Historically when a jedi plays the double agent to defeat the evil guy from the inside out it never works. It didn't work for Ulic Qel Droma, Quinlan Voss and it didn't work for Luke either. That’s why Luke is the greatest Jedi of all time. I bet even if leia hadn’t stepped in the worst like would’ve gotten to is like Dooku episode 2 level (not actually a sith all things considered) then he would’ve cured himself.
What’s interesting about this is that it’s exactly what Palpatine tried to explain to Anakin when he made his initial dark side sales pitch. “Anakin....In order to understand the great mystery, one must embrace all its aspects, not just the narrow, dogmatic view of the Jedi. In order to become a complete and wise leader, one must embrace a ~larger~ view of the force.” Even though I wasn’t a fan of the clone Palpatine concept, I do really like the lesson Luke learned and his enlightened perspective at the end. It’s such a tragedy that this enlightened Luke was tossed out and replaced with a humiliated coward who knew nothing and almost killed his own nephew.
The ultimate Irony here is that, while this was what Palpatine tried to use to lure Anakin to the Dark Side, he didn't really believe it. Palpatine never saw any real value in the Light Side of the Force beyond what it could do to benefit him and his schemes. As such he delved deeper and deeper into the Dark Side until it consumed him, whether he realized it or not. Luke proved that his lie was actually the truth. The Force is not good or evil, the Force is the Force. It was Leia's love that brought him back to the light just as Vader's love for his family did. Certainly Vader had a few other reasons as well too.
Dark Empire might not be the greatest Star Wars story ever told, but I love it exactly for this, for what lessons it provides to Luke. That the Dark Side was not to be feared but to be accepted, that love for family and friends could redeem instead of doom - that, to me, is what makes Luke the first of the new Jedi, the very basis of the New Jedi Order.

When tempted by the dark, do not act; ask where the fear or anger is coming from within yourself, and adress it first. The dark side will always exist. But the fear and anger with you can be dealt within you, not by burying it. Accept that some things are beyond your control.
I liked how Luke understood you can’t have one without the other and that the Jedi and Sith were so blind to it, they couldn’t see past what they believed was the right side of the force.
The dark side is in all of us. It is a beast that must be tamed, not ignored, becoming a part of who we are. Mastered and incorporated, not disregarded.
The problem with the expanded universe is that not all the stories are good. Yes, there's a lot of cool lore but many times hidden in a heap of crap. Sometimes I read Wookieepedia and compare with the source material, and realize the best stuff is written by fans for fans.
That's why Kyle Katarn was chosen as the Vice Jedi GrandMaster and the BattleMaster by Luke. Kyle Katarn accepted both Light&Dark Side of the Force when he emerged from the Valley of the Jedi.
Luke: Anyone can come back from the dark side Also Luke: *tries to kill his nephew because he felt a little bit of darkness in him* I know this isn’t cannon, but dang the last Jedi was bad😂
This type of greater understanding of the Force is what I wanted Sequel Trilogy Luke to demonstrate in the films. After 30 years seeing him grasp a larger understanding of the Force in an attempt to create a New Jedi Order that would strive to maintain the balance his father had died to create.
A good rpg game. Although I do FFG's system now, I actually like the Saga edition Force users that expanded on other traditions besides Sith/Jedi. There was one (I forget the name) that actually allowed for abilities such as Force Lightning as a non Dark-side power, for use by anyone. Like the Je'daii of old, the force is not just black and white. It is simply the 'Whill' of how one uses it.
Fear and pretending the dark side wasn't there was ultimately the real failure of the modern Jedi. The dark side technically isn't inherently evil just as the light side technically isn't inherently good. It just happens to make doing evil things easier.
For Ulic Qel-Droma, then. I actually know the broad strokes of of all of this. 99.9 percent of my Star wars books, and comic books, don't have the "legends" label above them. (Yeah. I'm that old) But, it's still nice to hear someone who loves Star wars as much as I do (maybe more) explain plot points, and maybe other subtitles that I missed.
