  • Coturnix quail are very easy to raise and don't require a lot. But there are a few things to consider when you are planning you quail coop.

    I've gone all sand before and it gets messy and muddy. Even with the sterilite, shoe box size feeders, that I totally copied from Chris, they get dust in everything. Keep your dust bath separate and cleaning will be much less a headache. Infact keep water and feed as far away from the dust as possible...lol 😆

    something ive learned is to always have extras of everything. your right about the extra cages i keep a large clear tote around and a medium sized one just in case and i have like 2-3 extra waterers and feeders, it has saved my behind several times.

    I built a similar hutch (like nearly exactly hahaha) but instead of the live wire to keep the foxes away i added another board around the bottom all the way round, and put a thicker gauge wire mesh that works perfectly. A lot cheaper too and because its "analogue" there's no failures, but yeah gives a good clearance away from the birds feet so they cant get to them and with the large gauge it lets the waste fall through easier when falling through 2 levels so you don't get much extra cleaning needed

    • @rhysforestlord
      @rhysforestlord 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      pretty sure ya know what i mean but for any who dont. floor wire is on the bottom of cage then 4+ inch gap because of new board then the wire.
      adds extra strength too not that its necessary but hey over engineer and ya never have problems hahaha

    Greetings Chris, I have been using empty plastic coffee cans for both feeders and waterers. I have been experimenting with cutting the lid and using large mouthed juice or Gater Aid bottle as a water or feed hopper. Haven't got all the bugs out of that second part yet.

    My feeder recommendation is a 24 hole chick feeder, the long type with a pyramid shape flip top lid. About $7 on Amazon right now. I then cut 1 inch by 1/4 inch hardware cloth to fit in the bottom. I lay that on top of the food. It prevents them from being able to dog it out with their beaks, which they still did when I made a Slightly Rednecked feeder. His feeder eorks awesome for babies though!

      NO RECOMMEND !!! I want to tell everyone about my negative experience of working with this farm. Zack took an advance payment and I waited about 2 months for a package of eggs. As a result, 3 disabled chicks hatched from 80 eggs and died after 3 days. The rest of the eggs I opened were unfertilized. I have been quailing for 10 years and I know what I am talking about, I wanted to start a new Jumbo breed. I sent photos and videos to Zack. As a result of a week of correspondence with them, I did not even receive the promised 50% refund. Business advertising is very beautiful and loud, but in fact, the result is zero. Wasted time, money, and nerves, that's the result.

    Hi a couple things that looks like 1/2” wire. Also a large container like your feed bins with a quail plus size opening on the top or side could be used as a dust bath. I tried the casserole size baking pans and within a few hours most of the sand is gone. This might work in smaller cage environments like a stacker cage. I get a kick out them bathing so I want to let have the ability to get dirty when they want.

    I can't use feeders because an ant invasion starts immediately. that's the problem with feeding my parrots, chickens, quails and lovebirds - here in Thailand. So I have to put a bowl of water under each feed container. all animals live in a giant aviary and the smaller ones inside the big one, in a smaller aviary

    • @Slightlyrednecked

    • @Silver_Creek_Aquatics
      @Silver_Creek_Aquatics 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If its for quail. The coturnix i have don't fly that high. I'll let them roam around a few acres, but they stay in a very close area, fly made 3-8ft high and as far as 75 ft when they really want to spread their wings. On avg, they won't fly that far around a yard, just getting exercise. But really, most of them aren't even interested in roaming around. They like to feel safe, like being in a cave. The safer they feel, they happier they will be and will lay more. Anyway, reason I'm saying this is in response to not breaking the bank. If you've got one that really wants out. Let in out around your house where predators can't get em. I had a flight pen for them, but they just didn't really get into it...well, not enough of them. Out of 100, maybe 4 or 5 wanted to really fly around. So you could just save all the money. Animals wanna feel wild sometimes, but these little uns just wanna feel safe and secure more than anything. I don't know if this was helpful at all, but wanted to share with ya. Take care, be safe.

    i'm a bit irritated that the quails run on bars. the animals need a decent soil like sand, earth, coconut shavings, hay, grass

      You must have missed the big portion of sand that they can run on.
