And even whole gangs specifically stealing cars to swap the vin from a crashed car onto a good stolen one.. So yeah some people beeing garbage is the reason behind it...

No one is talking about changing VINs here. Johnny explained that. And that doesn't explain sub assemblies being tied to one specific vehicle. They're trying to force you to buy only new parts from the manufacturer. plus the manufacturer charges a lot of money for access to their mainframe, to pair the new part to the specific vehicle. Right To Repair advocates say this is all contrary to the Magnuson-Moss warranty act. All Johnny's $3,300 black box does is re-flash the part so the vehicle thinks it's new.@@michihoffi69

Paint and interior were near perfect. Shame on BMW.

He said he could easily make over $100k a year doing it. The problem was most of the day was spent driving to the customers. I considered doing it too but glad I didn’t now that I know their reputation. The company I work for now has computer controlled equipment but we actually teach the customer how to work on it. We don’t hold any secrets. After all, they bought the equipment and they can do whatever they want with it. If they bypass safety protocols, warranty is void.

it's 2012 BMW, all warrantees have expired a long time ago. it's probably worth not much, being a 8 year old BMW. owner probably wants to spend as little as possible to get it back on the road.

Basically the anti theft system (which was called EWS for a long time) is uniquely matched to the DME. So it looks like the injector 'driver' module on the DME board is fried, however if it is still talking to scan tools, then getting a rom dump is possible. Hacking BMW DME's is a pretty common practice to get anti theft deletes and modding stock engines. From a service point of view, if a DME fails in the cars lifetime, which shouldnt happen then BMW should replace it at cost, at least allow one replacement per VIN vehicle.
he is using autohex to do the job not hextag. With regards to integration level (software version) you can also do this on autohex and choose individual module to program unlike with ISTA, then code module and you're done. Also those MSD ecus are very common to fail in that way are are quite easily fixed.

In video he was only able to change ISN on bench then prog/code in car. If he wanted once he had ISN of donar ecu he could have just written to the cas and be done though of course car would have different ISN than from factory.

VIN coded modules have been commonplace for 20 years. My 99 Discovery used VIN coded modules which, at the time, were only serviceable by the dealer. Tools like this are long awaited.
To be fair I would say pretty much avoid any BMW with the N63B44 and its variants like this X5 has. The rest of BMWs they still have their own common issues but not as bad as this engine, trust me.

people in general in europe maintains their vehicle much better then an american, also garages in europe are higher quality becouse they dont work only on american v8s but a wide variety of different makes models and engines from 4 cilinders to v12's
I loathe them DME.. You ever tried to program one. As it talks to the Key. The Key takes to the EWS.. And they get out of sync from dead battery sometimes..As the code rolls over...
Normally these problems are caused by failed a MOSFET (a transistor) on the ECU board. Here in EU for these we have professional companies capable to open the ECU replace the 1$ transistor (if its failure didn't cook the rest of the ECU) and you're back in business. Replacing a whole ECU for just one basic component is a terrible waste of money... You can check for the failure with an oscilloscope, if you have some electronic skills.

Basically, it's the same thing a dealer would do, using a salvage DME instead of a new DME. Saved his customer some money in the process. Really cool!

Thumb nail is correct . So in the video you are cloning the broken dme to a working one so the key works.
Want to see a video of him working on a VW Touraeg V10 or Audi Q7 V12 SUV, or maybe a Saab 9-3 Viggen.

Moral of the story is to avoid any BMW with a V8 engine.
Or buy them with the repairs, in mind. For example buy a cheap e92 m3 with a blown engine for cheap, buy new enging, have fun for 80000km ;)