I wish that a spin off would include a recording from Luke referring this, not even needing the palpatine clone part, just Luke discovering these secrets to the dark side.
I feel that this was the best end for the Jedi, and not their extinguishment. It easy to get angry at either Sith or Jedi, but in the end even if they both vanished, they would always come back in one name or another, in one form or another. Because regardless of Light or Dark, the Force exists in all things, and will do so forever.
They say the darkside is tempting. I always figured it to be something that made you feel powerful. Yet it is usually described as something that sucks you in. However, as a person you don’t have to do bad things to achieve a goal. So I’m going to take something from wheel of time. When a channeller channels saidar or saidin it’s described almost as if it were a drug. It made you feel more alive. And the dark one’s true power he’d allow some of the channellers to touch was even more addictive like heroin. Though I’ve never seen the darkside described in such a way it almost seems like they may be trying to convey it in such a way. Once you start on the darkside it’s hard to stop. Could you not just be a Jedi and throw some force lightning to short circuit a security panel to free some prisoners? Or do you have to be angry and you have to want to hurt somebody to even come close to throwing a bolt of lightning?
Even though Empire was my favorite movie, A Jeidi's Fury was my favorite scene of the whole saga, I used to rewind and rewatch it back in the VHS days.
The Jedi Masters used the Darkside but because of how easy it is to lose who you are the Jedi Masters chose to only let trained minds use the Darkside. And the thing is Luke Skywalker lost himself Leia had to bring him back which it is very hard to bring others back to the light.
I wouldn't have a problem with this philosophy, if it weren't for one fact: every single dark side user immediately turns into a mass murderer on the order of billions. Call me crazy, but that sounds like a massive drawback to me.
HCBailly that's not actually true. When you research Darth Vectivus, the night sisters of Dathomir, Darth Marr (to an extent as he was a warrior and fought and killed on the battlefield), etc you realize there are many that weren't compelled to be mass murderers . Really the dark side is dangerous when someone is prone to mania, has even a slight amount of problems with impulse control, and isn't completely clear on what they want the power for (that uncertainty can leave people constantly angry at never feeling truly fulfilled and addicted to having even the smallest and most short-sighted win). Basically the dark side isn't completely evil, most just don't have the temperament and mindset to deal with it without losing themselves
That's my favorite part of star wars too... I think, if you're about the same age as I am (I'll be 42 in May, ironically and "luckily" enough, on May 4th, Star Wars Day; that's my birthday! Lol), that scene seems to be the favorite of most of us. Most people I know in my age range love that Vader vs Luke lightsaber duel....I think it's because we were old enough to see it in the theater and really know/understand what was going on, and create a great memory. I DO remember seeing Empire in the theaters, at only 3 years old, but for some reason I only remember BOSK lol...I think maybe I thought he was cool looking, and kinda scary, as I was into that shit my whole life (monsters, horror movies, dinosaurs, etc)...but my 1st REAL memory and great movie theater ex was Return of the Jedi, and especially that final light saber battle.... so amazing, so emotional, great music, and our hero Luke wins... but poor Vader, poor Vader; I remember thinking THAT as well Haha... Hope all is indeed WELL with you too, Non-Canon Expert!
As a 90's kid growing up in the prequel era, I'm with ya. I love the real 6 movies but my dad made sure I watched the OT first lol and tried to be in the room when Vader told Luke he was his dad to see my reaction at 4 yo.
@@East_Coast_Toasty_Boy haha that's awesome... yeah I wish I could find people who have NO IDEA, somehow,,that Vader is Luke's father, so I can make them watch these movies and get their reaction (preferably record their reaction too haha!)
If u understand the darkside isn't a mindful choice like "I choose the darkside". Its more so a emotional state that can overtake ANYONE that will lead u towards dark deeds m actions...im not sure one chooses the darkside rather you let the darkside overtake you according to your emotional state ie. Anger, fear, the feeling of powerlessness ect....this is why anyone can turn to the darkside. Even the most purest best intentioned..its because its not a choice rather an emotional state the leaves u ripe for the darksides taking.. people can make choices be it good or bad or in between..its alot harder to choose your emotions, impossible even..therefore the darkside will always be there waiting for the wrong (or right) jedi to slip up..
