Thanks to Violin, she explains one from many cultures in Indonesia. Indonesia has so many cultures, ethnicities, even It has more than 700 languages, and more than seventeen thousand Islands, so I think what she mentions is representative from Java Island. CMIIW 😇

I took some classes at university about Indonesia and one thing that stuck to me was that you have to belong to one of the 5 main religions (besides the native believe about nature spirits) and that people are even judged differently according to their religion. So e.g. a Muslim could be judged by Sharia law whereas a Christian wouldn't. First off: is that true? And second: does that also apply to foreigners, so would e.g. a Muslim tourist that commited a crime be judged differently than a Christian tourist for the same crime based on their religions?

    • @Dandelion-nt5ov
      @Dandelion-nt5ov 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

@@hmvollbanane1259 There are many types of laws in Indonesia. If someone commits a crime (e.g., murder, theft, etc.), they will be judged using criminal law regardless of the suspect's religion. Aceh is the only province that officially practices Sharia law because Aceh is a special autonomous province, and Islam in Indonesia spreads from there. Religious laws are implemented for matters such as marriage, inheritance, etc., so each religion has its own rules for them. Additionally, mocking other religions is prohibited due to the blasphemy law. For the second question I think its same, i am not sure. I am not a law student major, so this is based on my current knowledge. CMIIW

2:03 What is she talking about - there is practically no public trash bins or boxes to throw away trash in Japan at all. You're expected to bring your trash with you home and throw it away (recycle) there. So you're in most cases reliant on the convenience stores or some vending machines (for pet bottles and cans ) if you want to throw away trash.

But, lol, no one will see me because everyone around me is just like that, each person have their personalities express through their clothes!

During Christmas, my grandparents gifted her a lot of things, and when she went back home, she didn’t take any of it saying it didn’t fit her suitcase or would be very expensive to ship to Japan, which was understandable. I know for me, I was in my senior year, working, and in a sport, so I didn’t get to interact with her as much as I hoped, and found out when trying to stay in touch after she left, she actually held it against me for not trying harder to converse when she was in the US. Honestly it was a great experience, but very saddening when you consider cultural differences and how you can unintentionally offend someone. Definitely a learned experience.

3:45 i have my own theory why people on the countryside and third world countries tend to litter a lot.
When plastic was still not invented, the littering culture was basically a norm, and still not become a massive problem since its mostly organic materials. But then plastic suddenly became a common material used for most things after the ww2 but people still have lack of education about littering (especially people from newly-independent countries), so suddenly it becomes a major problem because unlike organic materials, plastics will never be decomposed by nature. The solution is to either educating the masses about not littering while adding more trash cans on every corner of the street, or simply making biodegradable plastics more common... but the latter will gives us another problem, microplastics.

In Vietnam I would say wearing croptops and shorts is still completely fine. I think the Vietnamese girl is just emphasizing people in the countryside are not as open-minded as people in some big cities, so they tend to judge people the way they dress. One thing about taking pictures and posting on the Internet; it happens when people consider your clothes are too reaveling. Revealing here means you are on the street and wear a pairs of shorts with the length just a little longer or around your butt, tops that show half of your breast, or dresses showing half of your back. In some worse cases, wearing bikinis at the beach is considered awkward, some not-very-polite men will judge, laugh, catcall, and take pictures. But don't be afraid to come to Vietnam. You can dress whatever you want honestly. Croptops, off shoulder tops, skirts, thigh-length shorts, body dresses are totally fine.

In Vietnam, it's okay for foreigners to wear more revealing clothes, we know it's super hot, but especially you shouldn't do that in temples, pagodas,... I think people still judge you with short clothes anyways, so no need to care, wear what you want or what you feel comfortable:). In younger generations, we tend to be fine with that, we wear tank tops, shorts, skirts & leggings on streets more usually (but many local men (in older generations) are often shirtless), but I rarely see women go out without bra (yet it's not illegal to not wearing bra).

To say that Westerns and Easterns are similar is a big contradictory. Do not generalize what Eastern and Western look like or feel like. It is quite outdated.

well, in Indonesia, pointing your index finger to someone is not polite (with your RIGHT HAND FINGER),
but... it would be 1000 more worst if you pointing your LEFT HAND INDEX FINGER. it multiplied x100 times worst. 🤣
edit : to foreigners, people would ignore it if you do it, some might remind you to not do that, if you are indonesian, well, you are asking for a fight, physically.

    1. Of course you’re not supposed to litter everywhere, but the Japanese are known to follow this strictly even when they’re abroad. Unfortunately Indonesia is actually one of the world’s largest waste contributors 😂 Our people still have a long way to go when it comes to environmental issues.
    2. Like what Violin said, there are many different ethnic groups in Indonesia, each with its own rules. Where I’m from it’s OK to point with index finger, and I also use my left hand a lot, which some Indonesians find impolite. I do try to be mindful when I’m in an unfamiliar setting.
    3. Asking girls “how much” is just deplorable anywhere in the world. Only the worst of men would do this.
    4. I understand not drinking from bottle as well, as it is the same in Indonesia. To be more specific, it doesn’t apply to drinking water from your own flask, which is OK. It’s more like drinking from soda bottles, when you’re supposed to pour it into a glass first.
    5. Dressing modestly when visiting houses of worship is just common sense everywhere in the world. Vietnamese are not even that conservative among Asians, it’s all about the place and occasion. For example, even in the more conservative parts of Indonesia you will see people wearing shorts at the beach and that’s acceptable.
But yeah, those skirts worn by Japanese schoolgirls are just unbelievably short by any standards!😂
