I built my quail condo 2ftx8ft stacked three levels built with 2x2, vinyl covered 1/2inch hdwre cloth, slide out 3inch deep pull out poop trays under each pen, J-style feeders and auto water cups. Each level is divided into two 2ftx4ft pens - total six pens. The top level two pens are my breeder/layers with roll-out egg trays and the bottom two levels - two pens each - are grow out pens. I produce mainly for meat. My set up is a little beefier because it's out in a covered run that is very secure but I do protect against snake and rats/mice with vinyl covered 1/2inch hardware cloth. I fashioned a hinged lid over the protruding 5inch portion of the rollout egg trays for the top two breeder/layer pens that I can secure with a latch. Nothing can penetrate my quail condo. I cover the back with plywood and also have temporary plywood covers I put on the sides when temps fall below freezing so that only the front of the cage is exposed. I also have built 1ftWx2ftD shelter in the breeder/layer pens running front to back with a plywood door on the front. The quail have a side opening to/from the pen. The shelter floor is solid plywood and in the winter I lay in pine flake bedding. The quail can snuggle/warm from the cold winter temps. In spring/summer/fall I place a sand bath container in there. The birds like the privacy - they even lay their eggs in the sand. This set up can house 20 breeder layers producing both hatch/eating eggs on top layer with the second/third layers (4 pens - 20 birds each) for a total capacity of 100 birds. I like being able to incubate 30-40 eggs at a time and have the pen space for the hatched chicks at 3wks. I leg band to help keep track of strain (source) and age. Similar to you I breed/raise Jumbo Pharaoh and Jumbo White Recessive quail.
You definitely need to show of this design. When you making a video? Or do you have them on Instagram? Was thinking if Chris's design would be stacked how would it be. And you have done it.
Thank you for this info! We just hatched and I wasn’t sure when to put them in with the adults, and was wondering if one square foot is accurate. Glad I saw this!
Chris i started a turkey cage & saw one of your quail video & you got me hooked on them so i modified it to your style. I had the frame done already so i had to work around it to make it like yours & it worked. Waterer & feeder the same as yours just minor upgrades. But i did all inspired by you sir. I feed my quails 30 percent protein & they stay slim & gain no fat why is that.
Hi Chris. Thanks for the quail videos. Am trying to make hatch modelled after your own. Are you gonna go similar vids for Guineas? Also what are your thoughts on stacked cages? Was wondering why you went with this design and if one can do your design but stacked. Saw a homestead youtuber with stacked cages, mention having 1 male to 5 females per cage avoids fights.
What I was wondering is how high to make a hutch? I was considering an aviary type, but do you have to worry about the quail breaking there necks if it's not high enough. I was thinking about 5 to 6 feet high, but is that a bad idea.
How large (or small) can the opening between the enclosed area and the open area be? Also if the whole top and bottom and sides are closed in that area will 1 opening between that and the open side be enough ventilation or should I include 2 openings for ventilation?
Why do you mix your breeders and growouts? I would think that if you kept them separately it would be easier to keep your fertility high. That way when the babies start laying you dont mix the fertile and infertile eggs. Dont the chicks lay infertile for a week or more?
So I have a hutch that I am building and it is 8ft long 3ft wise and 4ft tall should be ok right?? I have only 10 quail so far and 3 males that I can tell so far.. any input is greatly appreciated
I do have a video on when i built it. I didn't really have any written out plans when I did it but the video shows how it was put together and it isn't too difficult. th-cam.com/video/1-FjnYMV1-c/w-d-xo.html
My first ever batch of quail eggs will be here in about 20 min or so but my incubator wont be here till Monday. I ordered the incubator way before the eggs.the incubator is supposed to be here on the 25th and it will be, but the eggs were not supposed to be here until the 28th and today is the 20th. I hope it works out, I'm a bit worried the eggs will lose their fertility if I wait 4-5 days, so I'm going to try and make an incubator. I think after watching all of your quail videos 3-4 times each video I'll be good. lol. wish me luck.

Wow that sounds great ! Can you show some pictures ? Maybe I will copy some ideas...

Thanks Chris. The 8x3 off your design, i built this spring is great( BUT, HEAVY, had to reposition it,lol. good thing I've got 2 strong grandsons).
I hear you @Gary_B I am female and no grandsons nearby.
Yeah, sounds right to me . Love quail always a good watch stay safe my friend and God bless. 🥰👍

Curious what’s the reasoning for the extra open space between the pens and the roof?
Probably for air flow in the summer heat while still providing protection from rain
We have our first batch of eggs in the incubator now. This was really helpful, thank you!
How did it go?
It never would’ve occurred to me to have the doors drop down. Thanks for that heads up.
Lol , I feel ya the math struggle is real sometimes.

What about an extra screened area on the other side and expanding the sandbox for the extra capacity? Total 12 ft instead of 8.
We are getting ready to hatch our first on Saturday

I built my hutch similar to yours.
This channel and rockos modern survival are some of my favorite thank you for doing them
Can you list the materials used to build the quail hutch. What sizes of wood, mesh etc.
Do these quail fly or can they fly just wondering?
So I have a hutch that I am building and it is 8ft long 3ft wise and 4ft tall should be ok right?? I have only 10 quail so far and 3 males that I can tell so far.. any input is greatly appreciated
Can I put my quails on the ground? I want to make them a natural enclosure.
Thank you Chris! :)
Do you have a video on how you built your hutch ? Or did you buy plans ?
I do have a video on when i built it. I didn't really have any written out plans when I did it but the video shows how it was put together and it isn't too difficult. th-cam.com/video/1-FjnYMV1-c/w-d-xo.html
Do you ever have any issues with predators.
Perfect video thank you needed a refresher

How did it go???
Could you make a video on how old a rabbit can be to breed and why it should be that old.
Quails poop vs rabbits poop which smell stronger
Quail stinks worse then Rabbits.
When you replace your breeders, do you worry about the possibility of incest?
Can you use 1 x 1/2 inch wire on your quail cage floor? Or does it have to be 1/2 x 1/2?
It needs to be 1/2 by 1/2 my friend. Otherwise their feet will fall through..
@@rhoadsmatheson2246 Ok thanks, wasent sure!