I've been trying to get into these comics, but honestly have no idea where to start. I read some of the old Marvel ones as a boy, and from what I remember they pretty much emulated the movies. Any suggestions as to where I should start?
If you want this Story, read the Dark Empire comic Trilogy by Tom Veitch. It has a sorta sequel Trilogy called Crimson Empire, about one of Palpatines Red Guards. Then there's the series "Legacy" (which plays 130 years after the movies) by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema about the drug addict Bounty Hunter Cade Skywalker. That also has a sequel series called "Legacy Volume 2" by Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardmann about the Scavenger Ania Solo.
Interesting it seems who ever you are there is a dark unknown path. You can choose to go a path you know the outcome and sometimes there is a path that has different results. Choosing the dark side in a situation where its kill or be killed may be the only way, my enemies enemy. there is clarity within goodness and evil but switching paths is always the darkest, maybe thats the essence of becoming a sith clouding all judgment. thank you for this video.
So like new the emperor was still very much alive. Yea ok and apparently latest movie they fought a corpse of Palpatine? This is where you see the writers just don’t care. Two very contradicting plot points regarding Palpatine.

Hey guys, Emperor Palpatine here, to understand why one side cannot be defeated, you must think outside the box and realize that you need enemies in order to give you purpose in life. When I was once a Jedi they rejected me and didn't make me a jedi master so I went on a vendetta to end the jedi order but the Skywalker family (yes I am a skywalker as well) will always be spared.
So in the last Jedi the entire thing with Kylo was him questioning and being fearful of the future was Luke going against what he came to know? It was Leia's love that brought him back to the light just as Vader's love for his family did. Certainly Vader had a few other reasons as well too.
Dark Empire might not be the greatest Star Wars story ever told, but I love it exactly for this, for what lessons it provides to Luke. That the Dark Side was not to be feared but to be accepted, that love for family and friends could redeem instead of doom - that, to me, is what makes Luke the first of the new Jedi, the very basis of the New Jedi Order.
3:42 LUKES OWN TENANTS, OF WHAT THE DARKSIDE CONSISTS OF;
Could hear the choir in my head during Luke's overpowering of Vader at the start. Fantastic scene.
I love that moment so much!
Dont know why this channel only have 300k subs the quality put into these videos are incredible I wouldnt be surprised it Star wars Theory doesnt collab woth you . Jerp up the good work bro and God bless
When tempted by the dark, do not act; ask where the fear or anger is coming from within yourself, and adress it first. The dark side will always exist. But the fear and anger with you can be dealt within you, not by burying it. Accept that some things are beyond your control.
the character of luke skywalker ;ITTERALLY saved me from being evil...
if not for me..... for THANKS MASTER LUKE!
I liked how Luke understood you can’t have one without the other and that the Jedi and Sith were so blind to it, they couldn’t see past what they believed was the right side of the force.
"Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi.." -Luke, RoS 😉
that is true.
*Jake, RoS
3:01 I remember seeing that comic in my elementary school library
The dark side is in all of us. It is a beast that must be tamed, not ignored, becoming a part of who we are. Mastered and incorporated, not disregarded.
God the Expanded Universe is sooo much better
The problem with the expanded universe is that not all the stories are good. Yes, there's a lot of cool lore but many times hidden in a heap of crap. Sometimes I read Wookieepedia and compare with the source material, and realize the best stuff is written by fans for fans.
Texas Vet so good , Lucas never ready any of them and said that this isn’t how he pictures things rolling out 😂
@@elmerkado EU has its flaws this is true but it's a hell of allot better than disney canon.
You can't get much worse than the new Canon stuff. Well the movies anyway the comics are actually pretty good
Nah, lots of shit.
