Heck, compare her art to the opening movie. It would be like if Toon Link became the official look for all Zelda games going forward.

Kurt Adams The story is generic 8-bit. it's not bad, but it's not why you'll play the game either. The game play is fun though, but I wouldn't call it too challenging. it's worth the 15 bucks it's asking for imho.

Shovel Knight is a beautiful combination of games like Zelda 2, DuckTales, Megaman, an over world inspired by Mario 3, and other games.
It can be challenging, but the levels have checkpoints(that you can destroy), so you can adjust the difficulty.
The gameplay is fun, the music is great and it's just a great game overall.
I got my copy for 15$ Not sure why it's so expensive where you are.
As a side note, the DLC for this game is free and they're still making DLC for it.
I like the look of the world of Shantae. Wayforward knows how to put forward some great female protagonists.
And then if they are damsels in distress, there's a legitimate story reason or just a flat-out joke about it, this game being extremely self-aware XD
The Shantae series make me think of the Neptunia series.
Those other cheaper games don't have a sexy belly dancer. I loved this game.
Not to mention the Risky Beats edition coming WITH the soundtrack, making it entirely worth it.

Conclusion: Good game, not great, but will get better (for a fee), and wasn't a disaster like Mighty No. 9

Half Genie Hero... a must buy. The replay value for it is freaking high. Now the worst part... waiting for the Risky Boots DLC.

All of the Shantae games have been a joy for me to play (yes, even the first one). I trust WayFoward, and I believe they will continue to deliver great experiences with this series.
HOWEVER, I'm going to say this now. Whatever they decide to do with Shantae, they need to seek CONSISTENCY! ( starting with picking and art style and sticking with it. I like them all, but I don't need a new one every time a new game comes out. ._. ) While I prefer the Metroidvania aspects, the platforming emphasis in this game was fine...except for the fact Shantae's abilities kinda make platforming a non issue.
Whatever they do, stay consistent. Don't do a Sonic the Hedgehog, WayFoward. Last thing we need is a billion different subsections of Shantae fans who can't agree on what's right for the series.

I don't really get the broken base of sonic, 3d games just try to capture different aspects of the classics and focus on them. I've been a fan since the genesis starting with sonic 2 but really the fan base kinda sucks sometimes

yea i really hate that about sonic, they change the formula for no good reason the worst offender's of this are sonic heroes and sonic lw, like seriously after sa2 witch let's be honest didn't really ad a whole lot to the sonic adventure formula the best course of action would have been to give it the team mechanic to give the adventure fans a mix of something new AND consistent like a good sequel should but nope let's drop a perfectly good and stable formula that could have used some updates and instead create an entirely new formula that alienate's our current fans and will cause the new fans to demand more of something our original fans don't like thus hurting sales.
and then they do this shit again with sonic lost world they completely ditch the boost formula when it could have made the parkour system faster and more fun to use but instead they gave us the spindash witch is clumsier and more broken than the boost and they give us a RUN BUTTON IN A SONIC GAME a series that always relied on momentum physics even in game's that gave you speed from the get go. sega we're not asking you to be like mario or cod and be unoriginal
we're asking to be like........literally any good game franchise as in keep what worked, remove what didn't work, improve the formula, give it something new so fans aren't buying a 2.0 version of the same game,

I have to say this:
Mighty Number 9 is the real reason that Half-Genie Hero couldn't reach the full potential it should have reached. The Kickstarters ran at the exact same time, and MN9 got over 4x the funding. And since MN9 didn't even try to live up to its promises, I fully blame Keiji Inafune and Comcept for HGH being somewhat disappointing, because you can tell that Wayforward cared a whole lot about this game! It honestly pisses me off even more than the massive stab in the gut to all of the backers and supporters that MN9 was. This isn't just bitter ranting, if you look at the facts, this game didn't get the funding it deserves because literally everybody had impossibly high hopes that Mighty No 9 would be the better game so that is the one that got the funding. (Look where that got us all, two games that didn't reach their potential. Hindsight is a real bitch! Also I wasn't employed at the times of either Kickstarter, so I wasn't able to back either game.)

I don't feel like Johnny really hammered home enough the animation and art quality of this game. Everything in this game is just a joy. The animation quality is just absolutely beautiful, god this was fantastic.

Gotta say, the most sad thing about Half-Genie Hero, in my opinion, is no fully animated cutscenes or full voice-acting. I would love to hear more of Cristina Vee. Certainly can't get that with BlazBlue: CentralFiction (fuck you, Aksys).
SaiyanGamer95 It was a stretch goal, but it wasn't met. Which was super unfortunate cause I really wanted voice acting and cutscenes.

They did say in the BSC run that they made the goal through paypal for Sky, Bolo, and Rotty at the last second.

Whilst I prefer the character designs in Pirates Curse (non-pixelled versions, of course) along with having maps for the levels and the larger mount of content, I freaking adored this game from start to finish. I'm frustrated at myself that I didn't back this game during the kickstarter campaign, would have loved to get the soundtrack and physical version.
I hope Wayforward continues this series, the amount of charm and style in the Shantae series is amazing and deserves all the love and attention it gets.

