty. And I cant say how hype I am that Seven Sirens is a month away.

Still remember how I got the first Shantae game when I young. ^^ Me and my siblings got a new game before we moved to a new house. She got Shantae while I got Wario land. She didn't like how the game was played so she wanted to trade so I traded with her and from that moment I loved the game. I'm still sad I had to give up my copy when we got the GBA and my folks game all old Game Boy Color and game relatives as a hand-me-down thing.^^;
I was actually unaware of just how old the Shantae series is, it's kinda surreal seeing her in the older pixel style. Cause I'm so used to seeing her portrayed in the neater/newer game style. ^^: Overall though, great video for a hidden gem of a game. Hopefully Jirard and the team don't have as hard a time, trying to track down any other older games for the show, like The Neverhood. Also suggestion for Completionist DLC: A Hat in Time, specifically playing the DLC in Co-op.

Hi Completionist! I wasn’t sure if you’ve played this game yet but a suggestion I have is “Hyper Light Drifter”. It’s a top down game that reminds me of all the Zelda games that you enjoy playing so I figured you might like to look into it. Keep up the awesome work!
Love this game and the series literally just saw your unboxing as well. Shantae is the perfect example of a hidden gem gone popular another example i would say would be the earthbound series. Personally though my favorite hidden gem of all time is Klonoa, Door to Phantomile and i would love to see a review on that someday. Especially since in my opinion it is the exact opposite meaning it is a hidden gem that never quite got the recognition it deserved. Still find myself playing my copy of it quite often to this day.