What I love about this part of the expanded universe is it’s like a life lesson in a sense and I feel like people can relate to it.
That's why Kyle Katarn was chosen as the Vice Jedi GrandMaster and the BattleMaster by Luke. Kyle Katarn accepted both Light&Dark Side of the Force when he emerged from the Valley of the Jedi.
Keep up the great content, SWRC!
Luke: Anyone can come back from the dark side
Also Luke: *tries to kill his nephew because he felt a little bit of darkness in him*
I know this isn’t cannon, but dang the last Jedi was bad😂
Disney destroys everything
Chernobyl Affect06 that wasn’t Luke Skywalker it was Jake Soywalker.
I consider the new trilogy non canon.
Darth Mickey and Darth Kathleen was aiding Luke's actions to kill his nephew
Just the movies. The tv series are 👌 with me.
This type of greater understanding of the Force is what I wanted Sequel Trilogy Luke to demonstrate in the films. After 30 years seeing him grasp a larger understanding of the Force in an attempt to create a New Jedi Order that would strive to maintain the balance his father had died to create.
Me too, I feel like the new Trilogy is a missed opportunity
And thus, the Jedi Academy was made.
unlike most people i actually liked dark empire
Jordon Stewart tbh Disney should have gone this route.
Please check out " Crimson Empire."

Liked and enjoyed watching another GREAT vid.
Keep at it and stay AWESOME.
Legends sure was fascinating!
The Dark Empire saga is some of my favorite Legends content, so any analysis videos are awesome :).
Excellent Video 👍
I swear you must have played the West End Games RPG.
So did I. In fact the Westcoast game is the reason I've gotten heavily into the expanded universe.
Let's all just agree that Luke Skywalker from Legends is one of the greatest Jedi to ever live.
One often meets their destiny on the path they take to avoid it...
Love your vids man keep it up.
Thank you for watching, it is awesome to hear that you are enjoying them!
@@starwarsreadingclub No Thank you dude for providing interesting content with more character than ive seen from any other star wars lore channel.
Fear and pretending the dark side wasn't there was ultimately the real failure of the modern Jedi. The dark side technically isn't inherently evil just as the light side technically isn't inherently good. It just happens to make doing evil things easier.
Luke knew one cannot defeat evil if one does not know what evil is.
When Luke used the dark side of the force only to realize how powerful it is
'Careful you must be when you look upon the Dark Side. For the Dark Side looks back'
*Hello Darkness my old friend. I've come to talk with you again* (fitting music)
Join me and I will complete your training.
I've never heard of that girl...
Mace windu understood and reflected on the dark side. That is why he was able to stand up to palpatine.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THE JEDI MASTER MENTIONED IN 5:22 !!!!! CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT PROPERLY!!!!
If not for me: "wish Star wars Legends was back in Canon."
Where was this Luke in the sequels?
This guy makes one point and then just repeats himself over and over saying the same thing but in different ways.
And I still love it for some reason
Yup
Ah the art of linguistics truely the enemy
You might be confusing him with the “Stupendous Wave” Chanel.

Great video
I really want someone to cover that comic always heard about it but have yet to see it or the book that Luke learns force storm
No good without evil. No light without dark. You can't have one without the other.
Even though Empire was my favorite movie, A Jeidi's Fury was my favorite scene of the whole saga, I used to rewind and rewatch it back in the VHS days.
Would love some legend video about Jania and anakin solo
Which novel(s) is this from? Would love to read it for myself.
The Dark Empire Trilogy (Comics only) by Tom Veitch (it's "Dark Empire 1", "Dark Empire 2" and the very short "Empire's End")
@@qualityautismNoah Thanks mate !
So... Luke became the first true space buddhist with force abilities and a lightsaber.
I left a like for *Ulic Qel-Droma*
The Jedi Masters used the Darkside but because of how easy it is to lose who you are the Jedi Masters chose to only let trained minds use the Darkside.
And the thing is Luke Skywalker lost himself Leia had to bring him back which it is very hard to bring others back to the light.
