  • As the year comes to a close I thought we could take a look back on the garden this year and think about what we've learned. Spring is always my favourite season and I'm looking forward to seeing the crocuses and tulips flower again. Thanks so much for your support this year!

A water tip from Australia 🇦🇺, you can save the rinsing water from the washing machine for the garden.
It might not be best to put on young seedlings or vegetables (although you can), but for established plants it's absolutely fine. This is how we survive summer here.
Your garden is absolutely lovely btw!
I also struggled to get any seeds going this year. I would look into things like snail/slug access, does soaking the seed for a day or 2 help germination, do they need light or dark to germinate, was the soil to wet or dry, was the weather warm enough, etc.
Honestly I'm not sure the soil medium is all that important or would have much of an effect on germination.
The ones I did manage to sprout, a lot of them were sprouted in-between layers of paper towel or sitting on cotton wool.
The more I garden the more it becomes a mystery haha good luck! 🌱

5:20 Springtime last year, I potted my 5 year old Souvenir de la Malmaison rose into a massive pot. Not until it was covered with powdery mildew for the first time ever, all summer did I realize that coconut fiber in the potting mix caused it. NEVER again shall i use coconut fiber. Here in the States , so far as I know, there is only one brand name of potting mix named Fertilome that has no coconut fiber in it. Shortly before I up potted my Souvenir do la Malmaison, I up potted my fig bushes into massive tubs, i used Fertilome for them, no mildew or fungus at all. Figs reliably mildew and get fungus with yellow leaves falling off mid summer, this did not happen this past summer, despite spraying less than ever with fungicide. Coconut fiber, never again, I go to great inconvenience to avoid it, it is in ALL of the mixes except Fertilome.
    Thank you for sharing,
    Ralph in Ohio.
p.s. Souvenir DID survive, recovery began early autumn, it is in the cold room all winter, now loaded with leaves, one tiny flower bud, raring to go. Malmaison is a VERY special rose to me, it's history as well.

Mulch with as many layers of newspaper you can up to 6. Cover with leaves and grass clippings, you will have few weeds and easily pulled. Of course only mulch BETWEEN PLANTS,only draw back plants cannot self seed. Mulch will need replacing each year or so. Must wet down newspaper, after you finish.