I think he maybe got lucky with some of the boss patterns. There a cycles in this game that are straight up impossible if you're not psychic. Late game you can just cheese it but at the start of the game when you have 2 health it's very annoying.

The original Shantae had the most content, and is still my favorite. It does only very little handholding, has a good difficulty curve, and one of my favorite secrets ever! The hidden warp dances. Something that the later games couldn't do anymore even if they wanted to because apparently it's too much to ask to execute the transformation dances. I liked that part.

I say you should do a "Round 2! Johnny VS" series where you look at the games with all the extra stuff, plus maybe relook at some of the games your old SGB Reviews covered to show off how your writing chops have improved and how your opinions on the game have changed.

I pretty much agree with your thoughts on Half-Genie Hero (good, but not at its full potential yet). And yeah the lack of dungeons is pretty disappointing, along with the more interactive dances IMO (I do agree the first game's were a little clunky, although I feel like they could go back to them if they made it more like playing the Ocarina from OoT/MM, just with dance moves instead of musical notes and NO metronome). It's also kind of sad how the transformations pretty much had two exclusive uses outside of the big ones like Monkey, Mermaid, and Bat (I do disagree with your thoughts on the Crab and Mermaid however; I think they did a decent job of giving both of them slight benefits and avoided having the Mermaid be a straight-out upgrade).
I think my biggest gripe is Holly; I guess I'd become convinced that they'd be giving her a bigger role than what she got. It would've been cool to give Shantae an honest-to-goodness rival that also has genie powers, maybe even make her a new staple character in the series ( I don't think HGH really HAD any new characters outside of the Giga-Mermaid, Holly, and that wizard guy). I can appreciate what they made as a fan of the series, but there's not really any new blood or foes for the next game(s) when we've got the three (four) barons, Risky, and I suppose Nega-Shantae yet again...
I still loved the game, probably my favorite in the Shantae series. I took some time to explore a lot of areas once I got certain transformations, and each of the mini arcs in the game makes me want a Shantae TV series.

The release of “Ultimate Edition” in 2018 renders this review pretty outdated.
Half-Genie Hero pulled a Sonic 3 & Knuckles And didn’t even bother with DLC and just said “Fuck it, just release everything at once.”

I never played a single game until a few days ago. Being a new player , I can honestly say this is the most shocking fun game I've played in awhile. What started as a game I got for my girlfriend turned out to be more for me. I actually found this game to have some difficulty to it. Not cause of the enemy's but the environments. Not being very big into games like this, everything was new to me. The hints and the text from people gave solid info on where to find everything. Overall I have become a fan of this series and will recommend it to anyone. Hopefully the next one has a lot more story
Is it bad that this review actually helped me feel better about NOT buying the game? To clarify, after Pirate's Curse as my first game in the series, I was super pumped for 1/2 Genie Hero. I followed the Kickstarter and even though I was disappointed it wasn't coming to 3DS, I was ready to grab it on my PS3 with open arms....until they cancelled development for last-gen consoles. I was so disappointed that I was missing out on what would surely be the best Shantae game, so hearing it only turned out to be pretty good helps in hindsight. Great review, John!

the shantae franchise is mediocre, it's ok if you feel that, better buy a better game, and not one this style over substance game.

This is probably one of if not THE most gorgeous game I've ever seen in my life.
The only thing I like better about pirates curse is the final boss, the pirate tools and difficult platforming. Half Genie hero just massacres pirates curse when it comes to animations, music, combat and better inventory system.
I liked the "Then and Now" concept, so I would welcome those videos again.

In Sonic Next Gen's defense, it had the decency to wipe itself from canon after everything. Mighty No. 9 is a lousy starting point for a new series.

Just few days ago I played, and completed Shantae Riskey's Revenge for the very first time. Had a blast. Couldn't put it down. So I'm relatively new to the series. Had an interest for a long time. Currently playing Shantae Pirate's Curse, and already feeling like it's going to be above Riskey's Revenge!

I can't think of any other handheld Sonic games that were released after the Tails games and before the Advance games with the exception of Pocket Adventure.
Hamlock I say he probably doesn't have much to say about the Drift games considering how simple they are.

UP FOR LESS THAN 5 MINUTES, OVER 1000 VIEWS.
The only reason the game feels short is because Shantae defeat the villains fast, giving the game a somewhat an episodic feel. The time I had playing with this game is around the same, I've completed all Shantae's games having around 11 hours of gameplay each game this one is no different. With the future addition of playable Risky Boot, it's safe to say this game will take the longest to complete.

All promised modes like risky or the other costumes or bolo/sky/rottytops are all free to anyone with the game, backers get any dlc that releases in the future that's paid for free, sort of a thank you to helping make it come to life.

I quite like the 16-bit graphics style from the Genesis titles, but if we're talking higher definition, then graphics like the ones from the fanmade Sonic 2 HD (which was actually made by some of the same people who are now developing Sonic Mania) would be the best way to go, in my opinion.
Still, Sonic Mania has some incredible visuals and smooth animations for a Genesis-esque game.