Can palpatine go to the light side, do you even imagine it?
I love this background music
The force has always been pure within u 🙏🏾
Why couldn’t we get this version of Luke Skywalker for the sequel trilogy? Would’ve been so interesting.
I think thats what mace windu believed too. Luke figured out how to use it in teaching jedi.
It all just goes to show: there is no good or evil in the Force itself; only how the practitioner wields it
Yeah when you think you can easily rule the dark side you have a Kyp Durron incident
Force priestess: "to deny it only gives it powers."
I wish the Clone Darth Sidious was canon, seducing Jacen Solo to become Darth Caedus
Luke as a jedi shadow.. Awesome
"Think about giving the video a like! If not for MEeeEe..."
Lmao.
Now this is the beginning to the path to balance...
Basically the whole "fear leads to" mantra. THAT'S why the Old Republic era matters.
Fear leads to anger anger leads to hate hate leads to suffering
Interesting it seems who ever you are there is a dark unknown path. You can choose to go a path you know the outcome and sometimes there is a path that has different results. Choosing the dark side in a situation where its kill or be killed may be the only way, my enemies enemy. there is clarity within goodness and evil but switching paths is always the darkest, maybe thats the essence of becoming a sith clouding all judgment. thank you for this video.
This is also portrayed in the comic Dark Jedi.
This Palpatine was fresh off the printer.
So like new the emperor was still very much alive. Yea ok and apparently latest movie they fought a corpse of Palpatine? This is where you see the writers just don’t care. Two very contradicting plot points regarding Palpatine.
I would like to see who would win luke or Anakin even though Anakin was the chosen one it wouldn't be so clear cut because he was between world's
It depends which version of Luke are you using?
Damar Glover ep 3 luke seems to be the closest to Anakin I say this because he was able to take down vader in a duel
@@deanblue5077 idk I would give it to anakin he's better trained bought different lightsaber duelist styles Luke's only had to fight Vader's so it would leave him at a disadvantage Luke also is still more inexperienced than using the force compared to Anakin as well
Damar Glover I see your point but beating vader is no small feet vader changed his whole style to kill Jedi and luke was trained by the greatest Jedi the order had yoda and obi wan for that matter but even though anakin's style was my favorite it would be to hard to say who would win I think luke might win though because his will would be greater
@@deanblue5077 I think alot of Luke beating Vader is due to 1. Luke building his lightsaber style to counter Vader's and 2. Vader wasn't fighting at a 100 percent due to him internally fighting with himself. I think Anakins more fast pace and acrobatic style might be too much of a change up for rotj Luke but I do believe whoever wins the other person definitely makes them have to work for the win
So, count dooku?
Hey guys, Emperor Palpatine here, to understand why one side cannot be defeated, you must think outside the box and realize that you need enemies in order to give you purpose in life. When I was once a Jedi they rejected me and didn't make me a jedi master so I went on a vendetta to end the jedi order but the Skywalker family (yes I am a skywalker as well) will always be spared.
how has anyone not said he sounds like Zoidberg
So in the last Jedi the entire thing with Kylo was him questioning and being fearful of the future was Luke going against what he came to know? It seems like that would have significantly changed what the movie depicts. I’ll admit tho that I haven’t really read much of the Star Wars books to know if this gets explained but that’s my 2 cents.
Wow it’s almost like... legends had a way more leveled and mature version/understanding of the force
This is the real like skywalker. Disney just writes bad fanfiction.
Which Legends novels is this in?
Dark Empire
Legends is canon
Spread the good word...
Didn’t know this
I've been trying to find the books that cover this sequence of events. Does anyone know off the top of their head what the titles are?
Dark empire
Yes.. start with the thing called Google.
@@mathieutyler00 Yes google is a hell of a tool but finding a book without the title of the book and only the barest knowledge of the plot is NOT Google's strong point.
@@AlexTheKiller1297 Thank you.
We are going to have to wait a good ten years or more to see legends realized on screen cause Disney want to try “their own thing”
What a waste of time...
