    Antlions are the larval stage of lacewing like insects in the family Myrmeleontidae. They make their living as sit-and-wait predators, catching and eating ants. This video shows their transformation from sit-and-wait predator to winged adult insect.

    I remember feeding them as a kid in the summer. I was the weird kid that watched the dirt. They are an impressive species to watch.

      I did the same. Dug them out once or twice to see the "creature" and looked them up in some books my parents had, as it was prior to public internet and cell phones, back in "the dark" ages, lol.

    As a kid I remember seeing ants crawling around antlion nest ... watching ants fall in the pits and the hidden antlion pulls the ants in the sand pit! Awesome!

    I collected a few and put them into a sand filled tank. I remember when they disappeared into sandy balls and then there were dead "drangonflies" in the tank and no antlions to be found.. I hypothesized it was a form of metamorphosis. Such surreal little creatures...
    i feel lucky to grow up a 90s kid!

      @@AntLab Would you be able to point me in the right direction regarding bull ants nest removal? I live in South Australia my neighbour has a nest in the middle of her front yard. She has tried to drown them bleach them and so on. I've talked her down for now but we never see these ants much here and its a shame if they die just because people don't understand them.

    Well you answered my question as to how such a stubby little ant lion can metamorphose into such a large-ish insect with huge wings. I recently caught one of the adults fluttering around on the sandy soil in my lawn, it kept sticking its back side into the sand, presumable depositing eggs. You weren't lying about them being clumsy flyers, they almost seem barely able to fly. the one I found was all over the place. I was surprised that they actually enlarge their body when they emerge.

    It is a new piece of information for me that in English there are 2 words: dragonflies and damselflies. As far as I understand they distinguish anisoptera and zygoptera. In Russian they both are called by the same common name стрекоза in everyday language, though specialists distinguish them, laypeople do not.

      No. Antlions belong to the lacewing order and their closest relatives are the owlflies. Dragonflies and damselflies belong to their own superorder that is fairly removed from most other living insect groups.

    soon they will leave Earth and go to Xen, evolve, then come back after some incident in the New Mexico desert, then portal storms, some alien empire comes along and takes over in 7 hours, then the ocean is lowered severely, and beyond cities, its called the outlands and there are antlions that are evolved.

    As kids we used to take grass seed shoots and get our spit on the end and try to catch the ant lions and pull them out of the sand. We also did the same thing with little holes we found in trees. We’d get these skinny grub looking things with giant pinchers
